Simple passive device does its job
on September 17, 2020

I got this to feel confident about serving drinking water from my kitchen faucet and also to improve the quality of my coffee. This filter does the job. It was pretty simple and straight-forward to install, and I like how easy it is to replace the filter.
The installation instructions advise you to place the filter mount to leave some clearance to allow for replacement -- it would have been a little better if the instructions gave you a recommended measurement from the filter mount instead of from the bottom of the filter to make it a bit easier to install the mount with the filter detached.
The filter did affect the water pressure coming out of the faucet -- I get about half the flow now, but it's a reasonable trade-off for the quality of water you get.

Bringing back the flip phone with a vengeance!
on September 15, 2020
Posted by: Snarltoof
from Minneapolis, MN
Overall I'm enjoying this phone-slash-tiny-laptop. It's got some unique capabilities and it's pretty fun to use. In spite of the size, when folded it isn't really much larger than my previous phone and it fits very nicely in men's pants pockets.
It's on Android 10. It has only the most basic apps installed, plus a few Microsoft and Google apps. I decided to set it up as new rather than transfer my settings over from my existing phone, so I had to install a bunch of applications. It is kind of nice that it doesn't come loaded with OEM junk. It starts with the Edge browser. I installed Chrome because that's what I've been using on my android phones, but Chrome was crashing and locking up particularly when logging into commerce sites. The edge browser is pretty good. I prefer how Chrome handles multiple tabs.
Using the gestures does take some getting used to. I already went through that when migrating from Android 9 to Android 10, but the dual screens gives it a whole new level. Some of the gestures are mirrored. I find myself accidentally backing out of stuff when I try to tap controls in some apps. With a certain amount of finesse you can do the right gesture, like the difference between flipping pages in an ebook or minimizing the app.
When ebooks work right, they are incredible. It's awesome to be able to read a novel in book mode with one page on the left and another on the right, just like a real book. Spanning the ebook across both screens is super fussy and takes some practice, but it's worth it. Unfortunately, not all books seem to work that way.
There's a generous amount of space on the screen, and it's viable for working on docs and spreadsheets. It's cool to be able to use the two sides as dual monitors, with different apps running side by side, like using OneNote to take notes while browsing web pages. It comes with a few sample side-by-side combos called "groups" set up for you, where you hit one shortcut to open two apps side by side, so there's some cool potential there.
The performance is a little bit wonky. Sometimes the home screen glitches -- icons become unresponsive, background image disappears, stuff like that. It's pretty rare, and I hope it gets fixed over time. I had high hopes when installing games on it, but I found that the touch is a tiny bit laggy, so it's really hard to play Zen Pinball on it. It's really hard to get the timing right on the flippers.
Using it as a phone -- well, I'll have to get used to that. Answering a phone when it's folded isn't awesome. Are you supposed to carry it folded with the screen sides out? The first time the phone rang, I panicked and couldn't figure out where the mic or the speaker were! Now I usually use bluetooth headphones and it works great.
The camera isn't awesome. It reminds me of phone cameras from like 5 years ago in terms of speed, sharpness, and picture quality. There's only one camera, so you have to think before you can switch between normal and selfie.
I had a problem with text messages -- it could send texts but it couldn't receive them. I had to contact Verizon tech support, and they were able to fix it on their side. The tech said they reset the text messages -- I don't know what that means, but the messages started coming in right away while I was on with the agent.
I like this phone and I'm really happy I have it. I feel like an early adopter, so I expect to deal with some wonkiness as it matures.
Note -- I received this phone from Best Buy as part of the Tech Insider Network Program for the purpose of writing an honest, unbiased review. I did not buy it.

Impressive sound
on September 8, 2020
Posted by: Snarltoof

I've used several different earbuds at different price levels, and these blew me away. The clarity of the sound is at a whole different level -- when I used the equalizer features of the app, I realized that I'm not tuning them to filter out the most distorted version of sound, but I'm adjusting them to personal preference. Listening to the same song over the whole range of equalizer settings, at full volume, I just couldn't get distorted sound. The bass is clean with some amount of thump, the midrange is clear and I can pick out individual instruments, and the treble isn't grating, scratchy, or otherwise offensive. After listening to a few hours of a spectrum of different music styles, I found that these earbuds were consistently great.
I can use the right earbud by itself for web conferencing, and the noise reduction behaved pretty well.
The earbuds come with several different ear plug sizes, so be sure to experiment. I went with the large ones, and the difference from the medium ones was dramatic.
Get these. They are really good.

Good, solid, reliable
on September 8, 2020
Posted by: Snarltoof

This is a solid build and I comes with a pretty strong brand name for reliability. I like the compact design and the soft edges. The plug blades fold down so you can throw it in your bag without worrying about it. The plug is not polarized, so it plays reasonably well with other plug-in adapters; you can rotate it if you have to share an outlet with another adapter that takes up more than one plug space.
Performance-wise, it is okay. It can indeed charge my iPhone and my Pixel at the same time, but at normal or somewhat faster speed, but it doesn't register as quick-charging. Unfortunately, it can't charge any of my tablets or laptops. It doesn't give an error, it just doesn't register as charging. I guess that's a good thing -- rather than horribly slow charging or a fire hazard, you get nothing. However, I'd rather have something more versatile in my bag.
Recommended for phone charging if reliability is a primary concern.

Good system, great video
on August 17, 2020
Posted by: Snarltoof

This is a wired system, so be prepared to run cables! But it's really worth it.
The system includes generously-long signal/power combination cables, so you can keep all the power centralized, and the kit comes with a handy power cord splitter.
The camera itself is about the shape and size of a half of a soda can, so it is a bit conspicuous. You'll have to be creative if you want it to be stealthy.
The camera housing is a pretty solid plastic. It allows angle and rotation adjustment without tools. It isn't for a highly secure location -- the mounting screws are exposed, but at least it runs the cord through the mount so the wire isn't too easy to cut. However, a pair of pruning shears or a PVC pipe cutter could easily chop the camera from the mount.
The picture quality is great. It really picks up colors even in low-light, and you can zoom in on images for pretty good detail. However -- with all 4 cameras installed at the default settings, the 1TB drive filled up for me after about a week.
The app and the console are both pretty straight-forward to use, however NightOwl uses several different apps for its different products, and this one, NightOwl Protect, cannot be added to Google Home at this point. That lack of integration and convenience cost it a star in my review rating.
If you don't care about adding it to Google Home, this is a fantastic system and a great value for the money.

High quality, easy setup
on August 14, 2020
Posted by: Snarltoof

It's a simple little thing to set up, physically. It's powered by a micro USB port and comes with an adapter and cable, so it's really easy to get power to it. I've even been able to use a usb battery pack for it. The base is magnetic! And it comes with a steel plate you can attach to any surface to give it a good mounting point, or you can stick it to your refrigerator, file cabinet, etc.
Besides the easy installation, I like the super wide angle lens. It covers my entire livingroom pretty well. I also like the picture quality, even in low light. The app is easy to use and does a great job marking activity for easy playback. It uses a micro SD card for onboard memory, so you don't have to sign up for a service to be able to scan your history. Of course, it does require an app and a Lorex login. I'm getting a bit fatigued by having so many different logins for so many different devices.
Overall, this is a solid device, does what it's supposed to do, and doesn't need a paid account to access your stuff.

Serious ice production appliance
on July 20, 2020
Posted by: Snarltoof
from Minneapolis, MN
I love this. The description says it makes "fluffy" ice, or something like that, and they're right to point out the unique quality and texture of the ice cubes. They're pellet-sized, they break apart easily if they get stuck together, and they do a great job cooling down drinks quickly. And they work great for making smoothies in a blender. So -- get this just for the special ice cubes!
Otherwise, it was pretty easy to set up, but it is a serious piece of equipment so you have to sanitize it first. It goes through the instructions on how to do that, but be sure you have an hour or two before you first need to use the machine to run bleach through it then rinse it out. The side tank is very convenient for filling the ice maker, so it's a welcome addition. Once you it going, you'll have plenty of ice within an hour. It's also nice how insulated the container is, so the ice stays good for a while. Of course, when the ice melts off, it just makes the melt-off into more ice cubes. That's when the cubes would be stuck together -- there's nothing to refrigerate the ice bin, so it does melt over time, but it will just make new ice on top of the old ice, and it sticks together in a giant clump. You can break up the clump by stabbing it with the scooper, so it's not that big a deal.
Now the annoying stuff -- it has wifi IoT capability, but the instructions are all messed up -- the printed instructions point you to the wrong app (Android) and that app just won't connect. The help instructions for that wrong app point you to another wrong app. I had to get help from tech support -- they pointed me to the correct app, "SmartHQ." That app works, but it is a bit cumbersome to set up, and you have to create yet another login account for their service. As annoying as that was, it doesn't outweigh the awesomeness of the machine, and I hope they'll clean up their instructions.

Nice sound, easy to use
on July 14, 2020
Posted by: Snarltoof

Super easy to set up and use, if you're used to selecting sound devices in your computer's settings. You pretty much just have to hit the drop-down menu and select it. The instructions tell you to use it for sound playback as well, but that doesn't make any sense to me. It does have a headphone jack, so maybe that's what it's for.
It's pretty cool that you can select the mic sound pattern-- omni, cardioid, stereo, and front and back, like recording a conversation with someone across the table from you. I didn't spend a lot of time testing the spacial sound features, but my friends can hear me just fine on video conferences and shouting at eachother during games. The cardioid setting does a pretty good job of reducing sound in the background.
The only thing that bugs me about it is the control markings. The dark print on black is really hard to see, and the position indicator on the knob is invisible, especially with my computer monitors backlighting it. I guess it was designed to be used in a bright conference room? Anyway, see my picture and try to make out the marking on the big knob, and that pic is in the daylight, not in a dark room while gaming. I colored in the position indicator with a white marker after I took that picture so I'm all good...
Overall, a great all-around mic with really nice build quality.

Convenient sound on a whole new level
on June 22, 2020
Posted by: Snarltoof

I've had home theater systems in the past with a component amp and speakers that I had to wire. When I needed something simpler, I went for a soundbar system with a subwoofer. The sound quality and spatial positioning weren't as great, but the convenience made up for it. Now I got this beast.
The setup was very easy. I just had to plug it in; I already had an optical cable in place, so the only real setup I had to do was reprogram my TV remote. Otherwise, the remote that comes with the unit has all the controls you really need. The subwoofer connected itself, I didn't have to do anything but plug in the power.
Once I had it hooked up, the first thing I did for a test was play Star Wars ("first" movie, episode 4, A New Hope) to see how it handled the opening scene. I put the wireless back speakers in the corners behind me, cranked up the sound, and sat comfortably. The opening score sounded bright and rich and filled the room. So far so good! Then the imperial cruiser boarded the rebel ship. OMG. That bass shook the whole house. The sub-audio rumbling was like being there, or at least like being in a theater. The movie was compatible with Dolby Atmos, so it did a great job of positioning the sound.
I also streamed music from my phone over bluetooth, and it just worked. Again, the sound was awesome.
Overall, I really enjoy this system. It is easy to set up and super convenient without having to worry about wires.

Comfortable, light weight, great battery life
on May 13, 2020
Posted by: Snarltoof
from Minneapolis, MN
Right out of the box, these look and feel like something extra special. The overall look and feel of these is beautiful, the earbuds and the case are very stylish and elegant.
It comes with several different ear plugs, so take the time to find the one that feels and sounds best -- I find that the sound quality is only as good as the fit in your ear. I chose to go with the squishy ear plugs because they are comfortable and expand into my ear like hearing-protection earplugs, and that helped bring out the lower frequencies.
The pair comes with an app that lets you fine chose from a few different sound setting presets, and there's a circle thing you can use to fine tune the sound to your preference. You can also choose how much background sound you want it to let through or block off. When I'm out walking the dog and listening to music loudly, this setting allows me to hear cars drive by.
They are comfortable enough for me to wear for a few hours at a time, and the battery life is good. I've had them for a week, and I only charged the base once.
The tap controls are pretty easy to get used to, and it responds to the presses and taps pretty reliably.
The sound quality is nice. Very clear highs and midrange. The bass drops off, so there's not a whole lot of thump, but it doesn't sound like it's coming through a tin can either.
The quality really comes through on phone calls. I can hear very well on conference calls, and they say I sound loud and clear. It's very handy to be able to use Google Assistant through it, although I can't figure out how to allow these to unlock the phone, like most of my other Bluetooth stuff can.
Overall, they're good quality, good sound, great features.

They got it right!
By Snarltoof from Minneapolis, MN
I've been using tablets for years, including my first Galaxy Tab 7" tablet, a variety of Acer and Asus tablets, a Surface, and Surface Book. I've also been a fan of the Samsung Galaxy phones, having a 3, 4, and a 5.
When I first got this S3 tablet, I was expecting to get decent tablet performance. What I got was a powerhouse in an elegant, extremely light weight package. The size is great -- it's way more portable than my Surface devices, and the type cover gives it a good amount of protection.
Great job on the type cover, guys! The magnet attachment and the tilted viewing angle are great. It would be awesome if the type cover had a hole for the rear camera. A couple of other minor keyboard quirks; the tablet only accepts the keyboard if the tablet is unlocked when you attach it. I was also hoping for an android button on the type cover but couldn't find it at first. I read the instructions (under settings/physical keyboard/keyboard shortcuts) and it shows a "super" button that supports all the commands I'd want to use for an Android keyboard. After hunting around, I figured out that the "search" button on the keyboard, with the magnifying glass icon, is this "super" button. Now my hands don't need to leave the keyboard. The keys are a fairly natural size, not too cramped for my very large hands, They didn't bother making a touchpad on the keyboard like you see on some other compact keyboards. Good move!
I'm going to experiment with USB C video adapters to see how it performs as a "desktop" replacement, but I'm really optimistic given how it performs normally. I have a USB C to USB 3 adapter, and it picks up my keyboard and mouse just fine, even through a KVM.
I've been using a Google Pixel phone for a while, so I lost practice with how Samsung does stuff, so it's a bit different to navigate. Not too bad, and this thing does way more and has way more features than I've explored so far.
It connected to my Wi-Fi network easily, has great web page load times, installs apps quickly, and Zen Pinball is super responsive on this.
It feels really light, so it is very easy to hold. It does great as a Kindle reader, although the screen is a bit shiny. They keyboard/case pops off easily but holds securely when it's attached either as a case or as a keyboard.
I was really excited to try it out, so I used it for two days before charging it. I let it run down to 15%, and it was still happily playing pinball. It supports quick charging, so it was back up to 40% in about 15 minutes.
It's pricey, but you get what you pay for. It's an awesome tablet.

I've been using this tablet for a month now. Still five stars. The performance is fantastic, the battery capacity is awesome, the tablet is lightweight and easy to handle, and the keyboard case pops on and off really conveniently. It is awesome that it comes with the pen.
If Samsung is out there reading this -- you gotta come up with a dock or keyboard/mouse/video/Ethernet adapter for it! This thing is a powerhouse, and if I could use it with a fullsize keyboard and monitor it would be a viable laptop replacement. I've been scouring the internet and I can't find anything that displays video while providing power to the tablet.

Do you experience dropped calls, slow internet speeds, or the inability to send and receive texts while you’re on the road or enjoying some time off the beaten path? With the weBoost Drive Reach RV, you can improve your cell signal, wherever your adventures take you. Designed to enhance signal coverage for RVs, campers and trailers, especially in remote areas. The weBoost Drive Reach RV Cellular Signal Booster uses the latest technology to pick up an existing cell signal, route it the booster, then broadcast that amplified signal into your RV. To install the Drive Reach RV, first select where to mount the outside antenna using the provided ladder bracket. This is the most important step as it impacts the overall performance of the booster. Check that the antenna is at least 12 inches from all other antennas and openings to avoid interference. Use the modular mast extensions to ensure the antenna is above any obstructions. Once the outside antenna is installed, run the coax cable behind the weather stripping of an opening, like a door, window, or pop out slide, into your RV. Next, place the inside antenna on a table or countertop near where you plan to use your devices the most. Then run the coax cables to the booster. Plugin both the outside and inside cables. Now, plug in the power cord to the booster. Finally, plug the power cord into your vehicle’s power supply and turn on the booster. When the green light is on, it’s working. All coax cable needed for installation is provided. Stay connected, wherever you choose to explore, with the weBoost Drive Reach RV Cellular Signal Booster!

The power requirements says “plug in”. Plug into what? Does this plug into 120v AC which would require shore power or an inverter or does it plug into 12v DC in an RV? If I t’s 12V what kind of plug?

It comes with an AC power adapter, so you need shore power, inverter, or generator. I bought the 12V adapter for it, which plugs into a lighter socket.

What is the maximum output through the USB cable. Example if I use a hub can I get 1gb Ethernet and two 4k screens @ 60hz plus a keyboard, mouse, and USB 3.0 at regular speeds? Also is there going to be a Samsung DeX or Chromebook OS from MS?

Ethernet, keyboard, and mouse work through the USB C cable, but video does not, so you won't get anything on your monitors.

Is data transferred or synched from my PC to the Duo via the YourPhone app on my PC? If not, how?

It's compatible with cloud syncing on Google Drive, gmail, hotmail, and OneDrive, so you get your data, pics, contacts, calendars, etc. It's also compatible with the YourPhone app so you can resume your browsing session and use text messaging on your PC.

Does the phone give you the option to turn off a display when not in use to conserve battery?

When you have it open like a book, both displays are on. When you have it folded shut, both displays are off. When you have it folded in the open position with both screens on the outside, only one screen stays on. You double-tap to switch screens, but it also seems to respond to how I rotate my wrist. There's only one camera so you have to rotate it between selfie and normal modes.

Do I need a smart phone to be able to use Norton Core?

I'm pretty sure you do; you need the app to set it up and control it. I'm not sure if there's a web interface, but I don't think there is.
