Finally, ear buds I can give a 5 star rating to
on December 12, 2023

Holy Moly! I've been looking for a set of earbuds that has what it takes to overwhelm me. I've tried out tens of earbuds (on the order of 30 to 40 different ones) from every brand I can think of. None of the previous buds I've tried really did much for me especially in the “fit” department. Most have questionable sound “quality” and few can impress me with output power and volume level.
I can honestly say, with great enthusiasm that these ear buds have blown me away! These put all the ones I've tried previously, to shame. I guess the old adage of you get what you pay for really applies in this situation. And I understand that these are not cheap by any stretch of the imagination. But my experience with the Gemini II's has been complete joy right out of the box. And to be clear, for the price of these ear buds, I had very high expectations for them.
Physical Design
One look at the case and you'll realize that these guys set out to make something special. The case itself is beautiful. The silver banding with the Devialet logo is really elegant. The case sits upright on it's flat bottom and allows you to open the top to access the buds. It's amazing that so many ear buds I've used completely fail at this small detail. On the bottom side you'll find a USB-C charging port for the case itself and on the back side is a button to activate Bluetooth pairing. On the front of the case below the brand name is a small status LED that changes color and flashes to indicate a variety of modes.
The ear buds themselves are far and away the most comfortable buds I've ever used. With almost every other set of buds I've tried, you really need to play around with them to get them to fit right, and it's always a constant battle to find the sweet spot that delivers reasonable sound quality and comfort. Not the case with the Gemini II's. I used the default tips that were pre-installed, put them in my ears and barely twisted them a bit and they felt perfect. It was so easy to get a comfortable fit I was thrown off for a second. I've never, ever had this kind of fit experience with any other set of buds. Refreshing is the word that comes to mind when thinking about the fit design.
Sound Quality
I listen to a wide variety of music from hard rock to jazz to techno and even new age. These buds are a hard rockers' dream! They sound fantastic at any volume. When I turn them up all the way and they are loud! These guys have p l e n t y of power. All the other buds I've used all suffer from anemic power output, but these buds just shine the more you turn them up. I don't hear any distortion at all on even the most punchy bass heavy selections. The sound pressure levels are out the roof. Crazy deep, rich, clean bass. Mids and highs cut through the low end without sounding screechy or hissy. Everything just sounds clean! Devialet attributes the amazing sound to it's EAM, Ear Active Matching technology which uses an algorithm to dynamically tune the sound to the wearers ear shape. They are certainly doing something right to get the high quality sound they present.
To further enhance and tailor the sound, the Devialet app offers an equalizer that lets you pick a preset sound enhancement or set the EQ yourself. Personally, after trying the EQ section, I found that I got the best sound by using the standard “flat” selection. I can't say enough about the sound quality and power of these buds. Truly amazing sound.
App and Features
Aside from the comfy fit and amazing sound quality, the Gemini II's offer a lot of additional features. For starters, they have noise cancellation. This is a feature that's come a long way on buds in general across the board and I usually opt for the “transparency” mode so that I can hear things that I may need to, outside my own little world. But the cancellation on these buds works very well to filter out everything outside the 300-3000Hz range which allows voices to be heard and ambient noise to be filtered out.
Another nice feature is that the case has Qi wireless technology. So setting it on a wireless charger is all you need to do to charge it (or you can use the USB-C cable). Devialet says the charge will last up to 22 hours “with the charging case”. I haven't put this to the test, but I interpret this to mean that by recharging the buds in the case, you have about a days worth of use. The buds themselves are also water resistant with an IPX4 rating, so sweat or rain will not be an issue when using them during workouts. Devialet includes 4 sizes of soft rubber tips which will accommodate a wide range of different ear sizes. You can use them for phone calls as well because they employ a dual microphone design. They also have touch controls that work for music as well as phone calls. Combine all this with a 2-year parts and labor warranty and you can tell the company has a lot of faith in it's product. I never thought I would ever be able to find a set of ear buds that I would be completely happy with but Devialet has totally delivered a pair of buds that are simple to use, comfortable, and sound fantastic. Very glad I tried them. Really nicely done Devialet!

Great sound, great comfort
on November 9, 2023
Posted by: enem156
I really like these headphones. The sound quality is really fantastic. They have good battery life and are very comfortable to wear for long periods of time. I think they are better engineered than some of Sennheiser's previous models and it looks like they've really listened to customers about what they didn't like about previous headphones. They're easy to operate, easy to charge and are a great choice for at home headphones.
Build
These are nice looking headphones although there's really nothing that stands out on them. They are all black. The finish is matte and easy to grip and find buttons on. The all important ear cup design and materials are really nice. They use the same type of material that they used on the 450BTs but they have greatly improved the comfort all around on the Accentums. The ear cushions are molded and extremely soft. The inner foam is soft enough to seal well around your ears but not too soft where they crush easily. This is a huge plus over the 450s that used the same material but were made of several pieces that were stitched together. The headband is wider than past models and they seem to have nailed the tension on the Accentums. They stay in place without feeling like a vise on your head. The ear cups completely envelop your ears and don't sit on top of them, which by design helps to keep great sound in and external noise out.
Controls
Button setup is easy to get the hang of and they come with an easily removed label that has all the functions printed on it to get you started. There are four in all and located on the right ear cup. A round power/Bluetooth button is on the bottom and is set apart from the rest of them. Sliding your right thumb up the back you'll encounter the remaining three buttons. Volume down, a multi function button with an obvious raised bump on it and then the volume up button. The multi function button is easy to fine and serves as the play, pause, phone answer and phone disconnect functions. There's also a USB-C port for charging (and yes, they include the cable). One thing they don't do is fold for traveling. They also don't include a case or bag to keep them in. While some people may find this to be a negative, I didn't find this to be a big deal as I use headphones at home and ear buds when traveling.
Sound
I love the sound of these headphones. I use headphones with both mp3 files on my phone, and flac files on my home network drive, both sounded great. The music app I use on my phone has a really nice EQ built in that I tweaked a bit, and so when I listen this way I have the Sennheiser apps' EQ flat. When I connect to my network drive then I tweak the Sennheiser EQ. Either way, I'm able to get refined control over the sound. You can dial in the sound you want with the app and I found the sound to be very clean. The bass is deep and extremely punchy with good sound pressure levels that you actually feel. Midrange is clear and the highs are pristine and not hissy. When you have good sound quality like this you'll find you can (and want) to listen to music for hours, and your ears just don't get tired. That's the sign of good sound. If your ears seem like it's a chore to listen after a short while, get some good headphones (the same is true with any speaker system). I listen to a variety of music but I have to say hard rock is what dominates my collection. I also like a lot of techno tracks, and my tastes swing into jazz and new age as well. All of it sounded incredible. I was not able to try out the noise canceling abilities very much. My house is pretty quiet most times, but I will say, with most noise canceling systems I've used, you can hear an audible difference in the sound because these types of things doctor the way the music sounds in order to “cancel” out noise. I did not notice any difference in the actual sound I was hearing by switching to the different noise canceling settings. This is a huge plus. No one wants the sound to change to compensate for outside noise. I think unless you're on a noisy plane ride or next to a construction zone, you probably won't need it. The fit on the ear cups is really great, which helps a lot. But if you play your music at softer volume levels or listen to ebooks or something like that, you'll be happy to know you can turn on the noise canceling and relax. Actually, the canceling seems to be on all the time (active noise canceling), so you can only adjust having it fully on or using the “transparency” settings. Either way, it doesn't adversely affect the sound.
App
So I was able to connect straight up to Bluetooth on my phone without using the Sennheiser app, but I do already have it on my phone since I have several of their products already. Without using their app you can just use whatever music app you you like to use without any issues. But what their app gets you is a direct connection to the features you can't get to with any of the buttons. For instance, the noise canceling abilities and adjustments are only available through the app. There are really good EQ options as well like a five band graphic EQ. There's other EQ options that will let you fine tune the equalizer settings based on what you're listening to. This is called “Sound Check”, and while you play music you like, it guides you through a series of tone changes and lets you select the ones you like. After you're done, it shows you the EQ settings you selected by choosing the tones you liked. It actually works very well and I was surprised with the results. It does help you find the best sound settings for specific music you like to listen to. You can save as many of these tone settings as you like.
Wrap up
Most people would not consider these to be inexpensive headphones. And while they're probably not the top of the line, they sound great. They come with a host of features in the Sennheiser app including noise canceling and EQ options. And they are some of the most comfortable headphones I have. You can easily wear them for hours without your ears falling asleep and feeling crushed. I think they are better suited for at home use since they don't fold for portability (Sennheiser claims that they do, but the ear cups only rotate flat. The headband doesn't actually fold). They are also not water resistant so you may want to rethink buying them for workouts. For my use, I found them to be an excellent choice. It's also really nice to see a two year warranty on them. That tells me the company has a lot of confidence in the build and design.

Great features at a reasonable price
on November 7, 2023
Posted by: enem156
You can never have enough of these around. Power Distribution Units like these are used everywhere in most homes. I've had many over the years but few live up to expectations. You'll find the Insignia name on lots of different components, it's a Best Buy brand. I have bought their products in the past and been very happy with them.
This PDU has some really good features and I needed an additional one with the holidays coming up. For starters it has six outlets on it. They'll be good for basic AC plugs. The outlets don't rotate like some I've seen, but this is a good general purpose PDU. I like the black color and it has a 6 foot power cord with a low profile, right angle wall plug that's nice for using behind furniture, even if it's close to the wall. On the top side there's a power/reset switch as well as an LED indicator that let's you know the outlets are protected. This is not only a PDU, it's a surge protector that offers 1080 Joules of protection. It has 3-line protection which means your safe from L-N, L-G and N-G surges. It also comes with a $10,000 connected equipment guarantee. One of the best features about this outlet strip is that it is UL Certified. There are so many power strips available at other stores that are lacking in this certification. A UL recognized component should be everyone's first choice, certainly when buying something that has the potential of carrying up to 15A. I feel this is something a lot of people don't look for and take too lightly.
This power tap is rated for voltage protection at 600V. It is for use in 125VAC 60Hz systems at up to 15A. It is for indoor use only and for dry locations, so not for use on the outside holiday lights. An incredibly reasonably priced PDU for the protection it gives you. This will be great for indoor holiday lights and is sure to find it's way into a more permanent location after that.

Extremely comfortable and addictive sunglasses
on October 29, 2023
Posted by: enem156
I've been wanting to try these sunglasses out for some time. I'm so glad that Ray-Ban has decided to push their eyeware into this technology. They are respected worldwide for their unique and timeless styles and it was a natural step to go one step further and offer smart glasses. The Ray-Ban Meta sunglasses are currently available in two different styles, the classic Wayfarer and the Headliner. I chose the Headliner in black with green lenses because of the more rounded shape. I love the dark green lens color and these are polarized which is an added bonus. Each of these styles is available in different color options. If you wear prescription lenses, you can replace the standard lenses with prescription ones.
These sunglasses are very full featured and offer a lot in the way you can interact with them and use them on a daily basis. The glasses themselves have a very comfortable fit and are surprisingly very lightweight. I expected with all the technology crammed into them that they would be heavy, but that's not the case at all. They feel as light as their standard sunglasses do. They have three main features; camera, audio and Meta AI. This is my first pair of smart sunglasses so I wasn't really sure which options I would use the most. They all have benefits and I found that I used all of them pretty equally. I've always found Ray-Ban sunglasses to be some of the most comfortable glasses I've ever worn and these are certainly no different. They stay in place without having to constantly adjust them or push them up. They just fit great.
Camera and Video
The glasses come standard with an HD camera. It has 12MP resolution and can be used for photos and video. The photos I took are 3024x4032 and took up just under 2MB of space each. Videos are shot at 1440x1920 @ 30fps. The glasses themselves have 32GB of storage, so you have plenty of space onboard before you need to download your photos and videos. I chose the option to Auto-Import the media to my phone so that the photos I take will show up in my phone's Gallery. It does this when the glasses are powered on and the arms are folded, or when they're sitting the case. I found the video to be smooth and clear. It looked just as good as the photos I took. The photo quality is really nice. Very sharp with rich deep colors. To take a photo, just press once on the button on top of the right arm. To take video, press and hold a bit longer. Pressing again will stop the video, or it will keep recording as long of a video as you've set up in the options. You can live stream to your favorite social media if you're so inclined. I personally am not, and if you're as concerned as I am about my social media privacy, it seems that you can be as private as you want to be. You will of course need to give the app itself certain permissions in order for it to function optimally, but in most cases you can choose to not share any information with Meta. It's nice to know that the option is there to keep your privacy. I don't have any complaints about the camera but I will say, there are no camera “settings” to alter the way the photos and videos are taken. You can't take landscape orientation photos for example. This is a bit disappointing, and everything you shoot will be in portrait mode.
Audio
So the speakers are very directional and located on the under side of each arm pointing at your ears. For phone calls or notifications, they sound just fine and give you a natural stereo effect. Using the Meta voice assistant likewise sounds very good. You can use them to play music, but the audio experience in terms of sound quality is not great. Music sounds “ok” up to a certain volume level, but after that the sound gets increasingly tinny and irritating. Given the size of the tiny speakers, I'm in no way surprised, but I had higher expectations than what they are capable of delivering. I didn't expect audiophile quality in any way, but I at least thought I would be able to enjoy music at a reasonable volume level. I played music with different apps and various EQ settings, both mp3 and flac recordings and I could never get the audio to sound great. As an additional feature and if you enjoy Spotify (as I do), you can tap and hold on the right arm to play Spotify Tap. This is pretty cool if you just want to listen to something. This does however need you to have Spotify already running on your phone. It can be in the background, but it needs to be running and you need to be logged into your Spotify account, so it takes a bit of pre-planning. For me, I found that I used this feature more than I thought I would. You can double-tap the right arm to go to the next track, or slide your finger forward or back to adjust the volume level. The more I used the glasses for audio, I got used to their sound quality and just accepted it for what it was.
Meta AI
I've never used Meta AI but if you've used things like Google assistant or Siri, you're familiar with this type of AI. To use this feature you really need to enable the hands free voice command option so you can ask for information. Once that's done, all you need to do is say “hey Meta” and you'll hear a chime prompting you for your audio input. You can ask questions or even say “take a photo”. The voice commands are pretty cool and I did have very good luck with the AI understanding my voice thanks to the five mic locations in the glasses. You can choose the tone qualities of your assistants voice so that it sounds pleasing to you, and there are a bunch of different voice qualities to choose from. In the app settings you can choose whether your interactions with the AI are recorded, or if it shows you a transcript of your conversations, but from what I've seen, the transcript is very one sided, only showing me what I asked and not what the AI answered. This is obviously a Meta gripe and not a Ray-Ban one. It would be nice if the Meta app would let you connect the texting app of your choice but it only offers Facebook Messenger which I don't use. Definitely some room for improvement on the Meta side of things.
Miscellaneous
One of the nice things that's included with these glasses is the classic Ray-Ban case. If you've ever owned a pair of Ray-Bans, you will recognize it immediately. This particular case has been modified to include a charging system and battery. Ray-Ban says up to four hours of battery time on the glasses themselves and up to 36 hours of charge time on the case. I haven't actually timed it but it seems reasonable from my experience. All you need to do to charge your sunglasses is put them back in the case. The case has an indicator LED inside the “snap” closure that gives you an idea of where you stand with your charge. The glasses will also tell you when you put them on, how much charge percentage you have. You can charge the case itself with the USB-C port on the bottom (although you need to use your own charging cable because they don't give you one). I like a lot of the features these sunglasses come with, the touch gesture controls, voice control, comfortable fit, HD photo and video the Meta AI and the ability to receive and make calls on them. While the music playback feature was not as good as I'd hoped, I'm confident that they will work to improve this feature. Overall, I really enjoy using them. Everything I tried worked perfectly the first time without incident which says a lot about the design and implementation of all the features. These glasses will easily become something I depend on using. I used them for yard work and walks so far. Can't wait to use them on a hike. Really fun pair of full featured sunglasses with fit, style and comfort still at the top. Nice job Ray-Ban!

Great full featured smart plug
on October 22, 2023
Posted by: enem156
This is an awesome product. Up until now, I've used outdoor plugs similar to this but they only come with a remote that lets you turn them on or off. The Tapo TP-Link Smart Plug takes that to the next level by being WiFi controlled. That means I can turn the outlets on or off while I'm away from home.
This is a well designed smart outlet. One of my biggest complaints with remote outlets is the quasi-waterproof aspect of them. Most having questionable waterproof abilities. So to start with, this smart plug has an IP65 rating. Which means dust tight and protection from water jets from any direction. That's one of the biggest and most underrated qualities of this smart plug. You don't have to worry about dust or water getting inside if it's out in the weather. And as an additional bonus, the TP-Link is UL Listed, it meets the nationally recognized standards for sustainability and safety. You won't find either of these ratings on a huge majority of products available at a certain huge warehouse mail order company (you know who I mean). You also get a 2-year warranty with it, so that's another bonus.
So it's water resistant, it's dust resistant and it's electrically safe. The AC pigtail is about 10” long and features a right angle plug. The cord itself is beefy yet flexible and is solidly attached to the outlet housing. They even include a wall anchor, screw and cord holder to secure it. The outlet housing itself is made of plastic and seems very solid. There are power buttons to turn on each outlet manually along with small LED indicators that let you know when either of the outlets is turned on. The outlets themselves are downward facing and have rubber covers on them that help to protect against dust and water entering through an unused outlet. They're held in place only by one side of the rubber covers. I would have liked to have seen them put a bit more effort into these covers as they don't really stay in place very well. It would have been nice if they actually snapped into place so that they stayed seated better.
The electrical specs on the entire plug are good. 125VAC at 60Hz, 15A maximum load. They even state you can turn on up to a ½ HP motor. It also has 802.11 b/g/n wireless ability as well as Bluetooth. You can use Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, Samsung SmartThings or IFTTT to control the plugs as well as downloading and using the app itself. The app is very straight forward and easy to set up and use. It can also be used for other Tapo products like cameras, vacuums, etc.. This is the only product I have from them so when I open the app it shows me my two smart plugs. I can turn them on individually from the app or I can set timers for them or set a schedule for them to follow, or even select the Away mode that will turn the outlets on randomly while I'm away from home. There are also automation shortcuts in the app you can set up to turn on devices at dusk, turn off all your devices with a single button press, etc..
This will be a great help with Christmas lights, and I finally don't have to remember to turn them on (and more importantly) off anymore. I plan to get another one for the back of my house that will be great for turning on the fountains automatically in the summer and Christmas lights in the winder. Really nice and well designed product from Tapo!

Not just a smart scale, a body measurement system
on October 21, 2023
Posted by: enem156
I've wanted a smart scale for quite a while, but I've had an old one (different brand) for a long time that's not really a smart scale but it does offer a fat analysis number. The Withings Body Scan smart scale is just what I wanted and it offers so many added features and measurements that is hard to think of it as just a smart scale.
I'm familiar with other Withings products so I can say without reservation that this is a company that is dedicated to fitness and body measurements. Not only are their products well made and built to last, the companion apps are actually very informative and well written. The unit itself has a nice sleek, modern look to it. Through the dark glass top surface you can see the electrode stripes so you can position yourself correctly on the scale. There's a power button on the back edge along with a USB-C charging port. My scale arrived with 80% battery and Withings claims the charge is good for about a year. Even if it lasts several months, that's longer than I would have expected it to last and it's easily charged if and when I need to. The T-handle sits at the top edge and is easy to pull up for measurements. It's tethered to the scale and retracts itself when your finished. If you prefer, you can use the included wall mount to keep the handle at a convenient height so you don't have to bend down to pull it off the scale.
Setup was relatively easy and worked without any issues for myself. When my wife tried to add herself however, it got a bit tricky. She had her account set up but the scale would not feed the measurements into it. We tried multiple times with various connection methods and finally got her set up. We found it best to use the WiFi setup and not the Bluetooth method. I think one of the problems we were having was that she had set up the Bluetooth connection and then we tried the WiFi. It wasn't until after we removed the Bluetooth connection that her link to the scale worked correctly. In the process of figuring this out she sent a message to their customer support and they responded the next day with suggestions we could try, but by that time we had everything working. After we got the setup ironed out, everything has worked perfectly for both of us.
Measurements are as easy as stepping onto any scale, the difference is you need to stay on it for about 90 seconds until all the measurements are taken. The display turns on automatically when you step on the scale and hold the handle. It's bright, colorful and easy to read and shows you feedback and results as it goes through all the measurements. It begins with your weight and after that shows your name on the display. It comes up by default with my name (probably because I was the first one to set up my account), so when my wife uses it, she has to choose her account. To do this, you lean to one side or the other to cycle through the named accounts until yours is shown. This tells it to which account to sync the measurement.
The Vascular Age measurement tracks your average vascular age in relation to your actual age. Since this is an average measurement, it takes about five days of using the scale to report it's findings and after that, averages in your daily measurement to give you an average age range.
The ECG measurement is an interesting measurement to be able to take every time you use the scale. You can really track your heart rhythm every day and become aware of any adverse trends should they arise. This is another metric that will take several measurements before giving you any results. But once you get them, you can see the new results every day. It will also assess what it reads and interpret the results for you, which you can read in the app. It also measures your bpm at the time.
The Body Composition measurements are what I found to be the most interesting. This is a really cool way to see the actual composition of all your body areas, fat, muscle and bone. It tracks them separately with the app so you can see how you're doing over time and recognize any trends. If you want a more detailed breakdown, you can tap on the segmented body composition. Tapping on this graphic starts you off on the Fat Mass tab. This gives you a breakdown of your arms, torso and legs. Tapping on the arms or legs in the graphic will actually give you your measurements for each arm and each leg. You can then switch to the Muscle Mass tab and see the same type of measurements as they relate to your muscle mass. There are a lot of options on this tab and you can view all your measurement data to get a list of all your body composition data. You can even share a complete health report with your doctor. This is a much better way to show your doctor what your measurements are than the standard snapshot of your information at the doctors office.
The last measurement it will show you is the Electrodermal Activity. I had no idea why this was being measured and how this was in any way interesting, but you can find out more in the app by reading about what an electrodermal activity score is. Basically, it's a marker that can track how your emotions affect your body. This can show your stress levels over time and allow you to recognize stress patterns in your life.
The app itself is a really informative tool in itself. It stores all your measurements for you in a convenient place. It's intuitive and easy to read. If you have any questions about how the scale measures the different metrics, or even why they're important or what they tell you, there are “learn more” articles you can tap on to get all of these things explained. You can also sync data from other apps to your Whithings App. For instance, I have a Galaxy Watch that syncs to my Samsung Health app. I was able to sync Shealth to my Withings app and it now shows all my steps, active minutes, calories info and distance as well. You can get and use the basic app for free, but if you choose to get the subscription version, they offer a lot of added programs to help you loose weight or work out. I use the free app the way it is and I can't believe all the data I can look at and track. Also, if you use any other Withings devices like blood pressure monitors for instance, you can add these devices to the app as well so that all this information is stored in one place. Love the scale. Love the app. A must have device for anyone interested in their body measurements for weight loss reasons, muscle building reasons or just general health monitoring.

Ink tanks are a plus, but the printer is average
on October 3, 2023

HP used to be my go to printer brand but over the years the price of their ink cartridges started to soar out of control. They always made decent printers, but it just became way too expensive to maintain them. That's why I was intrigued by them finally realizing that the large ink tank printers are the way people want to print. I have a “tank” printer from another manufacturer that works so consistently and so easily that I've never had a problem with it in over two years.
Now, that being said, I was eager to try out the HP Smart Tank 5000. At first glance, it has a sleek and simple look. Clean edges, recessed illuminated buttons and a relatively small footprint. On the back you'll find a power cord input and a USB-B port (standard for connecting to a computer). There is no RJ45 jack to hard wire it to a network, you need to connect to your WiFi to have network connectivity. On the front, you have your ink tanks and a fold out paper catch for output pages. The top has the scanner bed and control panel, which includes a small display. The display is used to show you the status of the printer and any error codes that get generated. The illuminated buttons are brightly backlit and colorful. They include the power button, black copy, color copy, ID copy, WiFi, information, resume and cancel buttons. There's also an “attention” light and a scanner lid open light. The arrangement is nicely organized and intuitive.
Setting up the printer is somewhat of a process. I will say, this machine took a pretty long time to set up. After removing all the tape and cardboard, you need to add the ink, install the print heads and load the paper. All of that was easy and straight forward but what I'm not crazy about is that this printer needs way more interaction with HP than a printer should normally need. Just during the setup process alone I was asked on multiple occasions to give HP permission to collect data and usage information. They give you a link that is supposed to explain more about how HP uses the data they collect, but the link didn't open up anything at all. I don't mind installing an app that helps me use the printer and save documents I scan, but this seems to go way beyond that point. The setup process guided me to the Microsoft store to download the HP Smart app. It works as a central location to help you use your printer. Most of the basic print settings can still be found under Printers and Scanners (on Windows), which is where I'm used to looking at these settings, but now the HP Smart app shows them as well. If you load the app on your phone or tablet you can also print from those devices as well as your computers.
So, as far as the printers abilities are concerned, it prints at an average speed. For what I print, that's not a big problem, just an observation. The quality of the prints are clear and accurate. Printing photos in Max DPI with borderless printing and HP Real Life Technologies selected (these are found in the HP Smart app on my Windows machine) gave me pretty good results although I felt the colors in the printed photos could have been richer and deeper. They weren't bad, just average. To scan anything, you must download and use the HP Smart app. Scanning was very easy and you can choose where you want to save your document. Documents are clear and accurate and you can scan at up to 1200dpi. The ink tanks are very similar to other printer brands I've used, and this is finally a huge step in the right direction. People don't want to spend $80 on a set of new print cartridges HP, it's high time you realized that. I can only assume similar ink usage from my other ink tank printer and since the bottles are the same size, I would expect to get a year or more out of this set of bottles. The black bottle does give you more ink than will fit in the tank, so you will have leftover black ink for later on. The other bottles' contents all fit into each of the tanks. Filling the tanks is super easy and is one of the reasons that ink tank printers are so popular. Unless you put the wrong color ink in one of the tanks (there is actually nothing preventing you from doing this), you won't have any trouble. Other ink tank printer brands key the different colored ink bottles so that they can only be used in the correct tank. This is not the case on the HP Smart Tank.
For the most part, this printer performs well enough, however you may find that there are a few downsides to it too. First of all, you cannot print full duplex automatically. It will not flip the page over for you and print on the other side as well. It does offer a “manual” duplex mode where you print one side, then have to run over and actually flip the page manually and reload it into the print tray to print the back side of the page. Honestly, I thought we were done with that kind of thing a long time ago. I haven't encountered that on a new printer in a long time. Especially one at this price. The second annoyance is the tiny little paper tray. It stores the paper vertically at the rear of the printer and claims a capacity of 100 sheets. I believe they are being very optimistic with that number. So the ink capacity went way up, but the paper storage went way down. I'm somewhat on the fence with this printer. Without question the ink tank printers are the way to go, but the small paper tray with the absence of full duplex printing combined with the complaints I have about usage and information permissions put me about right in the middle. All in all, an average performing printer with ink tanks that will save you money in the long run.

Good little vac for a small home
on September 21, 2023
Posted by: enem156
I really like Shark products. They just make things right. I've used and owned quite a few of their vacuums and they work well and hold up just as well. The Shark Detect Pro Cordless Stick Vacuum is likewise a well designed machine but with some caveats.
To be entirely fair, this is a small stick vac. I get the impression that this would be a great addition to any apartment or condo. This is not to say it doesn't work well, it does. It's the smaller compact size that makes me think this. None of these statements are negative, they just describe what I feel would be the best application for this machine. Let's start with the head unit. The brush bar is made of a soft felt-like material with spiraled rubber fins. This is made to work on both hard floors and carpet, but works far better on hard floors. If you have a larger home, this would be an ideal stick vac for your kitchen area or entryway. The head is very maneuverable and because of it's small size can get in between kitchen chairs and around cabinets very easily. The brush bar can be removed from the head unit with the press of a button and a pull. This allows for easy cleaning. The whole head is detachable in case you want to use the aluminum pole by itself or with the included crevice tool. The pole itself is also detachable from the motor unit. There's also a row of LED lights along the front edge of the brush unit. These LEDs only come on when they are needed and will illuminate the left half or right half or both, depending on what the light sensor detects. This is a nice feature and helps to conserve the battery power.
The motor unit is the brains and power of the unit. It's a very sleek little machine and looks really cool while also remaining lightweight. The battery gets installed at the bottom of the handle. When it needs charging, you can remove it from the vacuum, or just plug the charger in while the battery is still installed in the handle. This allows you to store the stick vac where there is no power outlet and remove the battery so it can be charged elsewhere. There is a HEPA filter located under a front cover. It's accessible by rotating the collar to the unlock position so that the front cover can be removed. I must admit I had a little trouble with the cover always falling off until I realized that the locking collar was there. After I learned that tip, I had no trouble. Beneath the HEPA filter location is the dust cup assembly. There's also a filter in the dust cup which will need occasional cleaning and can be removed by opening the dust cup and depressing the two side buttons to pull the assembly out. The buttons and locks are very well integrated into the design so you may have to look close to find them. To open the dust cup, there's one button to depress which pops open the front of the dust cup. The cup itself does not need to be removed to empty it, just hold it over the garbage, hit the button and the hinged portion of the dust cup drops down allowing emptying. A note on the dust cup, it's small, it's very small. You basically need to empty it after each use. This is also easier to do if you detach the pole portion.
This is a very compact machine and as such doesn't come with a base to park it in. In fact, you can stand the vac up, remove the motor unit and store it on the cradle located on the pole assembly. This is ideal for closet storage, especially if you are going to remove the battery for charging. It's all pretty self contained (except for the crevice tool, which you'll need to store separately).
So the motor controls are pretty basic. There's a power button and a mode button which lets you select either eco mode, auto mode or boost mode. I found the auto mode to work very well. Amazingly well in fact. In this mode the motor ramps up when needed and goes back to standard power when on open floor. When one or the other edge of the head unit is against the wall or cabinets, the motor automatically ramps up to create more suction at the corner edge. This happens if the head unit is in a corner as well. It saves battery power in the long run and gives a boost of suction when you're vacuuming along baseboards or cabinets. It picked up everything on the floor that I went over the first time. I didn't need to continuously go over a section to make sure it was clean, but I tend to vacuum slowly and let the machine work. This is just how I use my vacuums, so maybe this has some affect on how well the machine works. Regardless, I really liked this vacuum. It is small and the dust cup is also very small, but if you're using it for your hard floors or just in the kitchen areas, it's a really competent stick vac. Where it has more trouble is on carpeting. If you have a condo or an apartment, this is a really compact and capable stick vac with a lot of features. I like the design of the head unit and how the brush bar is able to be removed very easily. The auto mode works very well and you really don't need to worry about changing modes manually unless you want to. Once again, a good design from Shark.

Cool retro look, clean punchy sound
on September 17, 2023
Posted by: enem156
The JBL Authentics 300 is a really cool retro looking speaker. I love the style of it. It takes me back to a time when things were made to last. The body of the cabinet is covered in a nice black, textured leather-like material that gives the speaker a quality look and feel. Combine that with the light gold trim on the front and handle hinge and you have a very sharp and clean look. The speaker grill likewise has a retro look to it. It looks like when grills used to be made out of black foam. This grill has that same look but is a lot sturdier and more rigid which feels like it will hold up very well to use. The handle is another plus. It too is covered in a stitched leather-like material. It has a simple hinge on each side that let you push it back out of the way when playing it, but pull it up for carrying. It's a sturdy handle that can easily carry all 10lbs of it's weight with confidence.
The jacks on the back are all recessed to keep them safe. You have the AC input, a USB-C jack, a 3.5mm input jack and an RJ45 network jack. There's also a switch on the top rear of the back panel that let's you turn on or off the voice assistant feature. Underneath the cabinet are four arched rubber feet to help it stay where you put it and also isolate the sound. The top of the cabinet has three knobs. One for volume, and two more for tone (bass and treble). Each knob has an illuminated ring that lights up when making adjustments either by manually turning them or by using your phone. These serve as kind of virtual dials by lighting up more or less of the ring as you rotate the knobs to the right to increase, or the left to decrease. In the center of the volume knob, there's a push button that replicates basic transport controls. One press for pause/play, two presses for next track and three presses for last track. In addition to the knobs, there are three separate buttons. One is a power button to turn the speaker on and off, a second is a Bluetooth button used for pairing, and a third is what JBL refers to a a Moment button. This lets you set up favorite settings through the JBL ONE app. The top also includes an illuminated battery LED bar that shows the current battery life.
Pairing was simple and it connected via Bluetooth the first time I tried it, no app needed. However, you do have the option of downloading the free JBL ONE app from your favorite app store. I do appreciate when the companion app is named something intuitive. This one is actually named JBL ONE, making it easy to find later. The app will show you what's playing and give you some transport controls. There's also a three band graphic equalizer which does help to fine tune the sound. You'll also find links to the manual as well as documentation on how to set up additional Authentics speakers for either stereo playback (using two individual speakers) or to have music playing in different areas of your house. It also includes various streaming apps to choose from. You will need the app to configure your Moment (favorite) settings and also to download and install any firmware updates (which it already did twice since I've been using it). Whether you like Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa, JBL has you covered. You can use either one, or both simultaneously. There's a small LED behind the front grill that will let you know the state of your voice assistant connection. You can also choose whether or not to use any assistants by switching the slider switch on the rear panel, either on or off. If you want to use a hardwire connection between your JBL Authentics 300 and a computer or phone, you have that option as well with the 3.5mm jack.
If you like deep, punchy bass response, you won't be disappointed. The 300 delivers that in spades. On the bottom panel, there's a rubber insert that looks like it would be a subwoofer, except that the edges of it are sealed to the bottom panel making me think that it functions more as an active bass port. It does move in and out as a sub would. Either way, it definitely contributes to the bass you hear, and radiates in all directions. That being said, I found that placing the speaker on a hard flat surface works best as opposed to something like a table, although you can certainly do that, you get the best bass response from positioning it on the floor and having it several feet away. The midrange is very clear and not overpowering. The high end is also quite clean and doesn't make the overall sound come off as tinny. This of course can all be tuned to your liking with the graphic EQ in the app and with experimenting with speaker placement. For the most part, I listen to a wide variety of rock, but my tastes swing pretty wide into jazz, electronica, new age and acoustic. None of the different styles I listened to disappointed me in any way. I enjoyed everything I listened to and wanted to keep experimenting with the different styles I like. The sound quality is comparable with other JBL products I owned and heard over the past (too many years to admit to). My whole experience with the Authentics 300 was a very fun and satisfying one. I love the retro styling and colors. It's very portable and easy to carry and has a beautiful leather-like finish. The controls are intuitive and laid out well. There's just enough to let you feel nothing is missing, and not any extraneous buttons that make you think; what the heck does that button do? JBL has been in the speaker business for a long, long time, and it's a pleasure to see and hear this level of quality. You just feel that you've chosen something special from a respected audio manufacturer. Really nicely done.

Comfortable, great sound, very durable

I own a lot of different ear buds, but this is my first pair of Jabra buds. From what I've read about them, I'm hopeful they will do better than most of the buds I currently have, most of which fall far short on comfort and sound quality.
Setting these buds up is a piece of cake. I didn't need the app to do it, which is a big plus. They paired with my phone without any trouble. As soon as you remove them from the charging case, they're powered up and ready to go. Not crazy about the case having a rounded bottom. It does not stand up on it's own, it needs to lay on it's back but since the lid flips back to open, it makes it a bit awkward to have the lid open and the case laying on the table. The lid has a detent which helps to keep it open while in the laying position, but it's not really enough of one to keep the lid from wanting to close. The charging port is on the rounded bottom of the case and is thankfully a USB-C connection, which make it extremely easy to plug the charging cable into. There are also two small LED indicators on the case. One on the outside to show the overall charge condition of the case itself and another one on the inside which shows the condition of the buds. Small LEDs but quite bright. They let you see at a glance the state of the charge for both.
Unlike the majority of ear buds I've used, these guys just fit from the moment I put them in. Absolutely amazing. I've never had that happen before. The only thing I needed to do was pick the right size gel tips. They fit snugly without having to cram them so deep into my ears that they hurt. These guys just slid into place and made a tight seal to allow for really good bass response. The box claims that Jabra scanned 62,000 ears to create the perfect fit, and I can honestly say however they used that information, it worked! They feel snug yet very light in my ears. Really a pleasure to wear them, they stay in place perfectly, they're not overly big, so they always seem secure. I never felt like if I moved a certain way or went for a run that they would move around and cause me aggravation to re-seat them. One box checked, great fit!
On to the sound. Everyone has their favorite music app, mine happens to be power amp. The bass response on these buds is really fantastic. This is how ear buds should sound. They have plenty of volume and the sound quality is really good! Deep, rich, punchy bass you can feel, clear mids and pleasant highs without being tinny at all. I was really surprised and blown away by both the fit and the sound. If you take the time to download the app, you get a bunch of additional features. You don't need the app to use the buds, but I do recommend it. There are some helpful pages that show the basic controls and how to wear them. Aside from that, there are battery level readouts, noise cancellation state, Dolby spacial sound, graphic equillizer and sound presets. I found all of them to be helpful in fine tuning the sound. Not sold on the spacial sound setting. It seemed to make the overall sound more thin. Which is the opposite of what I expected. The EQ presets work very well, but if you want more control, you can use the graphic EQ to dial in the sound how you want, and save your settings as a music preset. I found the noise canceling settings to work well. Again, you have a choice of whether to use the Active Noise Cancellation, the HearThrough or Off modes. I really like that by using one of the settings, it doesn't affect the sound of the music. On other ear buds, that's not the case. Also, another benefit of downloading the app is that you can register your buds for a 2 year warranty!
Aside from the above listed positives, they're also US Military Grade Durability. I'm afraid I haven't had them long enough to really put this to the test, but they seem very solid and well made. They're military grade rating also means they've passed 9 durability tests and are protected against dust, water and sweat. All in all, a really great set of ear buds and currently far and away my favorite set in my collection of buds. Comfort is really an underrated feature. These guys have the fit down cold. On top of that they really sound great. Very well done Jabra, I'm very glad I gave them a try!

Not enough suction
By BHIHIFI
I bought this after reading a positive review in a leading consumer magazine. It comes with an impressive number of accessories but the suction is weak. It would not even vacuum up bits of grass on my doormat. I returned it and bought the portable Dyson instead. Night and day difference.

Is the stand on the back removable?

I'm curious if the stand can be removed so the monitor could be mounted or lay flat on a table.
Yes, it is removable. It has a standard 100 X 100 VESA mount under the easel stand.

Can you install a full version of microsoft office on the Slate 21?

No. You can only install Android apps. MS Office is available in a mobile edition though, and can be found on the Google Play store. It also comes with Kingsoft office pre-installed which is a nice mobile Office-like app that allows you to do a lot of the things that you would using Office.

Keyboard / mouse required? And multi-tasking

Are the keyboard and mouse required for the Slate 21? Or can we just use it as a tablet device with onscreen keyboard if need be?

Also, can it multi-task, meaning run two apps simultaneously for instance, netflix on one side of the screen and chrome on the other?

Thank you for help!

Uday Khosla
The keyboard and mouse are not required. We use ours without them.
As far as multitasking several apps at once, no. So far that's a bit of a reach for an Android machine.
