Maintenance needs to be more user friendly

We purchased this microwave to replace a GE Profile that only lasted 6 years. We chose this model in the hopes that the control panel being stationary rather than in the door would increase longevity. We shall see. Off the bat I am not happy about 2 things. The difficulty of reaching the activated charcoal filter....removing 3 screws and sliding the panel while standing in a step stool? Not very user friendly. Also, I opened the light fixture immediately because I thought one of the lights had blown out because it looked like there should have been two, but there was only one and it was not even a screw in bulb..(,it looked like there was a hole for one,) but the manufacturer used some cheapie little pronged plug that looks cheap and is not very bright. I would not call this a surface light, but more of a night light. It is like cooking by a cheap night light. Come on. I know this is not your premium model, but come on. My kitchen is dark and I need a brighter light. I like the fact that this unit is simewhat smaller , giving more space for taller pots . I like the shorter door because we have a small kitchen and the long door of the Profile always felt awkward. I hope this one lasts longer than the last one. I would be much happier if the surface light was brighter and you didn't have to unscrew 3 screws to change the filter. It would also be helpful not to need a screw driver to change the light bulb.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Noisy when working. Stopped working after less than 2 years and did not get used for 8 of those months. Appearance okay. When it was working it worked fine.

Nice over the range microwave

This microwave is my 3rd GE microwave. I like everything about except that it requires a new lower mounting bracket and the upper support screws are in a different location. As an engineer, I see no reason for the lower mounting bracket change. The upper mounting hole location may be necessary from an engineering perspective. The changes tend to turn your wall and cupboard into Swiss Cheese.

Meh - it's okay - I don't expect it to last

It's okay. I'm a bit jaded, I guess, because I'm replacing a 36" microwave and have to use the filler kit. The original one had a 10-year (!) warranty on the magnetron tube (or something like that). It failed at 9.5 years and because I had the original manual that showed the warranty (and I had written the date on the book), GE replace it with the exact same model, no problem. They even installed it and took away the old one.
The replacement (exact same model) had a 5-year warranty, and lasted about 7.5 years. Not bad...wishing for that 10-year warranty!
Anyway, they don't make 36" models anymore (we have a 36" cooktop), so you have to buy a filler kit (in our case, JX36BBB for black). The filler kit cost MORE than the microwave from Home Depot - the only place I could find it in stock. They don't look great. They come out to the edge of the metal on the microwave, not to the front plastic piece. So, they don't look like they belong there. They look like what they are - a poor resolution to the problem that there are no longer 36" microwaves available. I'll attach some pictures.
They also are only 1000W now. I'm not sure why they stopped making 1100W models. And, this model doesn't have the night-light feature. We used that, so I'm sorry to see it was not included. There is only a single bulb, too, but it can be upgraded to 50W. Still, the others were two bulbs spread out a bit, so you got even light below on the cook top.
By the way, the new (3rd) microwave only has a 1-year warranty. That tells you the confidence level they have in their own products. I feel the same because this new one weighs about 1/2 to 2/3 of the old one. Some of that is 30" vs. 36", but even with the filler panels on, it's considerably lighter than the old one. That's just quality of the parts, I suspect.

I'm still learning all the features, but I especially love the add 30 seconds and express cook. It seems to be a solid well built microwave and does what I need. I'm just a basic microwave person. I'm sure it does so much more than I will ever use.
