Good Espresso, Not Quite Ready
on September 9, 2020
Posted by: Nerdninja

First off, I'm not entirely sure why this is a connected device. There's an app that helps you to get it set up on your home network and then the app is useless for anything other than ordering more pods. Unfortunately that's the only way to find pods, too. I can't find the newer Vertuo pods anywhere except to order from Nespresso or a couple other sites. There is mention of Nespresso "Boutiques" that carry them, but I have none that are convenient for me. If you're expecting to run to the grocery store to get pods, you likely won't find them. I'm hoping this changes soon.
The pods themselves have barcodes around the outside that the machine reads and uses to ensure the proper temperature and pressure are set for that particular blend. This ensures good coffee and espresso, but I'm not big on what equates to DRM on physical objects.
The espresso does come out very good with a nice rich foam on top and excellent flavor.
While brewing, however, the machine makes a lit of noise. A lot. I've had other single-cup brewers and have never heard anything like this before. It makes a loud pump sound and some kind of loud whirring sound in unison. So much so that I need to announce I'm making coffee so my wife can pause the TV.
Also, I've had it "lock up" on me once and refuse to brew. A quick online search revealed that I had to unplug the machine and wait a minute, then plug it back in. It worked from there.
I'm certain that with some updates and better availability of pods I will enjoy the machine more, but it just doesn't seem ready yet.

Great for Quick Jobs

The main differentiator between this chopper and similarly sized food processors is that this one is completely cordless. Once charged you can take it camping or tailgating if that's your thing. I was surprised to find it well charged out of the box. I decided to charge it up anyway, just to be sure I had enough juice to work on the salsa I was eagerly waiting to make.
That's where I realized something odd. You can only use it wirelessly. There is no way to use it while it's plugged in. In fact. the power switch is set up so that you can't physically switch it on while charging. Therefore, you need to think ahead and be sure you have a charge before you can make something.
I do like that it really is just a chopper, not a small food processor. There aren't a ton of attachments to keep track of, just a blade and an attachment for whipping.
As for the salsa, I threw in two halved tomatoes, half a small onion and a bunch of cilantro, and a splash of balsamic vinegar and pulsed the thumb switch integrated into the handle. In a few seconds I had a pretty decent salsa! Despite pulsing very quickly it did make more of a thick puree than a thick salsa, but it was still tasty!
Cleanup is great, the blade comes out with the middle spindle and then slips off as a piece of it's own to easily clean. Then rinse out the cup, wash it down with soap and let it air dry. No complicated attachments or nooks that hold food.

Dare I Say Perfect?
on July 10, 2020
Posted by: Nerdninja
from Pennsylvania
Full disclosure, I'm a member of the Best Buy Tech Insider Network. Reviewers in this invitation-only program are provided products for the purpose of writing honest, unbiased reviews. My honest, unbiased review that this laptop, out of the dozens I've owned over the years (and desktops, too for that matter) is my absolute favorite and possibly a perfect machine.
First off, it's amazingly sleek. It's thin and fairly lightweight. Wile it seems heavier than a MacBook pro I don't think it's much heavier. I've gone back and forth between Mac and Windows many times and this may be the machine that keeps me on the Windows side, for several reasons.
First off, it's gorgeous. The titanium finish is clean and nicely textured. The screen has a very small bezel. Nothing is gaudy or ostentatious about it, it just looks professional and grown up, even understated. This is my first surface book. The hinge is a little weird and the way it closes with the gap in the back takes some getting used to, but I'm kind of glad it does. Having owned MacBooks that close flat and collect grease from the keyboard on the screen this is a welcome change.
Speaking of the hinge, the process of "ejecting" the screen from the hinge is just way too cool. There's an eject button that physically unlatches the screen (it's in there safely!) and hands off video processing duty from the discreet Nvidia 1660ti to the incorporated Intel GPU smoothly.
I'm completely impressed with the power that's packed in this thin chassis. I've been working professionally in video production for the last couple decades, most recently in online video asset management and IT. Macs have always been preferred in this area because of their power and stability. That said, after playing with the Surface Book for a few days I wouldn't trade it for anything.
One of the first things I tried was transcoding 4K video using Handbrake (the graphical front end for the industry favorite FFmpeg) using one of the GPU-assisted presets to go from 4K to 1080p. I was getting 130+ frames/second without the machine breaking a sweat. That's a little over 5X real time, or 12 minutes to transcode 60 minutes of footage. Impressive for a desktop, amazing for something this thin and light! If you're doing filmmaking or editing on the go You'll save a great deal of time transcoding and rendering. Keep in mind, however, that the internal SSD is 512GB and is not upgradeable. You will need to do some media management or use an external hard drive if you're working with a lot of footage.
Next off I loaded some high bitrate 4K footage shot on a Panasonic Lumix G7 into Adobe Premiere Pro 2020 using the built-in full size SD card reader. Again, the software took advantage of the Nvidia GPU to do the heavy lifting and was also helped along by the sheer amount of processing power. I was able to work with several layers of 4K footage in real time without having to drop to an intermediate codec or prerender the footage. Not only does Premiere benefit from the GPU/CPU combo, but also the 32 freaking gigabytes of RAM this thing packs helps to avoid memory paging, therefore speeding up real-time effects. Admittedly I've never used a machine with that much RAM and have never appreciated how much difference it makes. Add in the speed of the SSD and you'll be spoiled by how quickly you can edit. I tried piling on some real-time processing like unsharp mask and was still able to work in real-time. And all of this was working with playback in high quality. If you drop output to half-resolution you can probably do even more.
The 15" screen looks huge and has plenty of real-estate for the canvas, timeline and all the audio meters and video tools you need. The fans will get a bit loud while doing all of this, but not to the point of being distracting, and you're probably going to be monitoring audio through headphones or desktop monitors anyway. Color is amazing and I would feel confident doing color-correction on it. Backlighting is very even and neutral and colors are consistent at any angle. While the screen is a glossy glass I have no issues with glare from my overhead lights. I'm not certain, but it's likely there's some kind of internal anti-glare coating. If you want to work on a bigger monitor you can connect to one using a USB-C adaptor or the optional dock.
On the subject of headphones, I was disappointed there wasn't a headphone jack. Then, later in the first day I was shocked to find one on the top-right side of the screen. I assumed it would be on the base, but it was built into the screen for use in tablet mode. I can't imagine how they were able to fit one as it takes up almost the width of the tablet/screen. Really impressive. The quality of the built in DAC isn't anything to write home about, but it did drive my Sennheiser HD598SR headset with plenty of clean volume.
The built in speakers do a great job. Obviously there isn't much low-end, but they're not tinny at all and put out a lot of volume and separation. Movies sound great, and dialogue is clear. Overall sound from movies is very rich for a laptop. Again they're built into the screen, so that sound quality is there whether you're using it as a laptop or tablet.
Which leads me to another point, the fact that when you don't need all of the fancy GPU stuff you can take the screen off and use it as a tablet. I have a 12" iPad pro and wasn't sure what I would think of a 15" tablet, but man is it nice. Relaxing at the end of the day and watching movies and TV shows on a light, portable 4K screen is absolutely a treat! Battery life takes a hit (there are batteries in the tablet portion AND the base!) but I'm able to get 2-3 hours of media consumption at high brightness. Tablet mode is also a great way to review raw footage with other people without the awkwardness of trying to hold a laptop.
Also, since the Surface supports the Surface Pen, I would imagine this would be an amazing way to work on artwork in a lean-back kind of way.
While the Surface Book isn't a gaming laptop, I had to try out a couple games on that Nvidia GPU. I was able to get 50+ FPS in full resolution from Tom Clancy's the Division. Again, very impressive for something so portable. It also paired with my Xbox controller without a dongle. I have a dedicated gaming laptop from about three years ago and this outperforms it easily!
Ports are fairly sparse, with two USB ports on one side and a USB-C on the other next to the proprietary Surface connector. There are no USB ports on the tablet portion when disconnected. That may be my only complaint. There is another Surface connector, however, so you can charge while using the tablet. The USB-C port does not support Thunderbolt (None of Microsoft's stuff does though) so don't plan on using an eGPU or any Thunderbolt video hardware.
The keyboard is good and stiff and has a good feel to it. It's backlit, but I find the backlighting to be a little "blotchy" for lack of a better description. Given how thrilled I am with everything else it really is a minor observation.
I've become pretty jaded about using Windows machines for production and asset management, and this is the machine that turned that all around in a very short time. At this point I would highly recommend a Surface Book 3 for professional work, even if you're not planning on using it as a portable. I honestly see no compromise over using a desktop with the processing power of the SB3.

Clunky But Awesome

The Belkin boost charge has solved one of my biggest complaints with QI chargers, and that's the lack of decent viewing angle when charging horizontally. Unlike many other chargers, this one elevates the phone about two inches and tilts it back when in landscape mode, making watching videos much better than a lot of the chargers I've used
The overall look is kind of chunky and it takes up a little more desk space than other chargers. The horizontal viewing angle is made possible with a heavy plastic framework that extends past the puck, so it's not the most attractive thing in the world.
There are rubber feet on the bottom to keep it from sliding around (I have a glass desk and appreciate that it doesn't move when I put the phone down) and also rubber pads to protect your phone in either portrait or landscape mode.
It seems to charge quickly and works perfectly with my iPhone Xs MAX.
I also like that they included not only a USB cable, but also a wall adapter in the box. I've had far too many experiences where I've gotten a wireless charger only to discover I had to supply the AC adapter. Not the case here!
At this point I've amassed way too many wireless chargers, and I think this one is the best. I wouldn't hesitate to buy a few more to keep around the house!

Good looking and functional

If you have a Hoover ONEPWR device with more than one battery, or a couple of tools from the ONEPWR series, this is a good investment for keeping charged batteries on hand,
While it holds two batteries, it does not charge them at the same time. It charges one then the other. At first I couldn't figure out why the second battery wasn't charging before I realized it was by design. That's fine, as I can't imagine a situation where I would need both batteries to charge up as soon as possible,
Normally you would set something like this up somewhere out of sight, like a laundry room. Mine doesn't have a spare outlet, so my charger is in the living room, near the litter box that we constantly have to vacuum around. Fortunately the batteries and charger have a modern look to them. They look like something Apple would design, so the charger and batteries look fine on an end table in the corner. There is also an option to wall-mount the charger if you have an outlet nearby.
Charging status is shown with LED lights. I would prefer something like a numeric display or bar graph, but how often am I really going to check on the charging status of my vacuum's batteries?

Great for stairs
on June 17, 2020
Posted by: Nerdninja

We got this to replace a similar stick-style vacuum that was no longer working effectively. So far we haven't been disappointed at all!
Assembly was simple enough. The hardest part was getting past the mental block that the canister goes on sideways. For some reason I kept trying to put it on facing up and down like our old vacuum, so keep that in mind when putting it together!
I was surprised at how lightweight it is, even with the battery installed. It feels almost weightless thanks to the way it's balanced with most of the weight near the handle. The head swivels, making it really easy to move around obstacles and under things.
It's really great on the stairs. The head is narrow, so I was able to use it sideways across each step so it covers everything. Although we had been vacuuming the stairs regularly we still filled most of the canister with a pass on our staircase, meaning the old vacuum was leaving stuff behind.
The big test was the area around our cat's litter box. The vacuum we replaced would do okay picking up stray litter, but when we turned it off some of it would drop back out the front, and we would have to make a second pass. I was thrilled to see the Blade+ hold on to what was picked up with none of it returning.
My only complaint is that it's really hard to lean the vacuum against something if you need to stop and move something. It's top-heavy and swivels easily, so it wants to fall down. Fortunately it comes with a neat wall-hanger for storage, but you will need to get used to laying it down when working with it, or risk having it fall over onto something,
So far battery life seems very good, although we haven't done any longer jobs with it. Obviously you would probably want to use a full size vacuum for full rooms, as stick-style vacuums are really for smaller touch-up jobs and spills anyway.
Based on performance and versatility, I would highly recommend adding the Blade+ to your cleaning arsenal!

Heavy But Nice to Type on
on May 16, 2020
Posted by: Nerdninja
from Pennsylvania
Thus far I’ve been using my 12” iPad Pro with the Apple Keyboard Folio, so most of my point of reference is to that.
Straight off the bat, I will say that the Logitech is a much, much better typing experience. The Apple keyboard has very low-travel keys and makes a loud clacking sound. The Logitech, by comparison, is much more like typing on a decent laptop keyboard with a more familiar feel and nearly silent keys.
Also, the Logitech is backlit, which the Apple keyboard is not. There are backlight keys which allow you to set the lighting to medium, full or off as needed. If you’re someone who has a lot of meetings in dimly lit rooms with projectors, you know how important backlighting becomes in a hurry.
The case itself if very hefty. While the Apple case is extremely thin and attaches with magnets it doesn’t exactly instill confidence that it will protect the iPad. The Logitech is obviously much more protective, but also adds additional thickness and weight. With the case on my iPad is about the thickness of my MacBook Air and is even heavier. While it makes the iPad less portable it does provide much more protection and I don’t worry about it in my backpack as much.
This one attaches around the entire bottom and top two corners. I have an edge-to-edge screen protector on my iPad and the case does not interfere with it. Getting it in and out of the case is a little troublesome, but nothing too bad. I take the iPad out when I’m just reading. Logitech says you can fold the keyboard back for reading mode, but honestly it’s too thick and heavy for that. If your main use is using your iPad as a laptop replacement, this is perfect!
The keyboard is paired through Bluetooth and pairing was easy and worked the first time. When you put it into laptop mode the keyboard comes on automatically and is available immediately. There’s virtually no delay once it turns on. I also like the top row of special keys with a home button, media controls and volume controls.
There really aren’t many drawbacks, other than the weight. The ability to use it in more than one angle would be nice. Also, now that the iPad has the ability to use a mouse I wish it had a trackpad built in. Also, I’m concerned about how the finish will look after some time. It appears to be the same rubberized surface my Apple folio has, which has worn down and looks nasty. Even some tiny nubs on the bottom corners to lift it off the table would be nice.
IF you’re looking for a keyboard case and don’t mind the extra weight I would not hesitate to choose this one over the pricy Apple Keyboard Folio, as it’s actually more functional and easier to type on. However, if you want to keep your iPad svelte and light, you may not be perfectly satisfied. I do find the feel of the keyboard makes up for the weight though!

Another Great Nerf Blaster
on May 16, 2020
Posted by: Nerdninja
from Pennsylvania
We have a lot of Nerf blasters in our family (enough that we had to come up with a storage system!) and my son is a huge Fortnite fan, so this particular blaster was a perfect fit.
First off, I’m happy to see Nerf is making their packaging a little easier to deal with. This one didn’t have the multiple paper twist-ties they usually do, just a couple cardboard tabs to cut.
Inside are the gun, magazine and enough darts for two full loads. There are no batteries included, which you will need to operate the gun as it has a flywheel to launch the darts.
My son was quick to point out that the wrap isn’t exactly the same as in-game, but was “close enough” that he liked it a lot.
Accuracy and distance are really good, even better than some of the other blasters we have. Darts launch a good distance and hit their target with a satisfying “thunk!”
While it comes with about 20 color-matched darts, you can of course use other Nerf darts. There’s the usual door on the side to clear jams. So far we haven’t had any jams though.
Highly recommended for any Nerf or Fortnite fan!

Disappointing

If you're looking for some quiet background music while sitting around the patio table or fire pit, this may be of use. Unfortunately, the sound quality is nowhere near on-par with smaller portable speakers like the little soda-can sized Sony ones.
The overall design is very light-weight and a bit lackluster. The whole thing is a very light plastic, There's a power switch and charging port on the bottom. It charges through USB, and there's.a small channel on the bottom under which you can route the cable so you can use it plugged in. Successive presses of the power switch cycle colors and modes. Also included is a credit-card sized remote that allows more control over the light and modes. My favorite is the soothing amber color.
It does give off a nice soft light and is more for adding ambiance than lighting up a space.
While this is a nice grown-up alternative to some of the other lighted bluetooth speakers that are out there, I just couldn't help but be disappointed by the thin, hollow sound of the built in speaker.

Fun Blast from the Past
on May 1, 2020
Posted by: Nerdninja

I picked this up because I still have CDs. Tons of CDs, And I still like listening to them because they generally still sound better than compressed MP3s. Also, I like to troll second-hand stores for cheap CDs and sometimes I want to listen to them before I have a chance to rip them.
Enter the memorex portable CD player. Back in the day this thing would have been extremely expensive. Despite its low cost it feel well made and is not much bigger than a CD itself. It's light weight and takes batteries. Yess, you insert two batteries into this guy, No waiting for it to recharge. There's also a DC jack on the side but it takes a 4.5V coaxial plug. It would have been nice too put a 5V microUSB connection for power since everyone has tons of those adapters from their phones.
Sound quality is good, and it has no problem driving my various wired headphones, including my power-hungry Sennheisers. impressive!
Bluetooth pairing is a fun extra and brings this 90's technology into modern times. The complete lack of menus makes pairing a bit of a hassle, but once paired everything sounded fine on my Beoplay BT headphones.
It comes with the usual anti-skip technology higher-end portable CD players used to have, and a dynamic bass boost for people who are into extra bass.
The switches to turn on the bass boost and open the player are a little hard to see as they are black on black. Aside from that my only complaint is the lack of a digital-out jack. I would have loved to hook this up to one of my nice DACs and try it out that way, but admittedly that's a lot to ask for something inexpensive.
If you still have a bog CD collection (I know there are still lots of us out there!) I would definitely recommend this for use with your nice BT headphones and speakers.

Will this work with an iPhone 12Max with a Mous Limitless 3.0 case. Anyone foolish enough to use any gimble w/o some sort of protection is just asking for trouble IMO. I really want to pick one up but not if it won’t work with a case.

I don't know about that specific case, but the magnetic clip seems to work with every case I've thrown at it on my S21 Ultra.

That said, the clip and magnet are really strong and I would feel comfortable trusting them under most conditions

See more of the action with this Full HD ASUS gaming monitor. Quick 1 ms video response time lets you play action games in real time without lag. This ASUS gaming monitor comes with a stand for use on any flat surface.

I recently purchased this monitor from my local Bestbuy, and I cannot get audio through it. Does this monitor have built-in speakers? I am unable to find information online regarding whether this monitor has integrated speakers.

It does not have speakers. There is a headphone jack on the back you can connect to amplified speakers

Do I need to buy a pc box for this or dose it come with a built in pc or is it just a screen

This is just a monitor. It needs to be connected to a PC, either a desktop or a laptop (as a second screen)
