Great so far, but different from my old top-loader

Our venerable old stand-up washer finally gave up the ghost. We've had this new one for a month and a half and so far it's great. Quiet, efficient, and gentle, and plays a happy jingle when the laundry's done.
It does take longer to run a load than the top-loading kind on average. For our slow-paced household, the benefits outweigh the extra time per load, but your mileage may vary. On the plus side, the digital display will tell you in advance exactly how long your load will take based on the settings you've selected, which lets you plan your loads very precisely.
One small problem though is that there's no easy way to "fast forward" a cycle in progress. On my old stand-up you could just spin the dial a few notches further; with the digital display, the only way that I've found to speed things up during the wash cycle is to turn the machine off, then turn it back on, then initiate the "rinse and spin" cycle separately. This is pretty painless in practice (the machine turns on and off quickly) but a little more flexibility would have been nice.
This is a fairly minor quibble, though. This has been a great washer for our household so far. It's made me more conscientious about how I do laundry, since I have so much control over spin speed, temperature, and extra cycles. My clothes spend less time in the dryer because they wring out so well, and at the same time they show less wear and tear than before.
Lastly: I've heard a lot of different opinions on how long these front-loading washers last. Some people say they break down within a few years, others say that was only an issue with the early generations and those bugs have been fixed. Still others say that you won't have trouble as long as you use the washer within specifications.
So, we're going to do the best to keep it in good condition: leave the door open after you're done to prevent mildew from growing, don't load the drum past 50%, use only HE detergent (most brand names are HE nowadays but make sure you check; it's marked on the package) and clean the filter every two months. Hopefully this washer will be with us for a long time.

I would recommend this to a friend!
