Capture vibrant videos and images with this Sony telephoto lens. Internal optical SteadyShot image stabilization helps deliver clear handheld shots, and the internal AF mechanism operates silently during movie recording for reduced noise interference. This Sony telephoto lens boasts two ED glass and two aspherical elements for high optical performance across the zoom range.

Entry level telephoto

I am used to shooting a Canon 50D with a 70-200mm f/2.8 lens. This lens is more like a telephoto kit lens, similar to the Canon starter lenses.
It gives more reach for long photos, and better compression to shoot portraits at 200mm. It doesn't have the speed of high end lenses for shooting sports. I would also note that the f/stops of this lens doesn't lend itself to low light photography.
A decent lens for the price, but don't expect the stars on a flashlight budget.

What's great about it: Inexpensive and gives you the extra reach or better portrait compression
What's not so great: Not super fast focus and not good for low light
I would recommend this to a friend!

Similar to a DSLR, but smaller

I have shot with Canon DSLR cameras for years, primarily the 20D and 50D. I was looking for something that was more portable and lighter, without sacrificing a great deal.
The kit lens, and the telephoto 210mm is what I would expect from a Rebel kit lens. If I stay with the Alpha line, I may eventually took for a 70-200mm f/2.8 lens that will pickup more light and focus faster.
The time from power on, until it is ready to shoot is about 2.5 seconds. This is an eternity if it is an action shot. It will wake from sleep more quickly though.
The autofocus speed is decent. It does a good job in low light compared to P&S cameras. I intend to give it a little more exercise with a 50mm f/1.8 and see how it compares.
If you want more than a P&S, but can live without through the lens, this is a good camera.
