Serious piece of healthcare equipment

Our family has gone through a number of electric toothbrushes over the years from the cheap throwaway types to higher end Oral B's. The Philips is quite a noticeable upgrade. While there are a number of feature improvements here, I think the higher frequency of pulsing (3100!) is probably the most useful in getting that clean fresh feeling. If you're upgrading from an older style, it's immediately apparent that you're using a better technology.
Some of the other features are not necessarily new, but take a different approach - such as the two minute timer which turns the brush off (opposed to Oral B's momentary pulse), and the quad pacer which tells you to shift left or right, up or down. Same with the excess pressure notification, although the way the Philips operates at a higher frequency, you'll probably find a lesser need to press harder.
I would like to try the varying modes, however that necessitates purchasing an additional brush pack. Each of the 3 modes requires an individual brush; the head identifies the brush that's currently installed and adjusts the mode accordingly. I'll probably try a different mode once it's time for a brush change (which is also timed.) They're not exactly cheap, at near $50 for a 4 pack, but then again, neither are the other brands. I usually look for a sale ahead of time.
The lithium battery as opposed to Ni-Cad is great, NiCads not only don't last as long, but degrade over time, so I expect this unit will give me longer usable life. The other thing is bathroom counter space is always at a premium, as are electric outlets. As I'm getting at least a week's worth of charge at a time, I've actually placed the charging unit on a small shelf I have right outside the bathroom - leaving the plug free for daily use like the hair drier, shaver, etc. One small but appreciated feature - having a bathroom in close proximity to the bed, I was always annoyed after brushing my teeth, turning out the light & going to bed, only to be greeted by the flashing light of the charging. The light on the Philips is small & unobtrusive, and in any case, don't have to charge it that often anyway. That might sound a little trivial, but something I appreciated.
If you're in the market for a new brush, this one is worth a look.

Excellent service, Linksys quality
on March 12, 2018

Location description - two level home, 2000 sq ft, router located in extreme corner of lower level. Always had an issue connecting to opposite corner of upper level, have tried numerous products from various manufacturers. Currently have an Orbi mesh network (2 units, one up, one down) that has provided good service, but has a habit of occasionally disconnecting & requiring reboot. I was looking for a set & forget solution.
Upon unboxing & reading setup instructions, I decided to try the LInksys spot finder to confirm I was receiving good signal with the Orbi setup. While the Orbi was good, I was still only receiving 3 or 4 bars signal in the extreme upstairs corner. I disconnected the current setup, and installed the Linksys, again using the Spot Finder feature.
I've had this installed about a week, and haven't had to look at it twice. All devices had no problem recognizing the new signal, and we've had multiple streams going simultaneously with no issues. And that pc in the corner upstairs - nice strong signal.
I've always had good service from any Linksys devices, I've never taken one out of service for failure, only to upgrade. In my opinion, they're my "go to" brand when looking for a tech upgrade. Sometimes a few bucks more than the competition, but well worth it for solid performance.

Better than expected quality at this price point
on February 25, 2018

I have to say i was initially disappointed when i first set this TV up. I was replacing an almost 10 year old plasma; and after viewing the 4K tv's friends, relatives, and neighbors had purchased for Black Friday & the holiday season, i was expecting dramatic improvement.
After hanging it, turning it on, and trying a variety of inputs (tuner, dvd, memory stick), i was pretty much underwhelmed. I started doing some research, seeing if others were experiencing the same issue. I came upon a review here (user optimummind) who also was disappointed with the initial setup. After going deep into the menus and adjusting various settings, he came across a setup that vastly improved picture quality, blackness, color, and the overall quality. I'll repeat those settings here, and in doing so, thank him for his advice.
*Settings ->
Picture -Backlight = Middle
Picture Mode = Vivid
Contrast = 70
Brightness = 50
Color = 48
Tint: G1
Sharpness = 10
Aspect Ratio = Wide
HDMI 2.0 Format Enhanced format
Advanced Picture Options
Overscan = On -
Color Temperature: Mid-Low
Digital Noise Reduction = Medium
Active Contrast: High
Expert Settings = (Default)
*Settings -> Sound -Sound Mode = Theater (I use Music mode for music videos)
TotalSonics = On
TotalSurround = On
TotalVolume = Off (default)
Advanced Audio Settings = Default
I agree with him that these units were turned out from the factory with very lackluster settings.
While i now have a greatly improved picture, there's really not much that can be done with the audio - i tried adjusting the controls, but, as with almost every flat screen on the market, the sound is weak & tinny. Just take it for granted that you'll want some audio enhancement to compliment the picture.
I was trying to get some info on the ARC (audio return channel) feature, as the included manual is somewhat sparse. For those that aren't aware, ARC is a feature that uses the HDMI cabling as a 2 way street, meaning it talks back to your soundbar/receiver (if so equipped), allowing you to simplify cabling (1 instead of 2.) Besides simplifying, this should also eliminate the annoying lip sync problem so common in these kind of setups.
While trying to research this, I found that Sharp does not acknowledge this tv on it's website - no listing or manual whatsoever. Sharp & HiSense are now one and the same, and HiSense has an equivalent tv on the market; that one is also omitted on the website. It's like these 2 tv's don't exist. Makes you wonder if you'll ever get any kind of software programming updates. The built in Amazon & Netflix worked well for me, but what if they update their software - a year or two down the road you might have to hook your Roku back up to enjoy those services.
I do have one major caveat with this tv. I did a wall mount, and was very surprised to see that attaching bolts were not included. When i checked the manual, I see they recommended M6 size bolts, as for length, they should have a mounting depth of 9.5-11.5mm. I made a trip to home depot for the bolts, all the time shaking my head. I do have a mechanical background, and in my estimation, an M6 size bolt doesn't seem to be the right choice for hanging a 40 pound item on the wall. I'm sure this was all worked out by their engineering department, but i remain leery about their choice. They did supply the screws for the table mount, and they're even smaller - about the thickness of screw that you use to put a cover plate on your electrical wall outlet. They really cheaped out in this department. For this reason alone, I knocked this review down 1 star - all for 25 cents worth of hardware.
All said & done, if you're looking at this price point, you'd be hard put to get this much screen for the price.

Excellent value for the price
on February 5, 2018
Posted by: ferrari
from New Jersey, USA
About 5 years ago, I purchased the first Acer Chromebook to come to market; primarily due to my fascination with the ability to be able to purchase a laptop for less than $200. I recognized at the time that this was no desktop or full size laptop replacement, but thought it would serve well as a second machine to keep handy for quick browsing, email, etc. It was a curiosity for a bit, but soon became the source of continual family complaints. The touchpad was finicky, leading to a lot of misclicks, the resolution wasn't the greatest, and neither was the battery life. After 6 months it pretty much gave up half its run time, and I had to purchase a new one after a year.
But, 5 years is a long time as far as new tech goes (how often do you change your phone nowadays), and to all appearances, they haven't ignored the chromebook.
First off, not even sure a 15.6 screen can be called a book - more like a magazine! The resolution has improved dramatically, and doesn't get fuzzy around the edges The finish of the screen is excellent, while moving from room to room under various lighting conditions I couldn't detect any glare; the screen remained bright & clear no matter the light intensity or angle.
I must admit I'm no millennial, and didn't grow up with a phone attached to me, so I was never comfortable with disposing of the left & right buttons on the touchpad - I prefer a solid tactile click. If you're someone that was disenchanted with an early Chromebook touchpad, it's an improvement that I appreciated greatly.
I was also surprised at the inclusion of an SSD drive at this price point - sure you don't get terabyte size, but it does wonders for battery life. I didn't have a timer clock on it, but it's had intermittent use for 5-6 days now, and it's still not screaming for an electric socket. Hopefully the life cycle of the battery itself has been extended as well.
The other surprise was the inclusion of quality speakers versus the weak, tinny sound of the original Chromebooks that had worse sound than what comes out of your phone speaker.
I guess my major point is that if, like me, you were disappointed with a first generation Chromebook, you might want to give this a look over. It's much more of a comfortable & satisfying machine to use, has a full size screen, better sound, better battery life, and better looking than its predecessor. All at the same price it was 5 years ago - good deal.

An excellent kitchen addition
on December 26, 2017

It's fair to say that over the years, I've gone through more than my fair share of $50-$75 toaster ovens. This is not your mother's toaster oven. The DeLonghi does everything your cheap toaster does (better of course) but also brings a new dimension to the countertop appliance that's been around forever.
What makes all the difference to me is the addition of a preheating that doesn't turn the coils on full blast to burn the outside of your food while the interior is ice cold. That, and the convection feature insure you get your dish properly heated. If you're upgrading from a conventional toaster oven you'll truly appreciate the convenience this brings. I always hated turning on the oven in the midst of summer to get a small item heated - wait for the oven to heat, then have to deal with the heat venting off it for the next couple of hours. The DeLonghi heats instantly, and the exterior actually remains pretty cool - nicely insulated.
I've had good experiences with DeLonghi products, I had one of their higher end coffee/espresso machines for 5 years when I saw a good deal on a newer model. I passed my original down to my niece two years ago, and it's still going great without a hiccup. Hopefully I'll have a similar experience with this model.

Serious machinery - not a toy for an 8 year old.
on November 13, 2017
Posted by: ferrari
from New Jersey, USA
I've been an RC fan for quite some years. The bulk of my purchases have been from Tamiya, a recognized producer of high end r/c products. I've also purchased a few lower end vehicles in the sub $100 range, and to a one, they've all been disappointments.
I'd put the Cyclone right up there with a similar Tamiya product. First off, it's ready to run out of the box - just make the battery connection. Typical 2 clip style to change/charge the battery. The fact they include a spare battery in the package price is a definite plus and the Nickel Metal Hydrides are a better product than the typical NiCads. Having Lithiums instead would be an over the top addition, but I can understand the omission as the batteries alone would've been over $100.
This thing is a rocket! Faster than a dog chasing a squirrel! That comes with a caveat though - I wouldn't recommend this for a sub-10 or 12 year old - at the claimed 20 mph speed, it can do some damage in the hands of the irresponsible. Especially since it carries some weight.
The heft of it speaks to the quality build. The oil filled adjustable shocks, sealed electronics, and the better than average wheel/tire combo show this to be a serious machine. It's also good that replacement parts and upgrades are readily available. If you have a full service hobby store in the area, most likely in stock; if not, the company supplies mail order.
One thing i didn't like - I saw a review that stated that the pinion gear was metal, but the spur gear it drives was plastic. I didn't take it apart to see, but the drive mechanism should be all metal. Luckily, a bronze spur gear is available for the unit; next time I go to the hobby shop that will be my first upgrade.
I was skeptical at first, but have to say I was pretty surprised at the overall build & performance of the vehicle given the price point. I'll be on the lookout for more Redcat products in the future.

Wow - I can't say enough about these headphones
on October 21, 2017
Posted by: ferrari
from New Jersey, USA
I've been following some reviews on these headphones; and am pretty surprised at the universal acclaim. So i was pretty happy to get to try a set. And after trying them, they made me angry! Why? Because they instantly turned my Bose QC35's into an instant relic.
While i always recognized Sony as putting out a solid reliable product, they were never the one with the latest or most features per product dollar - they seemed to always choose the conservative route. This headset changes that - it's solid, feature rich, and an excellent dollar value in this market niche.
The companion app is my favorite feature - and it's no lightweight. You can adjust EQ's, spacial & surround, has battery life, and Bluetooth codec. And if that isn't enough, it will interface with your phone's accelerometer to decide if you're walking, jogging, running, sitting on a subway, or lounging in your favorite recliner.
The touch controls allow swiping or tap to control volume, tracking, or to turn noise cancellation on/off for either a short conversation or to allow ambient sound.
The included 3.5 mm cable allows you to connect wired to either insure optimal connection or if battery life is low.
Air pressure optimizer? What the heck is that?! Well, it says it knows if you're on a plane and adjusts for it. Haven't been on a plane with them, but i'll be sure to bring these along to try it on my next flight. Unbelievable.
The claim on these is for a 30 hour battery life, I ran these about halfway down; plugged them in and was fully charged & ready to go in less than 10 minutes.
All this, and I haven't said anything yet about noise cancelling, which is the main reason you'd buy these. Have no fear - (Bose certainly will when their engineers get hold of these). Hands down, the best I've ever heard.
This is a totally solid product; and an excellent value for the price. I have no qualms about giving them a full 5 stars.

Nice, but not the answer to all things
on October 19, 2017
Posted by: ferrari
from New Jersey, USA
The first thing you notice unboxing this is the solid feel & heft of it. And the Swedish design appearance allows it to sit out on your counter looking much better than your traditional mixer/handheld.
The power is more than adequate. To me, the standout feature on this is the trigger button. Squeeze harder for more power. My initial thought was that it would be difficult to maintain a steady speed, but the trigger has a nice tactile feel to it. Other handhelds opt for a turbo button, which i find is likely to cause a splash on engagement. With the Avance, you can gradually increase the speed to where you want it, and not get your smoothie or whipped cream all over the counter.
I would not recommend giving this to the kids. The titanium coated blade is sharp. When your mashed potatoes get jammed up in the well, as will happen with any blender, you don't want to be sticking your fingers in there. This is not a hand mixer that you can lick the whipped cream off the blades!
There are cautionary warnings about the blades, not just for sharpness. Generally speaking, sharp also = brittle. The instructions state not to use with ice, frozen meat, or any other hard, dense material.
What i didn't like is that it isn't dishwasher safe. As with all my other food preparation product, i like the confidence that comes from the high heat & thoroughness of a dishwasher cycle.
One final reason i didn't give this 5 stars is price - competitors in this price range package included extras - be it an whisk attachment, mini blender, or even containers.
But i do love that speed control!

Replaceable blades make this a winner
on October 19, 2017
Posted by: ferrari
from New Jersey, USA
They call this a "hybrid", but it's not really a shaver. Well, maybe. The claim is that it will shave to a "5 o'clock shadow", but after skipping a couple of days, it's really more of a 5 o'clock tomorrow. To be used a shaver, it's meant for someone who keeps a closely trimmed beard.
That aside, this is an excellent trimmer. The almost infinitely adjustable head makes it easy to give a uniform look to your beard & sideburns. I also like the slenderness of it - you're working a smaller part of your face, and that gives a nicer cut.
I've owned a huge amount of these things, and for about $25 each, once it gives me the first "pinch", i know it's time to trash it for a new one. So i welcome the idea of the replaceable blade (yes, blade, not head.) I haven't had it long enough to test the claim of 4 month replacement cycle; however i generally take these claims with a grain of salt and my expectation is to get half that time. I see a 2 pack of blades goes for about $24.
The other thing you get by going with the Pro model is a lithium battery instead of a nicad. That's nice not only for longer life, but lithiums will give you the rated voltage over the length of the charge, whereas the voltage on nicads lower as the battery drains. And that means more pinches & jammed blades.
I also like the compact setup of it. The bath vanity & shelves are always competing with a hundred different products, so a space saver is always welcome.
I do really like the operation of this unit, the reason i didn't give it the 5th star is well within 2 years you're going to double the price of the trimmer in replacement blades. Either the price of the trimmer or the blades needs to come down somewhat to make it an outstanding buy.

Luxury. Period.
on October 5, 2017
Posted by: ferrari
from New Jersey, USA
Opening the box on these B&O's, you immediately recognize they're something special. I was first drawn to the look of the leather. Run your fingers over the plush memory foam and you know they're going to feel good. And that they do.
I'll put it out there that I'm a vinyl guy. A high end vinyl guy. The first time i put these over my head with the noise cancellation turned on, it sort of set an atmosphere. A bit difficult to explain, but while i had Heart's "Crazy on you" cued on the turntable, I pulled it off. I wanted to listen to Petty's "Wildflowers" instead; something i could be immersed in without any outside distraction.
For those of you audiophile vinyl fans out there, you know the subtle difference between various pressings/masterings of a particular recording. Some round out the sound for a softer listening experience; others focus on crispness & immediacy. Maybe it's a psychological effect that the comfort of this headset had on me, but I wanted to hear things conducive to closing your eyes, relaxing, and being absorbed into the music. I've tried high end Bose & Audio Technica, and i can't really say that the overall sound is better. Yes, they all have their own "flavor", and that's a very subjective thing. But i can definitively say that these were the most comfortable.
One thing that stood out to me is that the battery is replaceable; and that's not the case with other high end phones. A dead or weak battery is either an end of life experience, or cause to send it back to the manufacturer for replacement. This makes a statement that this headset is built to last and not a throwaway. That's what you want to see at this price point.
I'm not crazy about the touch controls - swipe up/down for noise cancellation; circular motion to raise/lower volume, the only one i'm really comfortable with is the simple tap to mute. Then again, i'm old school, and was always more comfortable with a mouse than a touchpad. My children would have a different opinion.
The way i look at these is, if you're willing to spend this much on a set of headphones; well, let me put it this way. I'll put a Ferrari, a Lamborghini, and a Bentley in front of you. They all go 0-60 in 3 seconds. Which one do you want? The B&O's are the Bentley with the seats you sink into. Good choice.

Can you listen to music or not? One answer says only the sounds from the app and another answer says yes you can listen to music. I want to listen to music from Youtube? Can I do this?

No - there is no input from anything other than the Bose App it comes with. Maybe on a future update, for now all you get is the built in soundscapes.

How load is it? I've used an Oreck XL upright and a Eureka Mighty Mite and would hope it's no louder as those. I prefer bagged vacuums but want to try the BISSELL Pet Hair Eraser because of its claims of not getting hair tangled on the roller.

I don't own the units you mentioned, I have a Miele canister, and it's no louder than that. I was surprised at it, as it does have great suction, and would have thought it should've been louder for the power it has. So far happy with the unit.
