Beautiful picture

When I first turned on this TV to an HD movie (Kingdom of Heaven) I let out some spontaneous "holy this or that" expostulations. Of course, I was upgrading from an Insignia 32" so maybe I was too easy to please, but I've had decent-sized TVs before and still this picture tops my previous experience, with beautiful cinema-quality tones, crisp lines and rich deep blacks, The unusually detailed and intuitive Menu allows easy fine-tuning of pretty much anything you'd want to adjust, although after some experimentation I reverted to the default settings, which actually had it best. In HD this TV can actually convey something far closer to what movie directors had in mind, which we don't usually ask TVs to do. That said, I've had some disappointment with recorded shows (e.g., a Game of Thrones episode accidentally recorded not in HD) where the whole screen developed a pastiche of purple and other-color artifacts which formed a kind of messy pixilated transluscent layer that didn't move with the picture. Quite distracting and bothersome since I'd had friends over to watch it. I have no idea why the TV did this, despite some Google cruising for answers, although truly I haven't noticed it at other times so it's not a running problem. But it shook my faith in the TV's capacity to interpret not-so-great on-line recordings. And of course if you care about sound quality at all you'll want a sound bar or other external speakers, as the sound on all these flat screen TVs is typically very mediocre and this one is no exception. Just be sure your external speakers can sync to your remote - I tried and had to return a Vizio sound bar that didn't.

Trouble with set-up

This soundbar has beautiful sound. It's clear at mid and upper ranges as well as providing a big deep bass you can crank up if you want to. Greatly improved the sound of my new Samsung 42" and the price was great. BUT, there proved to be no way on the planet to sync the sound bar with the TV or cable box so I didn't have to use two remotes all the time. As someone who's constantly readjusting the volume (down for crashy parts, up for dialogue), two remotes are much too cumbersome for me. No 4-digit code from the new TV,, no Mediacom expert, no Best Buy expert or tech elf could solve the problem and eventually a more experienced Best Buy sales guy told me it couldn't be done. Returned the bar with disappointment and bought a Best Buy DVD/5.1 surround home theater system. Better sound than the Samsung TV, of course, but not such great sound as the bar. So I recommend this bar to anyone who has a home theater system or universal remote that can accept it - and be sure you talk to a senior tech person about exactly how to do this. .

Do you need a sound bar?

Yes, the sound isn't great and if you care about sound at all you'll want something better. When I bought the TV, Best Buy was selling a Vizio sound bar with great sound for just $100-ish and it was beautiful. Just be sure the sound syncs to your remote or you'll be juggling two remotes all the time. I finally had to give up the Vizio and get a home theater surround sound system, but I needed a new Blu-Ray player anyway so it wasn't that much of a problem.

Is it normal for the tv to angle back a bit when on the stand? My guess is that just due to the weight and dimensions, it angles back to keep it from falling forward but just want to make sure it's normal for this particular tv.

I had exactly the same problem. I called the store and they advised me to double check the four screws on the back that connect the TV to the stand. I'm an old hand with assembling things and was sure I had them tight, but to eliminate the possibility I gave them an extra little push with the screwdriver. Then I heard a soft little plastic "snap" and the bottom screws were suddenly loose and then settled significantly further in, pulling the TV screen more vertical. Apparently the plastic stand connection is so tight it can catch a bit, not allowing the bottom screws to go in as far as they should so that they actually hold the TV in that backward tilt . Anchored the bottom screws again and the tilt vanished -- hope it works for you.

I would be sitting about 12ft from the tv in my bedroom. would a 50 inch tv be too large?

I have a 42" TV sitting just a couple of feet from the foot of my bed and it's just right, so I'd think a 50" that's 12 feet away would also be fine.

My measurement is 2 1/4" from the bottom of the base to the bottom of the black frame around the screen.

I have TIVO on a smaller HDTV TV set that we rarely use. Is there and reason why I can't just use that TIVO for this new Samsum 40?

I doubt it. My TIVO, which was set up originally on a little 32" Insignia, worked immediately and fine with this Samsung.

where are the speakers located on this tv

Built-in speakers run along the back of the TV, about 3 inches down from the top of the TV.
