For a simple, basic return seems pretty good It is not worth the extra money to get the "enhanced" software versions. There isn't more help or explanation, just more topics... you are on your own to figure out how to use it or what content to include. Long gone are the days of the talking "help" heads videos. Needs more links, references and real help.
What's great about it: fairly easy to use
What's not so great: help is terrible - clicking on more help gives a few more words describing the subject nothing else
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I moved, I bought or sold investments
I was using the Home & Business Turbo Tax. I waited until the last minute this year to file and got pretty frustrated with some of the items. One of those was the vehicle trade-in Alternative Minimum Tax. When I was putting in the vehicle information, it was impossible to figure out (for me, anyway) how to calculate this. We had bought a car in 1999, but didn't put it into service for our business until 2011, so trying to figure out what to put in the box for depreciation, etc. was horrible. I went to the Turbo Tax help on their web site & one person had an answer and said to look for the vehicle summary and edit the trade-in info. They wanted info about the trade-in and not the car we're using now. It just didn't make sense to me. I never could find that particular page in Turbo Tax & there were several other people with the same problem on their web site. I wish TurboTax would state things more clearly by saying in plain English the IRS tax directions. It doesn't help me when errors come up & they show the IRS form with the error on it instead of telling you how to correct the error. They state what the problem is, but don't say how to fix it. The simple stuff that the IRS asks for is a breeze to fill in using Turbo Tax. It's only when you get into the complicated stuff that makes it so frustrating. Otherwise, Turbo Tax is okay. I've used it for several years and it seems like I get stuck on the same things every year and Turbo Tax hasn't figured out how to simplify the complicated stuff. I always go back to Turbo Tax because I figure that other programs might not be as good as Turbo Tax & I didn't want to spend the money & find that out the hard way.
What's great about it: Helps you through the whole process with the forms & e-filing
What's not so great: Some info is too confusing.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)
TurboTax is fast, easy and thorough. It has been part of my personal tax preparation efforts for more than 15 years. It provides excellent tax information that helps taxpayers/small businesses understand tax implications and make better financial decisions.
What's great about it: Step by step explanation based tax preparation
What's not so great: On-line ordering of State Tax filing software can be improved to avoid mistakenly purchasing same State.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments
I love this software to death! It seems like it gets cheaper every single year between the software cost, the first state add-on, the e-file fee(s), and cost for audit-protection!
I've always used TurboTax since 2008, it has never failed me once, always catches errors (if any), and has consistently gotten me more money for the exact same things than coworkers who don't use TurboTax and my wife whose dad is a CPA.
In 2012, after massive paycuts, I started my first year working from home to generate commission sales / calls / phone-repairs to bring in business to/for my employer's main store location (who then pays me) - so I took the leap and tried filing "Itemized" --- TurboTax opened my eyes! I did not know how much of what I legitimately spend my own money on for work is deductible since my employer does not reimburse me nor pay me for time I work sales at home! TurboTax took the huge amount of tension out of what I thought would be a painstaking process to file itemized.
If you value your money and work full-time, you probably earned the good ol' Government a hefty paycheck off of your own hard earned money!... SO GET BACK WHAT IS TRULY YOURS! JUST GET TURBOTAX NOW! (Seriously!)
What's great about it: Easy as heck, takes the headache out of filing itemized, free e-filing, & got $910 more than my family's CPA calculated!
What's not so great: Some itemized descriptions for "Explain This" are WAY too vague to help. 2 Errors b/c $0 =/= [blank]
