Easy to ride, incredibly fun and well built

I ordered it for my son who is 12 and, of course, had to test it out. I took it out of the box and easily assembled the two parts. I downloaded the app and turned it on. The ninebot came to life with lights and beeps and I got on it (I am a spry 50 year old with not much fear). I assumed I would fall off and possibly break a hip. I stepped onto the Segway and did a little back and forth but quickly became accustomed to it. Now here is where I made a mistake. I didn't start the app and I didn't do the instructional riding course. Don't be like me! I took it outside and attempted to ride it, it would speed up and then slow way down which made it very difficult to ride. I tried several times and I thought it was not working properly or was too hard to ride. I took it back inside and then started the app. It makes you go through a short tutorial explaining the dos and don'ts and basic safety and operations of the Ninebot. After that it makes you perform several basic operations on the scooter (turns, forward, backward, rotate right and left 360 degrees) and then, lo and behold, it unlocks one level on the speed and you can ride faster. Then after you ride 2 kilometers it unlocks the full speed.
It literally took about 20 minutes to go from never having ridden one of these to riding comfortably and doing all sorts of turns and spins. The only consistent problem is riding backwards and then turning sharply which threw me off a couple of times.
I had to give it to my son for his birthday and I was concerned because he is not athletic or particularly coordinated. He too, mastered the thing in about twenty minutes. He experienced the same problem backing and turning quickly and getting thrown off but other than that he got it down very quickly.
The Ninebot app has several cool options including limiting the speed, the aforementioned riding tutorial (which should be given to every first time rider), light control, speed control and, one of the best things...remote control. You can have your robot come to you so you never need to walk again (be careful on the remote control, the vehicle doesn't stop quickly and you may run it into furniture and then have your wife tell you "That's why we don't play with robot scooters in the house."
In conclusion, the Segway Ninebot is well worth the money and easy to use. It almost seems intuitive and riding it is the closest thing to hovering I have ever experienced. If you can afford it (and Best Buy Card has 18 month interest free payments on it) get one, heck get two. That's what I am thinking about doing.
