Great sounding speaker

The SRS-XBG501G is another “party” speaker from Sony, with the dancing light bar and speaker lights and the ability to connect several speakers together for even bigger room filling sound. The difference with the XBG501 is that it also has the Google Assistant and Chromecast built in.
The initial connection took a bit longer than I expected and it seems you have to connect to Wi-Fi first before you connect to Bluetooth.
The speaker just sounds great. The sound is full, and the bass is thumping. All of which is adjustable by using the Sony Music Center app. There is enough volume to fill decent size room or yard to dance the night away. The “Live” feature really expands the sound and makes the channel separation apparent. This is a feature Sony has been using for years and it doesn’t disappoint in this speaker either.
Like other Sony speakers, the XBG501 has party lights, a ring around the speaker grill and a white light that shines on the lower middle speaker. These are controlled by the app as well. It’s said they dance to the beat of the music but they seem to just randomly flash.
The XBG501 is IP65 rated so its water resistant and dust proof. Unlike some of its smaller siblings, it is NOT water proof however.
Now, for the Google Assistant. Why? Google still has not released the full Assistant for devices that offer it built in. This is the second speaker I have with the Google assistant built in and it hasn’t been updated yet to offer the full assistant. You can not make phone calls on this speaker via the assistant unless you use a third-party app. Also, you must be connected to Wi-Fi for the google assistant to work. Had Sony developed a way for the google assistant to work through Bluetooth while connected to a phone, I would have been impressed. Overall though, not sure the Google Assistant on this speaker is worth it. Remove it and reduce the price.
Battery life is rated at 16 hours and it takes about 5 hours for a full charge. After several separate days of play I still have about 50% battery life remaining. There is a USB-C port that you can use to charge your phone. It’s nice to see companies finally keeping up with the times.
Overall, I like the rounded design and love the sound. The battery life is decent and the tripod socket is a nice touch. In my opinion adding the google assistant is just a waste and the un-synchronized lights continue to disappoint.
I would only recommend this to a friend if the price were lower.

Why?
on October 9, 2018
Posted by: RonH
from Washington DC
I have to say my first thoughts when I saw this little photo printer is why?
The HP Sprocket 200 photo printer prints 2x3 prints on a special paper called zInk which doesn’t need any ink cartridges or ribbons and clearly allows a device just a bit larger than your phone print some really decent prints.
You install an app, load the paper, connect the printer via Bluetooth and print. And it only took about as long as it took to read this sentence.
The app allows you to edit your pictures and add stickers, borders and frames and several other goodies. I am amazed at the quality of the prints that come out of this little device. You can peel the back off the prints and they become stickers. Great for scrap and memory booking.
The little kid in me says this is a really cool thing and I want it for Christmas. The grown-up in me says I wish I had kids to get this for.
It reminds me of the instant camera I begged for when I was young.
The paper runs about $5 for packs of 10 sheets and seems to be available everywhere.
The grown-up in me feels this technology is amazing and I wish there were larger sizes like 4x6 or 5x7.
I would recommend this device to anyone who wants to put a smile on their child's face.
That’s why!

The Earbuds to Beat
on September 22, 2018
Posted by: RonH
from Washington DC
The Epic Air Elite True Wireless Sport Earbuds are the third set of wireless earbuds I’ve had and I think they will be hard to beat.
Having two sets of wired JLab earbuds, I expected the sound to be on point and the wireless sports didn’t disappoint. Right out of the case, pairing was flawless. The buds paired to each other then paired to my phone. There are 8 different sets of ear tips so everyone can get the perfect fit. Unlike previous earbuds, the tips are located on posts in a section at the bottom of the case rather than just tossed in a little zipper bag.
The fit is the best ive had. There is a clip that goes around your ear to help hold the buds in. At no point was I concerned about the buds falling out of my ears. These clips also have the Bluetooth antennas in them which helps keep them from dropping out. This and Class 1 Bluetooth. Whichever it is, I have to say it worked flawlessly. At no point so far has the sound cut out in either ear, something that happens regularly in my other wireless buds. I was able to get it to cut out for a second by cupping my hand over my ear however.
But how do they sound? Amazing! There are three equalizer settings, balanced, bass boost and my favorite, JLab Signature which has tons of bass mixed with just a hint of treble. Unlike other earbuds, this setting is handled right on the buds rather than requiring an app. Simply touch the buds together for 3 seconds and they cycle through each of the 3 settings.
Speaking of touching the buds, the controls are touch sensors in each bud. Each side controls something different based on taps and holds.
Probably my biggest disappointment with these buds is a new feature called “Be Aware Audio” which is supposed to use the built-in microphones to allow outside sounds through so you can hear your surroundings. This would be great for runners, bikers and even if you wear them in an office setting so you can hear conversations with your co-workers. If you have the volume low enough, you can hear a staticky sound and if you rub your finger around the bud, you can hear it. I really like this concept and have seen it on other headphones but was disappointed in it on these buds. Also, it would be nice to have the directions give a bit more info on what to expect in this mode.
On phone calls, the other person was able to hear me clearly and I could hear them perfectly, in both ears rather than just one side.
Battery life, the Epic Air Elites are rated at 6 hours per charge with the case providing an additional 5 charges. The buds charge every time you put them back in the case, which is also how they turn on and off, just take them out and they pair and turn on, put them back, they turn off and charge. The case also has a USB plug you can use to charge anything else, like your phone or music player. I have not been able to wear the buds long enough to see if they meet the six hour rated time but I haven’t had to charge the case yet since I got them. The battery case is solid but it is a bit large to carry in your pocket. It is better suited to a gym bag or back pack.
Overall, these are the wireless earbuds to beat. The sound is great and adjustable to your taste, the fit is amazing, the battery life is best in class and the connectivity hasn’t dropped out yet.

Great sounding water-proof speaker
on September 18, 2018
Posted by: RonH
from Washington DC
The first thing you notice when you take the Megaboom 3 out of the box is the build. The unit is solid and has just the right amount of heft to it.
The fabric covering is a nice touch but concerned how long it will hold up, especially if you take this to the beach or pool, where it seems the Megaboom was built to be. It is water proof and floats. There is a hanging loop, a nice touch would have been to include a carabiner clip as well.
There is an app that is a must-download which controls the equalizer, block party which allows up to 3 people control the music and multi-speaker setting which allows you to pair up to 150 boom speakers.
The sound out of the box is very good with lots of bass. Comparing to my Bose, the sound was a little fuller but on par. Volume is plenty loud and the sound was clear up to about 85% when it started to distort. The equalizer in the app has a couple presets and a custom control, all sound great and the speaker adapts immediately when you select a preset or make a change.
There is a big plus and minus button on the side of the speaker to control the volume however, you have to press each in the middle to make any changes.
Pairing was simple and effortless. As soon as the Megaboom paired with my iPhone, the phone indicated the app and went to the app store to download.
The large button in the center of the top is a magic button which controls song playback as well as immediately playing your chosen play list but only if you use Apple Music or Deezer Premium. Otherwise it will play, pause and skip songs.
When you power up, power down and connect, the speaker plays a melody of sounds rather than a voice greeting like many of my other speakers. You get the battery level by pressing the plus and minus at the same time and it will speak it. You can also see the battery level in the app when the speaker is connected.
One thing that is missing but most likely won’t be missed is the ability to make and receive phone calls. This speaker is for playing music only.
The battery is rated for 20 hours and I haven’t had to charge it yet, playing a couple of hours a day for the last week. Charging is done with a micro USB plug or a charging base, which is optional and will set you back $40. For what it appears to be, a circular disk with connection pins, this should have been included, not optional.
Pros:
Overall sound and ability to adjust via equalizer/app
Fit and Finish
Battery Life
Cons:
Volume buttons
On/Off sounds rather than voice
Magic Button only access Apple Music and Deezer Premium
Price
Overall, I am impressed with this speaker and would recommend it to a friend, especially if it is on sale.

Return to simplicity with this Lenovo all-in-one desktop computer. It has an Intel Core i7 processor that blazes through various tasks, and there's 1TB of storage within its slim 23.8-inch screen, so you don't need a tower. With 8GB of RAM, this Lenovo all-in-one desktop handles multiple applications like a charm.

Middle of the road

The first thing you notice when you unbox this PC is how sleek it looks. Grey/black with a cloth covering over the speakers at the bottom of the display which also includes the camera. This look continues with the keyboard and mouse. This unit will look great on any desktop.
The display is 1920x1080 and is plenty bright and crisp. The thin bezel adds to the sleekness of the unit.
Performance.
All-in-One computers are generally the insides of a laptop attached to the back of a monitor and this one is as well. They use low-power components to minimize the heat since space is so limited.
The Lenovo comes with an 8th generation I7 1.8ghz quad core chip with turbo boost to 4.0ghz. along with a built-in intel UHD graphics card which unlike the description, uses system RAM rather than having its own dedicated memory. Not being a gamer, research says this graphics card will play basic games but don’t count on it for any high power/fast action games, you will be disappointed.
There is a 5400 rpm 1TB laptop drive which is great for storage but a slowdown for overall system performance. A solid-state drive would do wonders for the speed.
The system comes with 8 GB ram which in my opinion is the bare minimum you should have for a computer with these specs. My issue with this is there is only one memory slot so to upgrade to 16 GB, which is the max for this machine, requires you to lose the existing 8 and replace it with one 16 GB chip. Additionally, there is an Intel M.2 slot which is for Optaine RAM which acts as additional cache rather than actual system ram to speed the system. I would have rather seen this slot be used for an SSD drive.
There are three USB 3 ports however, one is required for the receiver for the keyboard and mouse. There is a fourth USB-C port which is really cool to have.
Cooling fan. Yes, there is a cooling fan and yes, you can hear when it spins up. Generally, it's not horrible and I wouldn't consider it a deal breaker since everything has them and they all make noise.
Another thing I thought interesting is the HDMI port. There is a switch to make it input or output, so you can use this monitor as a television or second monitor for another pc if you wish.
The keyboard and mouse are fashionable, but the keys are an odd shape and the layout seems a bit off. The travel and feel of the keys is good, very similar to a laptop. There is no shift lock or number lock indicator on the keyboard nor is there a power switch that I can see, and it uses 2 AAA batteries which were included. There is a small sliver of a button in the upper right that says LVT but I have yet to figure out what it's for. The mouse is a basic scroll mouse with no side buttons and uses one AA battery, also included. Both connected without incident.
The 730S came with a 30-day subscription to MacAfee which I immediately removed to use windows defender.
Microsoft Office is also preinstalled and will provide a 30-day trial, or you can enter your existing subscription information to keep it rolling along.
Conclusion
Anymore, I would consider this an entry-level computer, good for web browsing, watching Netflix and youtube with a little Word and Excel thrown in for good measure. Great for a small home office where lightning speed isn't so much needed.
I would have loved it to have 16 GB Ram and an SSD drive and am already looking for the drive to replace the included 5400 RPM. Price wise, it seems to be in the middle of the pack of similar models from the other major players.
When purchasing a computer, I feel it's more important to buy according to your needs rather than hoping something fits because you got it on sale or it looked pretty.
I would recommend the Lenovo IdeaCenter 730S AIO with the above cavieats.

Rowkin who?
on June 2, 2018
Posted by: RonH
from Washington DC
The first thing I thought of when I opened the Rowkin Surge Charge headphones was a company had purchased an overstock of old Bluetooth cell phone headsets and are re-selling them in pairs.
Each unit is a stand-alone unit and while the instructions say to pair the right side first then turn on the left, either one can be master or slave for stereo pairing and if you just want one, that’s fine too. Each unit has its own volume up, down and control/power button. When they are paired, the volume button on either unit controls the total volume, not individual ear piece. The volume buttons also change tracks when held longer. The control button answers the phone and the volume buttons + and - when pressed together put a call on mute.
The good:
Bass. These headphones have the best bass of any of the wireless headphones I’ve tried. The sound over all is very good with bright highs, decent mid-range and TONS of bass.
Volume. These headphones have more than enough volume to blast out any outside noise.
The fit. The ear clip keeps these headphones secure enough for just about any workout. I was not concerned about them falling off during a bike ride or run.
The bad (really just not so good):
The fit. The headphones come with three sizes of rubber tips and do not include a memory foam type tip. The sized tips fit on a large round protrusion from the headphones, I presume this is what allows the great bass. It also seems to hinder the fit in my ear just a bit. The piece that wraps around the ear to hold the headphone on is adjustable however.
The delay. There is a noticeable delay between ears. This is not horrible, in fact, it kind of makes it seem you are in a large theater or venue.
Ability to hold a signal. There were many times when one side (the slave side) would drop out for a fraction of a second or more.
No app to control the headphones or sound.
Phone calls. Not the best sounding phone call I’ve ever had but I was able to carry a conversation with no difficulty.
Battery life. My use of a headphone consists an hour-long commute to and from work. I’ve been able to get 3 days of listening on one charge. I have not listened to these in one continuous four or five hour burst to see if they live up to their stated 5-hour battery life in one set. I am totally turned off by the charging as noted below.
The ugly:
The charging case! Rather than simply placing the units in the case to charge, you have to pull the plastic cap off a micro USB charging port and plug a cable into each of the headphones. This alone would be enough for me not to recommend these to a friend and is the reason for the 3 stars. The case does have its own battery but you could just as easily charge each one with a standard cell phone charger if you wanted.
Overall, I would recommend these to a friend if they were on sale, only for the sound. I believe there are better options available.

Worth consideration
on May 15, 2018
Posted by: RonH
from Washington DC
On paper, the specs of this machine are very good. The 8550U is designed for everyday productivity, providing the perfect mix of performance and battery life. It is a quad core, 8 thread chip with a base speed of 1.8GHz and turbo boost up to 4.0GHz. It’s got 16gb ram which should be more than enough for general day to day computing and it has a 256gb SSD for storage.
Overall build/feel
This laptop is built like a tank. The metal body is well fitting and feels solid. The hinges are sturdy and feel like they will last a while, considering this is a two-in-one that folds the screen all the way back.
The downside to this quality build is weight. This laptop is HEAVY. It is built to service double duty as a tablet but i would guess the tablet Moses carried down the mountain weighed less than this. While the screen has a minimal bezel, the 15.6 size makes it just too large and bulky to hold and use as a tablet for me.
Screen
The 4K display is a thing of beauty. Crisp and clear with vibrant colors. The screen is plenty bright. However, a panel of this size looks just as good with 1920x1080 when playing video. With the resolution of 3840x2160, you have to magnify the size of text to 200% (250% is recommended) to make it readable.
Driven by an NVIDIA GeForce MX130 with the faster 2GB GDDR5 dedicated video memory seems better suited for productivity and some video than gaming.
Mouse/trackpad
The trackpad is responsive and gestures seem to work well so far. You have to go several layers deep in the settings to change some of the gestures but that's not the laptops fault.
Keyboard
The chiclet keyboard is backlit but missing a number pad. Travel is short but the keys have a good feel and feedback. Due to the lack of a number pad, the key spacing is a bit wider than most which makes it easier to type for people like me with larger fingers.
Battery life
Battery life without any saving settings is just over 4 hours, with battery saving i was able to extend it to about 7 hours.
Stylus/Windows Ink
The stylus works out of the box and is responsive. There is a sketchpad app included for drawing. It could be used like blank paper for written notes as well.
Camera
The camera has both an IR lens as well as a camera lens so it can be used for facial recognition to unlock the pc with windows hello. This was surprisingly accurate and worked well. It's a feature I am learning to love a lot, even more than the fingerprint sensor on my XPS.
Sound
Its a laptop with laptop sound. It's not the best i've ever heard but far from the worst.
Observations
The charger brick gets really hot, almost to to the point of concern, especially when you are working on the laptop and its charging at the same time. Speaking of heat, the bottom of the unit gets a bit warm but not unbearably so. I've read some reviews that say the cooling fans are loud but this is not my experience, when rendering video with Premiere Pro, the fans were no louder than the ambient noise.
The 256gb SSD drive is nice but after the operating system, Adobe creative cloud and microsoft office, on-machine storage starts to come at a premium. Fortunately, according to the documentation, the SSDis user replaceable for those not afraid to work on their pc’s. Also, it appears, in Dell fashion, they use the same parts for several systems and it looks like the space where a physical hard drive would go is still available and the connecting cable is there too.
Another issue i've experienced several times is the display going blank, especially when it seems it's thinking hard. Not sure if this is just a bad driver or a faulty product.
Overall
I really wanted to hate this laptop but i can't. It’s got a beautiful screen and decent sound. The facial recognition is my new best friend and typing is comfortable and easy. It's not the fastest pc i've ever used but i feel a lot of the slowness is caused by the antivirus and security software. It is more than capable of running Adobe Creative suite programs.
As long as you know what you are looking for and don't have unrealistic expectations, this laptop will serve you well.

Not for the average consumer
on April 29, 2018
Posted by: RonH
from Washington DC
The first thing to know about this soundbar is the size of the box it comes in, it is HUGE! You will need a large car, SUV or truck to get this home.
Unpacking and setup was a snap. The wireless sub connected immediately. There is an included optical cable to connect it to your setup but no HDMI cables. There are two templates for the mounting hardware and a one-page setup/user guide which was difficult to read. You can download it along with a full user manual from the LG site and I would advise doing so.
I had a bit of difficulty connecting to Wi-Fi on 5G but it connected fine to regular signal. The LG Speaker app was nice to have but seems at this price point, should do more.
There are sound presets for Movie, Music, Standard, ASC and Bass Blast that offer different sound configurations based on what you’re listening to.
I thought the bar did an excellent job at creating an immersive sound experience. I could differentiate musical instruments and their locations among the orchestra as well as hearing planes fly overhead from left to right and front to back. I will still get the rear speakers though to round out the set. The volume is more than enough for an average home and would bother my neighbors at higher levels.
The remote control is basic with power, volume, play controls and a few sound controls. It is responsive and the bar reacts quickly.
This sound bar contains technology I will probably never understand and I’ve read several reviews of people arguing over the finer points of Dolby Atmos and high definition sound, but the important part of it for me is that it makes my movies and music sound better than any thing else I’ve had in the past.
The price and technology make this more suited for audiophiles rather than the average consumer, however, I would recommend this to a friend if they had the means.

Improve daily oral hygiene routines with this Philips Sonicare electric toothbrush. An internal sensor regulates applied pressure to prevent soreness of teeth and gums, and the BrushSync reminder lets you know when it's time to change the brush head. This Philips Sonicare electric toothbrush removes up to seven times more plaque than a regular toothbrush to maintain oral health.

Not impressed
on March 26, 2018

I’ve been using a battery-operated tooth brush for several years and figured I try the Phillips Sonicare. Sadly, I was not impressed.
The Sonicare comes with one brush, the handle, charger base and a plastic carrying case which holds the handle and two brushes.
I found using the Sonicare to be difficult, especially once the handle got wet as it became slippery. There is a timer which turns the brush off after 3 minutes. You can just turn the unit on again if your brushing is longer than that. The brush speaks to the handle and senses how hard you are brushing and lets you know if it feels too much pressure. It also uses this information to determine when you should replace your brush.
After using for a week, my teeth don’t feel any cleaner than when using my previous brush, and replacement heads are considerably more expensive than my battery ones.
While the Phillips Sonicare does what its supposed to do, I can not recommend it to a friend.

It floats!

The Sony SRS-XB31 is a solid compact speaker with an interesting cloth cover which gives it a unique feel unlike any of the others I have.
The first thing you notice when you take it out of the box is the quality feel. The build and weight are very good but its not too heavy to carry around or hold in your hand.
Pairing with my iPad was quick and the NFC paired with my phone simply by touching the phone to the speaker. The volume is impressive. At full volume, it fills my house and sounds clean even at max level. The lights are a nice touch but don’t seem to flash to the music, just to their own beat. I liked the white strobes behind the grill.
Like many speakers today, there is an app and it is a must have. It allows you to change the sound profile, and light settings along with setting up the party mode. There are 3 preset sound profiles, standard, extra bass and live sound. There is also an equalizer to personalize the sound to your personal taste.
The Party Booster feature allows you to tap the speaker in the front, sides, top and bottom to make different sounds, like a drum set or percussion. It’s a neat feature but not sure it will be used much. The harder you tap the unit the louder the sounds are. You have to tap it pretty hard to get any type of volume from it. Sounds great on paper but not sure about the execution. Perhaps if I were at a party with the 99 other speakers chained together it would be really cool.
Battery life is rated at 24 hours without the lights. I’ve been listening to this speaker for several days and not had to charge it yet. There is also a USB port so you can charge your phone from the speaker. Its only 1 watt according to the specs but, hey, any port in a storm.
The water proof part is really cool and definitely worth the price of admission. Needing to check it out, I dunked, well, really threw, this speaker in my hot tub, it floated back to the top and continued to work just fine. The fabric covering took a few minutes to dry completely but feel confident setting this pool side and not having to worry about it getting splashed.
Overall, I am impressed with this speaker and recommend it to anyone looking for decent sound in a totally water proof housing.

Always know what’s happening at your door with the SimpliSafe Video Doorbell Pro. Its crystal-clear 1080p HD video and 162° field of view give you a clear shot of your property 24/7. Two-way audio lets you hear and speak to unwanted guests (and welcomed ones too) - even when you're not home. Have the SimpliSafe App? The Video Doorbell Pro will send instant alerts whenever someone approaches. And with Smart Person Detection, it can tell the difference between people, vehicles and animals. That means you only get the alerts that matter. Plus, when backed by 24/7 professional monitoring, you’ll have experts who are ready to request emergency dispatch when you need it most. This camera is designed for all weather extremes—so you're still protected in rain and snow. (Compatible with the SimpliSafe Gen 3 security system. Requires Wi-Fi (2.4GHz) and existing wired doorbell setup with mechanical chime and a transformer with 8-24 VAC, 30VA max. Not compatible with digital chimes.)

Can you use this without a doorbell transformer or chime box connected? I am wondering if Google mini or Echo can work as alternative for a chime/notification since Simplisafe now integrates with Google Assistant and Alexa.

No, this is a wired doorbell button and gets its power from the doorbell transformer.
