Love this product, it has replaced both my previous laptop, and all of my notebooks (thanks to OneNote). Microsoft has done a great job getting that pen to feel good. I've handed it to several of my classmates who have been shocked by how well writing on the Surface feels. Being able to jump from taking notes to excel to matlab all in one device is great. I do most of work on desks and tables, so the slight awkwardness of trying to use the Surface with keyboard on my lap hasn't really been a problem for me, but I can see it being pretty annoying.
My only complaint is that the battery life is acceptable, but not what I would call good. I can pull out between 5 to 7 hours of use in a day if I'm working hard. When I'm using it, I think "This is the future". Then the low battery signal pops up and I remember that we're not quite there yet.
I would recommend this to a friend!
