If you want to play UHD BDs, this is the first and, as of May 2016, only player available. It makes a lot of noise from its fan and just spinning the disc. With the latest available firmware, I've had it hang during movie playback. Its Netflix app lets you stream UHD movies with audio better than DD, something that apps built-in to smart TVs + ARC to your receiver cannot do (HDMI ARC limitation). The Amazon app keyboard does not include a backquote ` key, so good luck logging in if that is in your password. The Vudu app can't properly enter less than, greater than, or ampersand characters, so good luck logging in if any of those are in your password. Going to Samsung's webpage to email support and report these issues, they don't even let you select the UBD-K8500 as a model number, so good luck getting anything useful from Samsung. With 2 HDMI outputs, one for video with HDMI 2.0 + HDCP 2.2 and another for audio, you can still use your old AVR with your new UHD TV and this player. Sometimes when trying to play a UHD BD, you'll get either a black screen or no video signal, but usually it works. Horrible design for a remote. This definitely feels like a rushed product that hasn't been thoroughly tested and debugged.
Nest Learning Thermostat — 2nd Generation: Meet the Nest Learning Thermostat. It learns from you and your home, programs itself automatically, and helps save energy when you're away. Things were working OK until they forced the most recent update onto my thermostats. Now they are going offline at random times, but it is not a Wi-Fi related issue. What is the point of having a Wi-Fi and internet connected thermostat if it is going to be offline and uncontrollable? None. I've tried explaining the problem in extreme technical detail to Nest support, but honestly, I'd rather go to the dentist than deal with Nest support. They can't imagine that their product has bugs even though the release notes for every software update from them is "Bug fixes", but omits the more critical "New bugs added". My router shows that the thermostats are connected, DHCP lease time shows that their Wi-Fi connection was not interrupted, but something broke the connection to Nest's server and port 54.81.121.60:9543, and therefore it cannot be controlled remotely. 6 months later, I deeply regret my purchase and wish I had gone with something else. Nest does not provide you the ability to roll back to a previous software version that worked.
Dropcam Pro DCAM-002-THD Wireless High-Definition Video Monitoring Camera: Keep an eye on your home or office and stream live HD video to your iPhone, Android smartphone or tablet. Night vision lets you see in the dark and the Dropcam app notifies you when the camera detects motion or sound.
This is a neat product and a great idea, but unfortunately, it does not work as advertised. Once the camera is in place, you can define activity zones, and it is supposed to alert you when there is motion in the activity zones. It also is supposed to detect when there is motion outside of an activity zone. That way, with the cloud video recording service, it highlights with different colors when there was activity inside an activity zone our outside the activity zones, and you can quickly review that footage. However, I've found that very frequently it does not detect any activity at all, none inside or outside the activity zones, when there is very obvious activity happening. I tried calling Dropcam support, and their suggestion was to try rebooting the cameras; I rebooted them, but that was futile at resolving the issue.
