There is nothing fun about preparing taxes, but TurboTax takes some of the drudgery out of the process. It plugs in so much information from past returns that it "knows" how to guide you through the process, while offering helpful advice. Combine that with importing information from QuickBooks and the process was fast. I expected to have to rearrange and re-categorize my schedule C, but TurboTax had already correctly assigned the miscellaneous line items I use in QuickBooks to help track my business, based on previous year's returns. I appreciate being able to compare the previous year's number in every category. It makes it easy to see common errors #like a decimal point in the wrong place#, right away. Since I tend to put off taxes as long as I can, I always appreciate that TurboTax usually takes less time than I'm expecting and I finish with time to spare.
What's great about it: Simple to use and navigate
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)
I have used TurboTax (Home and Small Business) on the web for many years, ever since the year the IRS did not get its act together and the stand alone versions ended up with errors due to last minute IRS changes. However, each year, the delay between screens on the web version are getting longer and longer. (Intuit needs a larger cloud!) This year was intolerable, so I went back to the standalone version. Purchased it online from Intuit. It downloaded and installed without a glitch. And then it got an update patch from Intuit. I thought, here we go again. But it updated without a glitch and the completion of my very long business and personal tax return went off without a glitch. So, back to the standalone version from now on.
We have a lot of depletion deductions on royalties, it is cumbersome to input sometimes. If you want to go back and review your K-1 entry it takes time.
What's great about it: Ease of entry
What's not so great: K-1 Entry if you have a lot of K-1s hard to get back to check them
