I used this to provide a surge protector for my group of electronics. This was better than using extension cords. It also provides an output to charge cell phone and a tablet.

Can I plug the powerline adapter into the surge protector itself instead of a wall mount?

Yes. But the box is a surge protector. So you don't need to do thst.
