Perfect coffee and tea brewing made easy
on October 14, 2018
Posted by: mkcar1

This is an excellent unit, well thought out - in what is becoming a very crowded field of options.
Plug it in and set the clock and you are pretty much ready to go.
Hardware;
A large water reservoir with large area to pour water in makes filling easy. But markings are on the side making it a tad difficult to see the fill markings. However, it does have a large “max” indicator which is easily seen from the top. You can always pop off the basket to fill.
Big plus is separate coffee and tea brewing baskets so you don’t get cross taste contamination. Machine automatically senses which basket you are using and shows appropriate options. Also remembers which options you used last for each. This makes it very easy to change between coffee or tea brewing. Swing open the brew basket, set in the coffee or tea basket – close and ready to brew!
Easy to operate using the 2 control dials. 1 for cup size and other to start/select and set strength and/or type of tea (herbal, black, oolong, white, green). Display is all digital with large easy to use/read cup size and strength indicators for coffee and tea brewing
The carafe itself is heavily insulated and kept my wife’s coffee hot for over an hour. Also has a wide opening at top so when hand washing (not dishwasher safe) I was able to get my hand in to wash the inside easily. Not always the case with other carafes.
One interesting difference from all coffee brewers I have used in the past is there is no hot plate to keep your coffee/tea hot if using carafe. This is a nice option as you don’t have to worry about your kids (or yourself) burning themselves.
Not sure how it does cold brew so quickly but it seems to use suction?
We didn’t try the frother….
Coffee brewing;
You can use provided mesh filter or paper filters if you like – your choice. We always use the mesh filter.
This is a nice step up from the Ninja CF021 coffee maker we were using. Just select your cup size, brew strength, press start and wait for it to finish brewing.
Whether hot or cold brewing my wife found the coffee to always be smooth and delicious.
Tea brewing;
I drink tea not coffee so was really interested in how this unit would do brewing tea. One-word answer is “excellent”. So no more using the microwave for me….
I used higher end black and green loose-leaf tea and bags. ALL came out excellent whether using classic, rich, over ice or cold brew.
No real downsides other than it is couple of inches taller than any coffee maker we have had before. So check your counter to cabinet height…

Unfulfilled promises

Unfulfilled promises
This could be a great unit but needs more refinement so it will do what it states it can do. I do recommend this but only as I feel confident the issues will be corrected by Neato with software/firmware updates.
What it does well;
Easily unpacked.
Is nicely designed with sturdy components
When cleaning only 1 room at a time it works well;
Maps well with details and sq. ft. indicated after run
It cleans very thoroughly due to its “structured” and not random vacuuming pattern. If you are cleaning a carpeted area you will see the pattern and its misses nothing.
Very Fast as it normally doesn’t waste time going over the same area
Stops itself when it has completely cleaned the room.
Easy to setup app/account. Liked its security - Neato sends you a verification code to finish setup.
Pretty quiet in “eco” mode and ran 99 minutes with very good suction/cleaning.
Did not get “stuck” on several throw rugs of varying heights.
Due to straight “nose” can get into corners and right against wall/molding.
Large beater bar and relatively large dust bin.
Very large contact points on robot/charging station making it easy to get a connection when recharging.
Built in carrying handle
Issues (for me);
Initially had issue trying to getting wireless setup. Would not connect while robot was docked. As soon as I moved it off – it connected.
After several attempts I could not get it to complete a whole home floor plan. I own a 3200 sq.ft. 1 level house with pretty open floor plan. Over several attempts the most it would map was around 1600 sq. ft. – with it appearing to go over previous “mapped” areas multiple times rather than do entire house. I had everything picked up off of the floor with only chairs/furniture to maneuver around (I have used robots before). I was thinking of creating 2 floor plans but to do that you have to start robot from the dock – and since I cannot control where it goes this proved undoable.
Could not test the no go lines as they only work with a home floor plan and I never could get one created.
Never “docked” itself during a run to recharge so it also never “re-started” cleaning from where it had stopped prior to recharging.
No dock button on robot itself – only start/stop.
Docking option within the app is grayed out at times when cleaning. Could not determine conditions that causes this. This is an issue since I wound up doing 1 room at a time with me carrying robot to/from charger and with no docking button on robot and app having grayed out “dock” button, I had no option but to dock it myself.
Cannot go between “eco” and “turbo” mode if robot running. You have to pause the cleaning then restart.
Boundary marker is nice and thick and magnetic. But I am not sure how a magnet helps since I don’t have any metal in my floors, so only its weight keeps it secured. As such IF the robot encounters it head-on it will reverse but then tries to go around it using a sideways motion. This motion just moved the marker out of the way on any hard surface.
The top of the dustbin gets really dusty when emptying making robot always appear dirty.
Filter does a great job of filtering debris but this makes it hard to “clean” Its folds hold the dirt so have to “beat” it against side of garbage can – sending dust flying I didn’t want to breath and getting my hands dirty.
No running time for how long robot has been cleaning. Time is shown only upon completion of run as is the map and sq. ft.
Received a “clear my path” message on the app while running. I selected “press here for more info” and it took me to a non-existent page. As such could find no way to restart the robot using the app. Had to physically press the start button.
It cleans well but does not fulfill advertised promises that in my opinion make it less than it could/should be.

Great entry level SSD upgrade
on September 6, 2018

Your expectations and price point will be crucial if considering purchasing this drive. If you are looking to upgrade to something that will boot Windows faster, speed up your day to day processing tasks, extend battery life of a laptop and not have to worry about any moving disk platters – this is a worthy product and I would recommend it. But for gaming or applications needing intensive read/write functions be aware there are faster drives with newer technology.
3 year warranty...
To give you an idea of what this drive can do for older machine in particular…
I have an older Sony VAIO laptop with;
Intel Core i5 (2nd Gen) 2410M / 2.3 GHz processor
8GB 1333 MHz DDR3 SDRAM
And 500GB Seagate ST95005620AS 7200RPM hybrid hard drive. I am attaching its not to impressive CrystalDiskMark score.
It takes about 20 seconds to boot Windows 10 with very few startup programs, which for its time was pretty fast.
I replaced the hard drive with the WD and boot time is now less than 10 seconds and its CrystalDiskMark score is radically faster as you can see. Also it is being limited as laptop only has SATAII connection.
Money well spent if looking for more of an entry level SSD.

All in one color laser that hits the mark
on August 18, 2018
Posted by: mkcar1
from Scottsdale, Az
I have become increasing frustrated with ink jet printers over the last few years due to terrible build quality and/or software and of course the cost of the ink. It seemed I was constantly re-installing the software as the printer would not activate after going “off line”, or wasting ink needing to “clean” the heads as they had dried since last printing. As such I had been considering a color laser printer for a couple of years and jumped at the chance to review this one.
This printer checked all of the boxes I was looking for;
Grayscale printing - (2400 dpi (fine) – 600 x 600 dpi (normal)
Color Printing – (2400 dpi (fine), 600 x 600 dpi (normal)
Automated duplex printing
Scanner – 19200 x 19200 dpi interpolated 1200 x 2400 dpi (scanner glass)
600 x 600 dpi (from adf)
Copier – 600x 600 dpi
Fax – I didn’t use this function
2 trays (tray 1 (for everyday printing, normally 8 x 11 paper) and MP (multi purpose – 4 x 6 photo, other page sizes, etc.))
Wireless/ethernet/usb connections. Be advised it does NOT include a USB cable though.
Given its speed, options and not having to deal with the frustrations of an inkjet I feel this unit is well worth the cost for personal home use and certainly excellent for home businesses.
In the box are;
Instructions (basic)
Power cord about 5 feet. It has NO cumbersome brick, but is not low profile where it plugs into printer (not 90 degree).
4 toner cartridges (black, cyan, magenta and yellow
Telephone line cord
Total dimensions 16.1” width, 16.3” height, 20” depth and weight of about 53 lbs. As such I wasn’t able to use in same space as prior inkjet printer. You really need to be able to easily access the back of the printer so I wound up getting a metal shelving unit with wheels from home depot to place it on.
Positives;
I would suggest going to Brothers website and downloading 675 page documentation as there is a LOT this printer can do and has many adjustments which in no way is touched upon in provided basic documentation.
Was easily unpacked but at 50 lbs I wound up cutting open the side of the box and sliding out. Once out of the box I used the “handle” indentations at bottom of each side for better grip.
Couldn’t have been easier to setup. Once I got all of the printer packing tape off and the cartridges seated properly.
I initially setup using hard wired ethernet connection but wound up using wireless so I could move printer around if need be. In both cases the DVD installation software found the printer, updated itself to latest version and was ready to go within 5 minutes. I also set up 2 other windows 10 computers and both were done in just a few minutes.
Has a pretty large color touchscreen. You can do a lot of adjustments using this and it is pretty intuitive but I found it a tad touchy when trying to scroll. Luckily there are up/down/side arrows which I found easier to use to navigate by.
Easily accessed USB 2.0 port in front to allow printing from thumb drives, etc.
This also has NFC “touch to connect” print and scan from your phones if no wifi.
Main tray has 250 sheet capacity.
Multi-purpose tray has 30 page capacity
Every time I opened one of the trays I received an alert stating what paper was loaded and whether I wanted to change it. Also asked if wanted to receive this notice moving forward. I found this a nice feature to make sure you have printer set to correct paper source.
I found the duplex printing to be very fast whether using greyscale or color.
2 sided auto copying was very fast as well using the feeder (50 page capacity). Took a few seconds to scan and just a few seconds to print. The print quality very closely matched the original.
Scanning worked well producing exact replication. Also has adjustments for resolution, size, etc.
If using the plate to scan the feeder tilts up/down as well as expanding upward an inch or so to allow for thicker source such as scanning from a book, etc.
Using the MP tray was easy once I figured out how to use the software to access settings (see below in software)
In all cases I found the text and pictures printed to be very crisp and clear with no smudging even if using lowest resolution and ink saving option(s).
Also, printer is pretty quiet and quickly wakes from sleep mode when sent something to print.
Software;
For computer;
Built in Control Center 4 software which you can select to run at startup and whether to send info back to Brother. Gives you access to run scan/copy/fax as well as adjustments options for each.
Brother Iprint&scan software I found to be pretty useless on my desktop as I couldn’t find how to set the correct tray when trying to print. But it does allow direct access to your source rather than having to use 3rd party software.
Brothers Utility software has several options and allows deeper dive into printers’ functionality, options and purchasing supplies.
From my computer I found it easier if printing from 3rd party software (example – windows 10 photos or word) - was to select print option then select printer options or advanced options. This allows you to select which tray to use, resolution, color or grayscale, duplex, etc. You can also use presets or create your own for next time.
Also includes OCR Paperport 14 software which you can decide to install or not during printer software installation. I have used it in the past and found it useful especially converting scanned pages to editable text.
For phone (android in my case);
Brother Iprint&scan software - I downloaded this app to my android phone – although I did not like all the access it requested. I unchecked sending info on the initial license approval (very bottom document). You can use this to print remotely and I found the print quality to be excellent. But you have to search thru your pictures and select to print them.
I also downloaded Brothers Print Service Plugin to my android phone. This allows you to print a picture you may be viewing using gallery, google pictures, etc. I found it useful and again print quality excellent.
Both apps streamed to the printer pretty quickly with just a slight delay before printing.
1 year warranty
Quibbles;
Printed pages, especially 4 x 6, are not the easiest to get to as they are deposited into a “well” in the middle of the printer. You can tip up the entire top of the printer for easier access but then it looks like a car with its hood up and it is noisier.
I did notice 2 very small thin “lines” running the entire length of the paper when printing 4 x 6 pictures using HP Premium Plus paper. To me it seemed they were created by the wheels moving paper thru the printer? Not noticeable if looked at straight on – only if tilted. Did not seem to occur using regular paper.
Printed documents or pictures were a tad “curly” (not flat). A simple press against a table edge fixed it so just an FYI.
Overall, I think this does a lot of things well. Thoughtful design, software and functionality in a very solidly made printer….

Holds everything we need for new grandson
on July 25, 2018

Nice durable fabric.
Large enough to hold everything but still lightweight.
Liked the separate netting space for bottles
Easy to access side pocket for baby wipes.
Lots of storage pockets to keep it organized. Not cumbersome like a regular diaper bag. Backpack style allows you to have your hands and arms free.
Fold out changing cushion is nice
The only real issue is I used the zippered pocket inside the space designated for the bottles to put an ice pack in. The area is not sealed or insulated and only zips – so leakage could be an issue.
Would definitely recommend

Really shines in transmitting mode
on July 7, 2018
Posted by: mkcar1
from Scottsdale, Az
If you have “older” equipment that is not Bluetooth compatible this will bridge that gap.
I have purchased a couple of Aluratek Bluetooth products (small portable receiver and another small transmitter/receiver mostly used in my cars)) in the past and been very happy with both. This unit continues the winning streak. While not a size I would consider for use in my cars it is perfect for around the home
In the ABC53F box;
ABC53F transmitter/receiver (3x3.5x1 inch – not counting antenna)
USB charging cable (almost 10 feet long)
3.5mm male to male extension cable (almost 6 feet long)
RCA Y to female 3.5mm adapter cable (10 inches in length)
Optical cable (40 inches in length)
Registration card and operation instructions
Pros;
The GREAT twist with this unit is you can use it as a Bluetooth receiver (play your connected devices thru it as is usually the case) OR use it as a transmitter. It is as a transmitter that I believe this unit really shines. Transmitter mode allows you to synch your bluetooth wireless headphones (or maybe speakers) and listen to TV or stereo without disturbing those around you.
The unit is clearly marked as to its inputs/outputs. The on/off/synch switch can be a tad confusing at times as it “communicates” with the user thru a series of colors and blinking light.
I synched a couple of devices both in receiving and transmitting mode and had no problems.
In transmitter mode you can just plug it into a headphone or output jack(s) and you are ready to use. I had no problems connecting device to my TV but did not use digital optical cable. I found the audio lag between headphones and TV voice/video action to be very acceptable.
In receiving mode - since its only audio – there is no perceived lag. Just plug it into an input jack(s) and you are ready to go.
Signal seems to be very strong as I was at least 50 feet away thru 2 walls and didn’t lose the Bluetooth signal.
Cons – at least for me
None really except there is no “brick” in the box to plug the USB recharging cable into AC outlet. This must be an Aluratek “thing” as the 2 other Bluetooth products I purchased did not have one either. Since I have plenty lying a round not an issue but be warned!
Also no native volume control on the unit. I suppose this is to expected as your receiver or headphones will provide the sound level.
Really a great little unit for your home. Since I have used it only a few days not sure how it will hold up but I have had their other 2 products for over a year and have had no issues with either. Would definitely recommend.

Nice entry level gaming monitor
on June 26, 2018
Posted by: mkcar1
from Scottsdale, Az
This has a 24.5 inch screen with 1 millisecond response time, and a 75Hz refresh rate. There are built-in two-watt speakers if you need sound in a pinch. It looked great viewing anything I ran/watched.
In the box are;
Instructions
HDMI (about 5 feet in length)
VGA (about 5 feet in length)
Mini cord extension (about 5 feet in length)
total dimensions 19.9" x 22" x 10.6" (with stand) - 13.07" x 21.96" x 2.20" (without stand)
weight of about 12.5 lbs with stand (8.2 without)
Positives;
Was easily put together
1080P resolution with 2 HDMI inputs (can easily switch between them)
Has adjustable height/tilt/swivel making it very easy to get it perfect for you viewing. You can also turn screen to switch between landscape/portrait viewing.
Hooked it up with provided HDMI cable – turned on desktop – and was ready to go with Windows 10.
Very nice matte black screen that provides virtually no glare.
All adjustment controls are on the front of monitor with nice tactile buttons. So you can tune monitor to your person preferences;
On/off
OSD functions (shows what other buttons do)
Input Button (use to go between inputs)
Volume
Brightness
Mode
Pretty much edgeless except at bottom where controls are
Since this has freesynch the better your video card the better this should perform.
3 year warranty
Negatives;
Speakers are to be used ONLY in emergencies, but that is to be expected…
Not a touch screen and not very slim on the sides.
Definitely worth a look

A Laptop in Desktop clothing
on June 21, 2018
Posted by: mkcar1
from Scottsdale, Az
A nice sturdy all in one for your desktop. If you want a sleek unit that has a very small footprint and you are not planning on any upgrades to its hardware - this is definitely worth a look. A great all-in-one from someone who is not a fan of all-in-ones.
Checking at Lenovos website there appears to be a few options for configuration such as far as drive, memory, screen, etc. This unit has the following specs;
24 inch 1080P tiltable touchscreen monitor.
Intel I7-8550U 1.80GHz Kaby Lake-U/Y 14nm processor
8GB DDR4-2666 (1333 MHz) – only 1 slot
Lenovo 36F1 (U3E1) motherboard
Intel UHD Graphics 620 (1920X1080@60Hz)
1TB Seagate ST1000LM035-1RK172 2.5 inch hard drive (128MB cache, SATA 6.0Gb/s and 5400 rpm)
Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 3165 as well as hard wire option
Bluetooth 4.0
Realtek High Definition Audio
3 USB 3.0 connections
1 USB-C connection
HDMI in/out
IR camera
Combo headphone/mic in jack
3 in 1 card reader
Built in speakers (I believe 2 watts)
Wireless keyboard and mouse
Windows 10 home
total dimensions 21.3" x 16.91" x 1.73”
weight of about 11 lbs
comes with free 3 month McAfee protection
Positives;
It was nicely packaged and it could not have been easier to setup. You only have to attach the base and plug it in. You have to go thru some Windows 10 setup questions (using Cortana) which took a few minutes – but I was up and running within 15 minutes.
It is very nice looking with the grey color scheme and “cloth look” at bottom of screen where speakers and camera are. Screen is pretty much edgeless and very thin.
The wireless keyboard and mouse are very sturdy. The keyboard appears to be metal much heavier than you would think with nice key feel
Not to much “bloat” software to get rid of.
Boots pretty fast (about 15 seconds) – but I disable anything not necessary during startup.
It runs fast and screen resolution/color is great for me. Would be even faster with more memory and SSD instead of platter hard drive (options as I mentioned above).
Touchscreen is nice and being able to use a pen is great but it doesn’t come with a pen
Camera has a manual switch so you can cover it for total privacy
What can you say - its running windows 10 – and runs it well.
The USB ports are fast – especially if you have a USB-C drive/connected device.
Nit picky negatives;
Since this uses Kaby Lake processor and Intel 620 graphics – this is NOT a gaming machine. You can play solitaire, candy crush, use Office, etc. – but if you plan on using for intense gaming I think you will be disappointed. (See PC Mark8 attachment)
No back-light on keyboard and it is not full size
Mouse did not fit my hand very well – but that is very subjective
Cant raise/lower/swivel monitor
Camera is at the bottom of screen – not the top.
Sound is OK but plan on adding external speakers if you want to “rock” it out and have any bass.
USB, ethernet and HDMI connections are on the back of the monitor (not on side or front) so they are a little hard to get too. Card reader and headphone jack are on the bottom/base of the monitor. All are a tad difficult to get to.
Fan can be a little loud at times, but it is sitting right in front of you.
Definitely worth a look….

Frustrating
on May 29, 2018
Posted by: mkcar1
from Scottsdale, Az
I was really looking forward to trying this unit out but found it frustrating to use as no matter what cleaning option I tried I wasnt satisfied with the results.
The problems for me are;
It seems really slow – just circling around a lot of the time or cleaning same area over and over while ignoring the rest of the room/area.
Doesn’t clean an entire floor no matter what option I used. To help verify what was or wasn’t cleaned I put small pieces of Kleenex randomly on the floor. I ran it several times and also had it blocked so as to clean only that 20 x 24 foot bedroom and it still didn’t get entire area. I ran a competing model afterwards and it had everything picked up within 20 minutes.
Most times didnt’t dock itself.
It gets hung up on any smaller throw rugs (bunching them up or flipping them somewhat over) – which is an issue for me as we have 3 in our bathroom and 2 in our utility room. Having to pick up the rugs before cleaning – kind of defeats the purpose no? I have used 2 other competing robots both of which had no problems with the throw rugs.
Relatively small dust bin and while its clear and easy to clean and rinse - you have to wait for filter to dry each time.
If you have a room with no doors and want to clean only that room – there is no easy way to do it so I wound up using furniture to block open access areas. It does come with few feet of what it calls “boundary markers” which is press and stick magnetic tape which I didn’t use it but I don’t see it holding up.
For these reasons I don’t recommend this vacuum as I think there are better alternatives.

As far as I know these speakers pair only with Sonys HT-Z9F soundbar. As such I also included them in my review of the that soundbar.
This review is for the Sony wireless SA-Z9R rear speakers.
In the optional SA-Z9Rwireless speakers box;
2 wireless speakers
Assorted instruction/guides
Pros;
Rear speakers are somewhat small as most back speakers are - but have good heft to them as well. Power and information indicators are around back (same light info as sub-woofer), power button, a link button, a wall mounting hole and another hole if attaching to a speaker stand. They paired as soon as I plugged them in and I have had no “drop outs” of sound/signal. They can be turned up/down from remote with more tuning options thru Home menu. They have plenty of power and really completed the sound experience.
Cons;
None really but be aware these must be plugged into a power source – so you will need an outlet close by.
If you purchase the soundbar – DO plan on getting these wireless back speakers as they really make a difference and truly complete the sound experience!

Protect yourself in the event of an accident with this ESCORT dash cam. The built-in collision detection system stores important footage in the event of a crash, and Wi-Fi connectivity lets you instantly share data with your insurance company. This ESCORT dash cam uses super-capacitor technology to keep recording, even in extreme temperatures.

the BestBuy site recommeds buying 128gb card, however the Escort website says: Q: What is the largest size microSD card I can use with the Escort M1? A: The Escort M1 supports up to 32GB microSD cards. WICH SIZE IS THE CAM MEM. LIMITED TO?

I swapped out the 16GB with a 256GB micr-sd and it formatted fine (fat32) and has been recording fine. I have not recorded enough to actually confirm it will use all 256GB, but it accepted it.
