the door does not stay engaged to allow the microwave to operate. when the door is closed and a cook time is selected, the door has to be held closed for the duration of the cook time to function. If the door is not held closed, the microwave goes into a paused state and the fan runs, but the microwave doesn't work.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Only got close to 3 years of less than normal use out of her. Home warranty insurance wouldn't even repair because they claimed it was arcing. I never saw this. Now it's just an over range paperweight. No more GE products for us.
