Great Oven for the Price

My oven stopped working the week before Thanksgiving. Picked out this Whirlpool convection oven. It heats up quickly. I am still learning to use the convection. So far, I haven't found it to be faster, but it cooks evenly.

How come the cooktop grates on this model have "spaces" or "holes" where the burners are? On other whirlpool models there is a full grill grate with no holes.I am confused.
