The right size and price for what you get

This was an upgrade to my late 2010 MacBook Air and I'm very happy! Originally interested in a new MacBook, I couldn't justify the higher price for what I use it for ($1,149 versus $1,599). Make no mistake, this isn't a a cheap PC laptop filled with bloat ware and an oversized form factor, but an extremely portable, very capable laptop. If you frequently use more powerful software for video/photo editing, you should probably be looking at the more powerful MacBook Pro.

The Air has a larger screen and form factor compared to the MacBook (13.3" versus 12") and weighs slightly more but still under 3 pounds. Side by side, you can feel the less than 1 pound difference, but overall it's negligible. Performance wise, they're essentially the same despite the MacBook having a newer processor chipset. The choice essentially came down to preferring the Air's MagSafe charging connector, standard USB3 ports, SD card slot and Thuderbolt port over the MacBook's single USB-C port.

The MagSafe charger on the Air is magnetized and designed to pull away from the computer if it comes into contact with anything versus the MacBook's USB-C, which is inserted into the computer's charging port. If the USB-C connector breaks off, you're potentially looking at replacing the motherboard. The standard USB3 ports on the Air can be used with any USB accessories, including charging or wired tethering of my phone. For the MacBook, you need to buy a dongle to attach ANY wired accessory and a different dongle for USB, HDMI and display. The Air also has a longer battery life and better FaceTime camera (my daughter just left for college and I'm now using FaceTime daily). The MacBook does have the better Retina display and larger 512GB hard drive (versus the Air's 256GB) but I couldn't justify the price difference for the reasons listed above.
