My favorite appliance

I love my stand mixer. I got it for Christmas after my other mixer finally gave up the ghost. I use it every week to make bread. But I also use it to make just about anything else I want. I have several attachments: 1) grain mill; 2) Food grinder & strainer; and 3) rotor slicer/shredder. I use all of the attachments on a regular basis.
The food grinder & strainer is perfect when I want to make my family homemade spaghetti sauce using the tomatoes and herbs from our garden or my popular (at least with my family) homemade tomato soup. The grain mill is perfect to grind the grains for the flour I use in my bread, cookies, and pastries. And the slicer/shredder cuts up the vegetables I use in salads, stews, etc., as well as shredding the cheese we eat so much of.
Everything is easy to clean.
This mixer is one of the few appliances I'm willing to even have in my kitchen--I have no microwave or dishwasher or blender, but the mixer has a place of honor.
There are a couple of problems with it: 1) I dislike anything (except canisters and cookie jar) on the counter. I don't even own a drain rack for my dishes, but rather use old towels that can then be tossed into the washer. But, the mixer is too heavy to put away and pull back out again. I'm thinking that making it lighter would not be a good idea as I think the bulk and weight add to it's stability and efficiency, but if it's possible, a lighter mixer would be nice; and 2) It's a little noisy. It's not something you use in the quiet of the night or if you want some peace and quiet at anytime of the day.
Despite the two drawbacks I mentioned above, I love it and wouldn't trade it for any other brand or mixer, unless of course Kitchen Aid can come out with one as sturdy and efficient as this one and yet be lighter and quieter.
What's great about it: All it can do
What's not so great: Too heavy to move easily and a little noisy
I would recommend this to a friend!

Powerful little machine

I bought this vacuum cleaner because my old vacuum (about 6 years old) just wouldn't do the job anymore.
One of the problems I have is that my hair is very long and very thick. That creates problems for the roller so I'm constantly having to clean it. But, now, even though I keep the roller free of my hair, it just doesn't have any sucking power left.
For several months I'd noticed that I just wasn't getting a good cleaning.
Finally, after having the ceiling fan in the master bedroom replaced today, and trying to vacuum up the mess, I became so frustrated, I drove to Best Buy and decided to buy this vacuum (I had spent about an hour reading reviews and checking features on all the vacuums before I made my decision).
I got the vacuum home and found that it was easy to put together (less than 5 minutes) and very, very light to maneuver.
Then, I vacuumed the entire house. I had to dump the dirt catcher 3 times! It just goes to show just how bad the other vacuum had become. Of course, all brand new vacuums work this well. The real test will be time. I'll update this after I've had it and used it for a few months.
By the way, I have two issues with it: 1) the attachment doesn't stay on; and 2) I haven't been able to get the rollers to adjust for the thickness of the carpet.
What's great about it: power suction
What's not so great: can't figure out how to raise or lower the rollers depending on carpet thickness

This winner of 11 Academy Awards is presented in widescreen anamorphic with an uncommon but well-suited aspect ratio of 2.76:1. Given its lengthy running time, the film has been divided onto two sides of a single disc with the flip occurring (thankfully) during the "Intermission" break. The transfer itself has few flaws, but the actual print shows countless signs of age, including color loss and grain. The audio is in English (Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround) and French (Dolby Digital 2.0) with English, French, Spanish and Portuguese subtitles. Special features include a "Cast and Crew" section that is a mere film credit listing (no bios). An audio commentary track is provided by Charlton Heston and, though repetitive, it is an invaluable source of great stories and his own unique viewpoints. The track does not cover the entire length of the film, so the disc has a special, built-in "fast forward" feature which links the commentary sections together. Unfortunately, the language subtitle feature cannot be deployed during the commentary. Side B of the disc features additional extras, including an hour-long documentary entitled "Ben-Hur: The Making of an Epic." This excellent piece examines the entire history of Ben-Hur, from the initial novel to early theatrical productions and up to the film adaptations. Side B also includes a seven-minute "Screen Test" section which features actors Leslie Nelson and Cesare Danova in the roles of Ben-Hur and Messala, as well as a one-minute silent film of actress Haya Harareet that looks to be a makeup and wardrobe test. Rounding out the special features is a rather barren photo gallery with ten stills and illustrations, plus a theatrical teaser and trailer and an awards list. This disc does not match its subject's epic stature, but it's worthwhile viewing nonetheless.

Another favorite

Another of my favorites. I have about 5 favorite, early Christian movies. All were on tape and I now have 3 on DVD. Good thing as I tend to watch them over and over.
Young people today would do well to watch this classic. What a great way to see a story of Early Christians who had to suffer much at the hands of Ancient Rome. The arrogance of the Romans is quite profound. The fear of disease (in this case, leprosy), the abuse by the conquerers, yet the honor some of those same conquerers showed a Jew after he saves the life of an admiral is quite a contrast. The action of the chariot race, and the brutality the losers suffered when they couldn't get out of the way in time is horrifying. Even when Messala cheats by having iron blades installed on his chariot's wheels in order to destroy his opponents in the circus seems perfectly acceptable. What a different time and place!
For those of you who must have some romance--it's there.
For those of you who must have smut and filth, you'll be disappointed. This film is art, not trash.
What's great about it: Everything
What's not so great: Had to order it since it wasn't available in the stores

My Very Favorite movie ever is even better on DVD

This is my all-time favorite move. I have owned four video tapes and have worn them all out. Now, I can watch Quo Vadis as much as I want.
I love the story line of love and sacrifice in the early years of Christianity. I have read the book and while the book is definately better, the movie is pretty good. Robert Taylor wasn't really a good actor, but he does play a great Roman soldier.
Peter Ustinov as Nero is just as I have always pictured Nero being--arrogant, selfish, completely self-absorbed. The early Christians going to their deaths singing is both sad and beautiful at the same time.
The huge Classical Roman sets are amazing. I've been to Rome, Pompeii, etc., and I can really feel as if I'm there, in the midst of it all.
In short, the extravagant sets, the thousands of actors, the stirring music and action really brings ancient Rome and 1st Century Christianity alive for me.

What's not so great: Not available in the store so I had to order it

George Stevens' epic-scale retelling of the life of Jesus Christ gets a simple but caring release in this edition. The Greatest Story Ever Told, which appears on this DVD in its original 199-minute version, has been given a letterboxed transfer to disc in the widescreen aspect ratio of 2.75:1 and is also enhanced for anamorphic playback on 16 x 9 monitors. Both the original English-language soundtrack and a dubbed French version have been remixed for playback in Dolby Digital 5.1; an English track in Dolby Digital Stereo is also included. Optional subtitles in French and Spanish also appear. No additional bonus materials appear on this release; a Special Edition disc with extras is also available.

A great movie is made even greated on DVD

This is one of my favorite movies. I have it on video and have watched it so many times that the tape was becoming worn through. When I received a Best Buy gift certificate for Christmas, I promptly ordered three of my favorite movies ever. This was one of them.
I love this film. The many, many famous actors, the setting, the narration, the chilling portrayal of the devil, the thrilling use of Handel's Hallelujah Chorus... The list goes on.
The only down side is, is that the DVD seemed a little grainy to me. But, I quickly forgot about that as I became more and more absorbed into the movie. I'll be watching it again and again.
What's great about it: Being able to watch an old favorite
What's not so great: quality is a little grainy
