Sometimes the simplest parts can be the most essential; I could not have added a cable modem without this simple piece. It's well-made and sturdy; cables screw on smoothly.

After years of throwing away money on modem-rental, I finally bought my own some years ago -- wise decision! This is my 3rd Motorola upgrade; I've had great success with every Motorola modem thus far, and this one is no exception. Small and compact (almost too lightweight for stability), the white modem is surprisingly attractive and un-office-machine-looking.
It also pays to go to the trouble of buying and installing separate modem and router units rather than a combination-unit. Performance will be stronger, if one should break, you still have partial functioning... and I've heard horror-stories about set-up and performance-issues with the combined-units.
Set-up of the Surfboard is simple and straightforward. Do be aware that if you are adding a modem to share your cable-TV hookup, you may need a splitter (I bought the Rocketfish™ RF-G1307 2-way coaxial splitter from Best Buy, which works great) and an extra coaxial cable.
As other reviewers have noted, the blue lights on this unit are bright; personally, I rather like them. ;-)
Enjoy high-speed networking with this ASUS Wi-Fi four-port Gigabit router. The 2.4GHz and 5GHz dual-band transmissions enhance signal strength, and the Gigabit Ethernet ports deliver reliable performance. This ASUS Wi-Fi four-port Gigabit router has two built-in USB ports for printer, file and 3G sharing, and the download master enables wireless data storage.

Asus makes great routers! This is my 2nd one, bought for my vacation home, in combination with a Motorola - Arris SURFboard 600 Series DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modem - White, when I upgraded our service from DSL to cable. Comcast was recommending a combination modem-router; but after reading and hearing horror-stories about setup and performance issues, I opted to take the extra steps and install separate components -- a wise decision!
Combination modem-router means lowest-common-denominator performance. This way, I get Asus performance and reliability (both top-notch), plus continued operation if either component breaks down.
Set-up of this router is a breeze and takes very little time: attach the antennae and the cables, plug in, and go online -- the Asus website comes up automatically and walks you through configuration, even admin-settings and password protection.
My only criticism of this router is that one antenna fit a bit loosely and wanted to shift positions. Not enough to matter.
