Would this be ideal for a college student? I tend to do a lot of papers & research. Also I need something light weight.

Yes it would be ideal for a college student. It is very light weight and thin, so you can easily carry in a backpack without really adding weight to your load. And the touch screen makes editing those papers even easier.
