Economical Windows Tablet that Over-Delivers
on December 17, 2016

Verified Purchase:Yes
I purchased this tablet about a month ago after my primary laptop crashed while on business travel. Even though the Geek Squad was able to fix the laptop, I wanted a tablet that I could take in its stead to avoid any future problems. The challenges: (1) I not only use MS Office, but Adobe Photoshop as well, because I do book editing and layout and some graphic design. So, I decided I wanted a Windows OS tablet. (2) I only had a $200-ish budget. (3) I wanted the option of a keyboard, but ability to use the device as a straight tablet.
The Insignia 11.7" tablet with 32GB RAM fit the bill...EXCEPT, the salesman warned me that it would not be able to run multiple programs at once, and especially not Photoshop.
I'm happy to say that he was wrong. I installed the free trial of Adobe Creative Suite, installed an extra 400+ fonts, and subscribed MS Office 360 with all of it being downloaded onto the internal memory. I am able to work on multi-layer files in Photoshop while having Microsoft Word open from which to copy text. I purchased a high speed 32GB micro SD card to use as my extra data "storage device" and have had an excellent experience this far. Sure, it's not super-fast, but it gets the job done, and keeps me from possibly damaging my primary laptop with all of the jostling during travel.
I appreciate how easily the tablet connects/disconnects from the keyboard and the small amount of space it takes up in my carry-on. The screen is wider than most tablets, which is exceptionally nice for watching movies. The keyboard has two USB 2.0 PORTS that will handle a flash drive (I use 128GB flash drives) but will NOT power a portable drive. The tablet itself has the microSD slot as well as a microHDMI slot. With the cables I carry, I can connect the tablet to a flat screen TV in the hotel rooms to either use as an expanded desktop monitor or to watch Netflix or YouTube in style. I will say that you will want to use a wireless mouse with this if you are are trying for productivity as the mousepad can be quite jumpy at times. In full tablet mode, the touch screen is fairly responsive, though a little quirky times.
So far, this tablet has over performed and over delivered compared to what the salesperson said it would do. I'm extremely satisfied. I believe I got lots of bang for my budget!

Is there an onscreen (touchpad) keyboard, or do you have to use the external one?

There are both a touchscreen keyboard and the detachable keyboard.

Why is this tablet only $200 when other tablets of similar size memory and operating systems are $400-$500 dollars more? I would like to just shrug it off as its not as well know of a brand but it seems too cheap. Am i missing something?

I asked the same question when I bought mine. The sales rep explained that Insignia is Best Buy's store brand and they can build the units at a relatively inexpensive cost. He assured me that the parts were all from name brand suppliers. You are simply not paying for the "NAME". I've only had mine for a month as of this writing, but have had good success (see my review for more details).

can i access i tunes, type papers ,hook up to a printer to this device

You can type documents without any problem. The tablet includes Notepad and WordPad, however you can install MS Word, OpenOffice, or other Windows-based word processing applications of your choice. Yes, you can print from this tablet, either via USB port, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. As far as iTunes, I'm not an iTunes user, but there should be no problem downloading it unless it requires larger system requirements.

Will this run Adobe Acrobat Reader or Pro?

Yes, it will run either one. I have Adobe Reader DC installed, as well as the Adobe Creative Cloud, which includes Pro.

Would this work for a kids first one. Netflix, youtube, Microsoft app games, and regular pc version of minecraft is what he plays. thanks

In my opinion, this would be a great first tablet for children who are responsible enough to not frequently drop or throw it. It works great for Netflix and YouTube, as the screen is bigger/wider than many of the other tablets. It has Windows 10 installed along with the Windows App Store App for downloading games. I'm not certain what the system requirements are for Minecraft specifically, so I can't speak to that.

Can i plug a mouse directly on it? or do i have to use a powered USB HUB and plug the mouse on a HUB?

You can plug a mouse directly into the keyboard while it is attached to the Tablet. The main Tablet body does not have a USB port, but the keyboard has 2 USB ports, allowing you to use a mouse and, say, a flash drive at the same time.

Does this work with google docs?

Yes, this works with Google Docs, which is now accessed through Google Drive; however, unlike on an Android device, there is no Drive App to use as an interface, rather, you will access Drive through your browser of choice.

If you are uncertain as to how to do so, log into your Gmail account, click the square made up of 9 tiny squares at the top right side of your Gmail page, then tap on the Drive icon. It's easy and you'll have no problems. Once your Google Drive page opens, either find your already saved file or click the Blue "NEW" button at the top left. (See the close-up below.)
