Great sound for size and price

Upon returning from a vacation, I realized that I would get a lot of use out of a Blue Tooth speaker to pair with my Android phone and tablet. I looked at all of the main options. The final considerations were the Bose Sound link, JBL Charge and Flip 2, Jambox, and a couple different Ultimate Ears models. I thought I had narrowed it all down to the two JBL models but saw an ad for the Monster Superstar just minutes before making the final decision. I have two sets of Monster headphones (DNA on ear and N-Ergy ear buds) which I have grown to prefer over my Bose IE2 and Bose AE2 and decided to check their speaker out. It was difficult to find a store that carried it. The main Best Buy stores did not stock it but a couple of the small mobile stores in the malls had it. I bought it today and I'm very impressed with the Monster brand again.
The speaker feels well made. It's solid and the rubber housing around it feels like it would limit damage. I wouldn't test it intentionally but I won't worry about putting it in a backpack to head to a beach or pool. It seems to give about 5 hours per charge as claimed and it pairs very easily to my devices. I listened to it using an auxiliary cable and didn't hear a difference between the cord and the Blue Tooth. It also charges using mini USB which is great because I can charge it with my travel USB charging pack and it uses the same cord type as my other devices making it better for travel. The padded pouch/case it comes with is also a nice feature. I got to test the microphone/conference call feature while writing this and it worked better than expected. I could hear the caller very clearly and they had no trouble hearing me which is pretty much all I wanted. The range seemed decent. When I answered the call, the speaker was across the room and I retrieved it to set it on an end table closer to me for the call but there were no points where either of us had to ask what the other said.
From here on out, this is of course my review of how it sounds to my ears. Some people don't hear things as others so it really is opinion. For me, the sound is excellent. While it is not going to compare to a multi speakered regular hi-fi system, it is definitely in the top tier sound wise for Blue Tooth speakers and it blows the others in its price range away. The mids and highs are very clear and defined. Vocals sound great. The bass isn't pounding but I don't know how anyone could get really thumping bass out of a speaker that size. I would say the bass is stronger than several other speakers I considered that were significantly larger. I listen mainly to classic rock and it exceeded my expectations. It is loud enough to get you thrown out of a hotel. When placed on the fireplace mantle in my living room around eye level, it fills the room with undistorted sound at all levels. It also works great watching videos. Dialogue is very clear and the speaker makes it much more enjoyable than just getting sound through the device.
I only wish it had an actual battery meter to show how much charge it has left. It has a red LED that blinks when the power is running low and also indicates when it is charging but I would prefer a little more. Even just four lights that count down would be better. So far, that's the only thing I wish was different.
Overall, I'm very pleased with the product. The Bose Sound Link might sound a little better but I didn't think the difference was significant nor worth the extra price and I'm not a Bose hater. However, that was just my opinion. The size, sound, and price made this the best choice for what I was looking for which was something with the best sound that didn't break the bank and would be convenient for travel. Definitely check this one out if you're looking for something similar.
What's great about it: Very solid, clear sound at all volumes. Mids and highs are really crisp and vocals are very clean.
What's not so great: Bass a little light which makes some rap and hip hop sound a little weak. Also wish it had a real battery meter.
I would recommend this to a friend!
