For some reason Turbo Tax NEVER recognizes my husband's retirement plan on the Kansas state taxes.Every time I've used it, I've had to go back into the forms and manually enter the correct amount. We each have money going into a retirement system, mine being KPERS on my W-2, his being KF on his. The program only recognizes my amount for additions to Kansas income, and if I don't manually correct it, it files the amount incorrectly. The only reason I know this is because we were scolded by the state and had to pay more money the first time it happened. Now i actually look for it, but shouldn't have to, since that amount is in the W-2 information that I enter, and I am paying for a tax program to do the math for us.
What's great about it: Detailed and leads you through everything.
What's not so great: Too many charges for filing state taxes
Easy to fill out but error check brings you to the actual forms, schedules and subsections which are difficult to understand as there is no guidance or explanation at that point
What's great about it: Easy to fill and some explaination
What's not so great: error check solutions difficult as no explanation on how to fill
If you use Quicken, using TurboTax is even easier to use. You can electronically transmit information from Quicken about income and expenses into TurboTax. If you use Turbo Tax for the first time this year, then when you use Turbo Tax next year it will even be easier because Turbo Tax allows you to copy your prior year information into the new years Turbo Tax. Even though I have used Turbo Tax for a decade, I still like to use the follow the guide function so that I don't miss any tax rule changes. They say death and taxes are inevitable, well so are yearly changes to the tax codes. Without Turbo Tax doing the research for me, I would have to spend many, many long hours reading the IRS publications. I like many dislike doing taxes, and don't think that people should have to employ a "Certified Public Accountant" to get our taxes done. Without Turbo Tax, I would be using a CPA.
It seems as the years go on, I've been using turbo tax since 2001 that the tax code just keeps getting more convoluted. It took me 12 hours to do my taxes this time which was the longest time it's ever taken me. I always wait until the April 15th because I hate the IRS and don't want to give them a cent of my money a day too soon since I am self employed.
What's great about it: Fairly easy to input your totals once you get your box of receipts organized.
What's not so great: Only had a problem with gas overriding royalty interest it kept wanting to put it on schedule c rather than schedule e
