I need to know if keyboards with hinges are detachable keyboards. If I want to type on my lap and have my iPad on the desk is this possible?
Yes. You can take the ipad out of the case and put the ipad within several feet and there will be no issues. There is a standard bluetooth connection between the keyboard/case and the ipad.

Can the iPad Air also fit in this case?
If it can, does it fit snugly/securely? And, do all the cut outs in the case line up correctly so you can easily access the volume buttons, the cable port, speakers, on/off button, etc.?
It will not work for a the original ipad air. The size of the original ipad air is slightly different the buttons are in slightly different locations. So no.
