Great value for a high power zoom lens.

This is a great lens for the money. It is solid and well built. I purchased it along with a D7000 DSLR that came with a 18-105mm DX kit lens. It has a fast auto focus. Great for action and sports. A feature I like is that the lens can be manually focused when set in the auto focus mode (A / M). It is not necessary to switch between auto focus and manual focus mode. It also has a focus distance indicator, which you won't find on the comparable 55-300mm DX zoom lens.
It is an FX lense, so it is also compatible with the larger FX sensor format. If you think you will ever upgrade to a FX format DSLR format camera this lens will be able to follow you.
If fast auto focus is not important and you don't plan on ever upgrading to an FX format DSLR format camera the 55-300mm DX zoom lens is a good economical alternative choice. The 55-300mm DX is also a good choice if it will be your only lens or only zoom lens because of the wider 55mm focal length at the lower end. I'm glad I chose the 70-300mm lens. It's a great value and with the kit lens that came with the D7000 I have coverage from 18mm to 300mm in just two lenses.
What's great about it: Fast internal focus (IF)
What's not so great: Nothing yet.
I would recommend this to a friend!

I have a Nikon D5000. This lense fits on it? Is it my best choice for a long-range zoom lense for my camera?

The 70-300mm lens is a great choice if you need fast auto-focus (for action and / or sports). The 55-300mm lens is a good choice and more economical if auto-focus speed is not as important (shooting landscapes, portraits, still life, etc.).

Why would one buy the 70-300 VR when the 55-300 VR has very similar specs, a wider range, is lighter, and cheaper?

The 70-300mm zoom lens has better faster auto-focus technology. It is compatible with the larger FX format sensor. If you don't need fast auto focus and don't expect to ever upgrade to a much higher end FX format camera the 55-300mm would be a good choice.

I have a Nikon D3000 and I am looking for another lens, my son plays sports so I am looking for more close up shots. What would you recommend?

The 55-300mm zoom lens would be a good economical choice. However the 70-300mm lens is better for sports due to its fast auto focus.
