I have been using Turbo Tax for many years and have not had any trouble using it. This year I had a little different situation and pulled money from an IRA. Problem is the system didnt catch that I entered the withholding for the distribution in two spots. Exact same number, I guess you have to make sure you look for things that dont add up. Its probably my fault for not reading the clear instructions as to what to enter where.
What's great about it: The program does look at all options available for deductions
What's not so great: The program didnt notice that I had entered tax withheld twice
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments
Overall the best out there. The detail in business Sch C is a bit overwhelming, but manageable. The auto section is bit redundant and could be improved.
What's great about it: got thru the return faster than ever
Wasn't intuitive when entering 1099-MISC for my spouse's contract work; at times confusing when looking at things like mortgage deduction that didn't match 1098s but ultimately realized some was allocated to home office deduction, etc.
I also seemed to struggle with updating items in previous sections - didn't always appear to catch updates correctly - but ultimately got through and appeared correct.
But on the whole I like using TurboTax and plan on using again next year.
What's great about it: Excellent UI & seemed complete
What's not so great: Going back to update items seemed confusing at times
I've used Turbo Tax for at least 6 years now. The way the IRS wins every game is by changing the rules all the time. Turbo Tax helps keep up with all the changes. They offer support if you need it, but the software makes getting it done easy.
Why wait till the last minute to file? Cause I don't want to give them an extra dime before I have to. Turbo Tax lets me file on the 15th and still gets it done!
What's great about it: Turbo Tax makes it possible to file your own return
What's not so great: It could be clearer what standard deductions are made
Both customer service rep and CPA agreed to submit discrepancy report ticket to make entering next year's number more straightforward. Also self-employment tax interview questions were confusing and potentially caused me to overpay. Also payment feature didn't work for the fourth year in a row. Thanks for the free download, state filing and audit defense.
What's great about it: Turbo Tax CPA helped with flaws in form
What's not so great: Fellowship questions are misleading and need to be tricked
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)
