Still the best Smartphone

So, I was going to go in and purchase a Samsung Galaxy 8+ because of some of the great new features from Google. I had one of the first Google phone when they first came out and loved it. After going back and forth, it made more sense to stay with iOS, so I got the 7+. In short, I could run any and all of my iOS apps, as well as many of those that are on android. While Google Assistant cannot be used in place of Siri, the stability and functionality of the iPhone cannot be beat. The camera is amazing and the apps works solidly. I am not one that has time to tweak my phone, but rather just get things done. Get the iPhone, you will not be disappointed.

After coming from an Apple Display, it is just ok. The spec's and resolution are supposed to be better than the aging mac display, but this one is not a clear or crisp. It is ok, but I would recommend paying the extra $$ for a better screen.

I picked this up as an open-box return. This is an exceptional watch and is a great compliment to my iPhone. The battery lasts me all day (6am-10pm--45% battery left). Siri works great, as do the other apps. My only request would be for a louder speaker for calls. I would like to see this replace my cell phone. The 38mm is plenty large for those with normal size wrists.

Excellent Machine...online reviewer as harsh
on December 13, 2015

So, I had my eyes set on the Microsoft Surface Pro 4. The capabilities of the stylus and keyboard seemed that Microsoft had gotten things right.
Unfortunately, after 6 Surface Pro 4's with hardware issues, I gave up and returned to a Mac. When I was looking for a new machine, I was intrigued at the size and the screen on the 12" Macbook. I did my research and the online reviews all seemed to be really harsh stating that the computer was under powered and overpriced. They would criticize that it only had one port. This is not an issue for me since I live in the cloud. Then at Apple, they would say that this was for those that just wanted to surf the web and do menial tasks. I argued that I would get a $250 Chromebook if that was the case.
I knew I did not want another Macbook Pro because I wanted something small and lightweight. I liked the capabilities of the Air, but the screen was not a retina.
So, I bit the bullet and gave the 12" Macbook a try. To my surprise, this was a very capable device. While I am not cutting the latest version of StarWars in Final Cut Pro, this device can handle video editing quite easily. I use Photoshop daily and use VMware Fusion for running Windows and Linux. I also use it with MatLab and code in Swift. Sure, it is not a Macbook Pro, but I have an iMac and PC for the big stuff. Honestly, those who had reviewed this device seemed to have expectations that would not be satisfied. I am a power user and I use different technologies depending on the task. In my opinion, I think most online reviewers can be out of touch making judgements without understanding the intended user.
So, who is this computer for? I would say anyone. It is a great machine with some nice specs. The Core-M in this device shows that with the right OS, it can function quite well. It has an amazing screen and the 8GB/256GB is great. The Macbook is small and great for travel and is my driver for business and travel. If you keep an eye out, you can find this device around 1099-1149. While not the cheapest computer, you will get your money out of it when you upgrade. Apple's keep their value.
If you are looking seriously at this machine, I would recommend spending some time at the store playing with it. While not for everyone, this Macbook is a really great machine and it can do much more than what the press and super geeks think is acceptable.

Macbook: A Core-M Computer made right
on November 26, 2015
Posted by: Servnhim
from Lynchburg, VA
After reading a number of reviews about the 12” Macbook, I have to say that I was skeptical about this device. It had a price tag that was not impressive and the deal killer seemed to be the Core-M processor and the single USB-C. I too said: “What’s up, Apple??”
To start, this was not my first choice. I went to my local Best Buy and walked out with a shiny new Surface Pro 4. The capabilities of the stylus, screen and size were key selling points for me. That is where things stopped. Windows 10 reminded me of why I use Mac and Linux as my primary operating systems. Without going down a rabbit trail, I returned 4 of these devices due to the touchscreen failing randomly, driver and sleep issues.
After the last issue, I decided to take a gamble on the 12” Macbook. The prices was reduced and was slightly cheaper than the Surface Pro 4.
Honestly, I am really impressed with this little machine. It reminded me a bit of my 12” Powerbook I had years ago. The new Macbook is sleek and one of the best computers for travel. While people will gripe about the one USB-C port, it does not bother me. I use the cloud and have no issues. I also found cheaper adapters that worked fine with this device.
The screen is exceptional. It is bright and crisp making it one of the best screens out there. Some have given this device a hard time because it is not a touch screen…I really don’t care in that I do not need one of this type of machine.
The speed is not going to set any records, but it is quite capable. I have done some simple video editing and use Photoshop all the time. While this is not a Macbook Pro, this machine will not disappoint. It is a capable device and I have finally seen a Core-M work well. Kudo’s to Apple on this one.
The speakers are amazing on this device. Go to the store and fire up a video and you will see for yourself.
The one thing that I am not impressed with is the keyboard. Some love it and others hate it. For me, I am tolerating it for the time being. Because the keys have such a short travel, they bottom out quickly. I just find the keyboard on my old Macbook Air to be more comfortable and accurate when I am typing. The other issue with this keyboard is that my fingers ache. It might just be me, but my whole hand aches when I type for more than 30 minutes on this device.
My only other gripe is the price and not including the multi-poort adapter. I understand that Apple does make quality products, but the initial price of $1399 really pushed people away. Selling a separate dongle for $79 seems a bit greedy. Throw in the adapter and I think people would definitely think about this device.
Pricewise, it is now $1149, which is not bad, but I would get a 13” Macbook Air with 8gb for just a tad more. The Air will definitely give you 13 hours of battery life and you will have a nice pony under the hood to function daily and more.
Note the battery life on the 12” is not bad at all, it is just not the 13 hours of the Macbook Air, which is driving a more powerful processor. You would think that the 12” Macbook would best the Air, but that is not necessarily the case.
Other than some small quirks, I can say that this is a great device. If you do get one, I would recommend trying it out in the store for a bit of time. Also, I would look for the best deal you can get on the computer. Right now, the pricing is floating around $1149. This computer is for someone who wants a Mac in the slimmest form factor. I do think that it is a good device and I would recommend it.

Great concept, but too many issues
on November 23, 2015
Posted by: Servnhim

I chose to get the new Surface Pro 4 based on advertised capabilities. The use of the Pen is one of its best features. This opens so many doors for teaching, tutoring and illustrating complexities that a normal laptop is not capable of doing easily. I loved the size, keyboard, and amazing screen....but that is where it ends.
Unfortunately, I had this device replaced 4 times due to system glitches and malfunctions that could not be resolved.
Honestly, I think that Microsoft should have really waited on releasing this device. There are way too many issues both with Windows 10 and the device itself. The screen would randomly stop responding to touch, the display drivers would crash, and the device would fail to wake up from sleep-mode.
Also, the battery life is no where close to the 9 hours that Microsoft claims. Maybe if you turned it on untouched. The results were maybe 4.5-5 hours just using the web and Office.
Unfortunately, this was not a stellar experience.
I loved the device when it worked, but it failed me when I needed it to work most.
For instance, I was taking notes in a meeting with OneNote and closed the keyboard as we adjourned. When I got to my next appointment, the device would not wake. Thus, I had to do a hard shut down. This happened 4 more times when I was getting ready to teach. The last straw came last weekend when I was working on a couple of documents and closed up to go home. I got in and opened the device and nothing. The device was on in that you could hear a ping as you pressed the spacebar, but the screen was blank. I left for Best Buy and showed them the issue and returned the device and ending up buying a Mac. My local Best Buy is a great place and the service is the best. They should be commended for their professional service.
Lastly, I did spend time with Microsoft support to resolve the issues. They reset my device, reinstalled the OS, deleted and added drivers, etc. After an exhausting 50+ total hours with Microsoft support, which always ended with wanting to send the device in for repairs, I finally gave up. The support personnel were nice, but it was the typical, outsourced MS support. Sending a new device to them only to get a refurbished replacement said to me that there were quality issues that needed to be addressed.
All in all, some have purchased Pro’s and have had no issues. That is great for them. For me, I love the concept of this device, but I think it really needs work. Windows 10 is better than 8.1, but it is still not a tablet friendly OS. The device has amazing capabilities, but it is just unreliable at this point. I do hope that they get these issues resolved. It is a great device…if it worked.
Until then, I am sticking with this Macbook. While it may not have the whiz-bag appeal of the Surface Pro, it works consistently and their support is exceptional. I am capable of running OS X and Windows quite well on this device.
My recommendation is to hold on this device.

Half baked device and Windows 10 too cumbersome
on October 28, 2015
Posted by: Servnhim
from Lynchburg, VA
So, this is my 4th try at a Microsoft device. First, the device is built well and the screen is amazing. I chose the m3 because I thought it would be the most energy efficient. The device was nice until the touch screen would stop responding and I would have to reboot. I spent 4 hours with Microsoft chat support and they were kind and sort of helpful. With that said, I have not had a touch screen crash, so I am continuing to try the device. The new stylus is amazing and works well.
What I am not impressed with is the price. $899 for an M3 processor that is clocked at 900mhz. When you add the keyboard and warranty, this device is the same price as the 12"Macbook that many people are saying is overpriced. I would agree with that statement, but the Surface Pro 4 M3 is also overpriced. For the same price, I can get a Macbook Air and iPad. Also, the battery life on the Surface Pro 4 barely gets 5-6 hours. My old Macbook Air would go all day without plugging in going full force and still would have 50% battery.
My other issues is with the keyboard. My fingers ache after using it. It could be that it is not a good lap device. Lastly, Windows 10 reminds me why I moved away from Windows. Working as a system admin, it was great being able to get into the guts of the OS. Microsoft needs to get rid of the "geek" and simplify the OS, plus make it truly a finger friendly environment. While I understand that it is serving two purposes, I found the OS to be counter productive. In fact, I have had 95% adoption of Ubuntu over Windows 10 among friends over 50. Like it or not, this is really where OS X shines.. The GUI is great and simple for anyone, and because it is built on BSD UNIX, I can do anything in the Terminal.
All in all, this is not the device for me. I do think that Microsoft has an exceptional product and could take many industries if they remain focused. Unfortunately, the M3 is lackluster in battery, cost and overall performance. I will wait for either the prices to go down and include the keyboard or go elsewhere.

Nice idea, but horrible ethics and unreliable
on July 21, 2015

I purchased the Surface 3 because I am a consultant and the market features seemed to demonstrate a windows product that could disrupte the market.
The device was well built. It felt good in my hands and the keyboard cover was nice, but my favorite tool was the stylus. The writing capabilities were near flawless. Because of this, I thought that this device would be the Windows answer to education. There was an adapter that would even allow for wireless presenting via a projectors/TV's HDMI port.
With that said, this was the only positive points to the Surface. Prior to purchasing the device, I talked with the Microsoft Store via their 877-phone number. I explained to the gentleman online what I planned to use the Surface for and asked which model would fit my needs. He replied, "It all can be found on the web". I asked again, based on the information I gave him, which would best fit my needs, and again repeated that all my answers could be found on the web and "would that be all". Shocked by the lack of customer service, I replied that I would go to my local Best Buy since they would be interested in making a sale. I asked one additional question about purchasing the Microsoft Support. I wanted to know if it needed to be purchased immediately or could I add it on later, much like Apple or Lenovo. I also wanted to know if the support was US based and not outsourced. He said yes and immediately ended the call.
Shocked by his rudeness, I went to my local Best Buy and received great service, thus walking away with a new Surface 3 (128GB).
After playing with it for a few hours, the device just did not feel complete. Windows 8.1 just seemed to be a confused system that could not make up its mind. The Metro feel was excellent for tablet use, but the desktop was not finger friendly. Microsoft need to create a full table mode in Windows 10 and allow for the systems administrator in me choose the desktop when I want. Regardless, this device is centered on the customer. While one could argue that it is 2 devices in one, this device would require training to properly get around the OS. While you can argue that you can run full blown Windows applications, that is not much of a hallmark. It is nice, but I can get a more powerful touchscreen ultrabook for less $$$. Moving to the Microsoft App Store...this is pathetic. No one is developing for the platform at all. PERIOD. The apps suck and there is no ecosystem. One can give grief to iOS and Android, but you can find just about anything on their respective platforms. Again, people would argue that you don't need the app store because you can run full Windows applications on the Surface. In short, and back to my point, Windows 8.1 is a disjointed system and does not focus on the customers needs.
Moving along, I ran the 95+ windows updates and rebooted. Once up, the screen exhibited graphic lines when using internet explorer and would show buzz lines when running Onenote. I played around with it for another hour and it happened at random. I called support and immediately got a foreign support tech. I asked if this call center was located in the USA and the tech said yes. I said, "ok" and told her what the device was doing. She asked if I ran the 95+ updates and I said "yes". She immediately said the device was defective and I should return it....no further technical questions at all. Shocked, I asked her if we needed to go through any additional troubleshooting steps and he replay was no and wanted to know if I had any further questions. I said yes, could I speak to a supervisor and the reply was no. I asked where this call center was located and she said it was in the Philippines. Shocked, I asked why she lied to me about support being in the USA, she hung up.
I called again to speak to s supervisor and received the same customer service. That said, I returned the device to Best Buy.
In short, Microsoft has potential, but they need a real lesson in customer service. As a consultant, I would be more than glad to help them fix the issues. Unfortunately, they are quite bloated and are quite arrogant....and they are losing a customer

Best Phone on the Market
on December 24, 2014
Posted by: Servnhim
from Lynchburg, VA
I have had my share of phones from Blackberry, to Windows Mobile, to Android and even Linux.
With my first iPhone, the 4s, I have not looked back. There were times when the Moto X, Galaxy S5 (mil-spec), and HTC really got my attention. They offered some really cool capabilities, but after awhile, the devices ended up back at the carrier store with me walking out with an Apple device.
For me, I look for ROI. I am an entrepreneur/businessman and do not really have time to play anymore. I need a device that is reliable and just works. This is the iPhone. The 6 is has a bigger screen and is a exceptional smartphone that has exceeded my expectations. The size is great for reading and working, but I have to say I agree with Steve Jobs that the 4" is the perfect size for one handed use.
Other than that, the iPhone 6 has superior applications and can run literally all applications that are provided via Android. So, I have the best of both worlds.
I develop for both platforms and find that Android and iOS are great platforms.
My family also uses my device for photos, etc., so it is easy to use. Again, I am not interested in rooting a device or all the customizing that Android users like. Honestly, they become more of a distraction than being productive.
Also, all of my iPhones kept their value. So, if you sell your device, you will get 70% more than any other device on the market.
Lastly, I got my iPhone 6 for $1 a month and my unlimited cell plan dropped to $51 per month via a Sprint and Best Buy promotion. Sprint has served me well for 10 years and have had very little issues.
For those looking for a solid phone that will keep its value, you will not be disappointed with the iPhone 6.

Outstanding product

This is my 3rd iPad and had recently sold my original iPad Mini. I chose to go with the iPad Mini 2 over the Mini 3 due to the fact it was $100 cheaper and the only difference was the Touch ID.
I have used other devices, such as the Samsung 10" and Nexus 9 and while they had some great features, they still were buggy and tended to lag over time.
The iPad is consistent and is a performer. The screen is incredible and it serves me exceptionally well. I can run Microsoft Office if I like, but I have dumped Office pretty much except for Excel.
In my opinion, it is more functional that Android and Windows in that I can use Messages (iOS and Mac), Hangouts, Google Apps, Office, and yes Photoshop (this is in beta). I have moved to Pixelmator and tend to edit on my laptop.
My main use is on the road and for mobile applications development, presentation, etc.
I would recommend this device over anything else on the market. If you want a Mini-Mini, get the iPhone 6 Plus.
If you are in the market for a great tablet, go for the Mini 2 or Air.

Not Compatible w/ a world of Microsoft and MAC OS
By LCOOK
The solid state drive is heaven. The computer runs smoothly and quickly. Battery life is impressive. It's aesthetically pleasing and portable.
BUT Nearly every application runs online.
If you were attached to Microsoft Office, prepare to have your life disrupted. The Word Online substitute is basic and does not offer more advanced options.
You cannot download older programs, games, instant messengers, etc. Anything that has not been designed recently to work with a Chrome OS cannot be downloaded.
If you don't have internet you literally can't even open Google Docs/Sheets/Slides (Chrome's pathetic excuse for a Microsoft Office program replacements). There are offline options, but really... I need to be connected to the internet to type a few words in a document?
Every program you want must be in the Google Play Store. That's it. Those are your options. Want to play an old game you purchased online? Nope. Want to use an instant message system? Too bad. Want to watch an Amazon Prime Video? No can do.
The Chromebook is to disconnected from the classic OS we are used to. The computer simply can't run the programs most computers can. It's infuriating. I don't think you can get different browsers either (I.E. Mozilla, IE)
Finally, their "Settings" is confusing, limited, and prevent the user from changing more advanced settings easily-if at all.
A good second computer, I guess. I runs well.... it just doesn't run much!

If you need Office...
November 16, 2014
For those that need Microsoft Office, you can get a usable web version of Office by getting an Outlook.com account. This will open and edit all Office documents and keep formatting. It does not have every feature that the installed product has, but for 90% of those using Office, this will suffice.

Webroot instead of Trend Micro
By Rita
I had nothing but problems with Trend Micro because it kept telling me I was trying to protect 3 computers with it. I only have two laptops!!!! The salesperson suggested I change to Webroot instead and have been much happier. No problem with the installation. I like the screens better and it doesn't seem to be 'in my face' every time I turn on the laptop. So far I am very pleased with the differences!

No need to pay...get Sophos Home
February 12, 2017
Sophos Home is the best free Antivirus out there. It is enterprise protection, including web filtering if you want, for free. Webroot is not my favorite in that it is extremely hard to remove for most users. Don't waste time or money. Sophos Home, Avira and others offer great protection for home users.

Tablet PC's and student discounts.

Just curious, does Best Buy give student discounts on Tablet PC's? I know i'm being cheap buy I just know that as soon as I buy the Asus Transformer tomorrow, (i've finally settled on buying this per the reviews i've been reading.) I know that some outlandish sale/coupon will come out soon after I spend the money on it. Im a non-working student on a budget after I spent money on a MAC that I am not fond of. :-) Thanks for any input given!
Yes, Best Buy does honor student discounts. Here is a link: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/global/college-student-deals/pcmcat276200050000.c?id=pcmcat276200050000

Setting up a new Acer 11 Chromebook for my daughter.

Hello, I am seeking some assistance with how to set up this computer for my 7 year old daughter. My question is: Do I create a new account in her name, or do I login with my email? I would like to be able to control what she has access to. I also don't want her seeing or deleting any of my emails.

Is there a step-by-step guide for setting this up?

Thank you so much.
You can do this. Most parents do not want their kids on their own Gmail account. If you do this, you can manage multiple accounts as a parent. I would recommend this. Here are some links that might help:
