Can't file state
on February 6, 2014

Turbotax will no let me print by state return for filing. It only give the option to print preview, save as PDF or cancel. If I try to do a work-around and print the pdf, it has DO NOT FILE shaded in.
What's not so great: Can't file the state and can't contact anybody.

Turbo Tax 2013 Home and Business Review
on December 6, 2014

Turbo tax is a great product but is aimed more for someone who has very little understanding of tax requirements which although is fine for the average wage earner return ends up being too simplified and too focused on interview mode for a business owner. In addition a number of threads during the interview mode are geared towards the wage earner trying to squeeze more deductions out their return rather than designed to help the small business owner get directly to the deduction they are legally able to claim. The business vehicle deduction section is very clumsy to navigate through for anyone but doubly so for a legitimate business with quite a few questions being inconsistent with business use deductions for an actual business. I was able to finally get it correct but had to try all variations of answers before the correct business uses of a vehicle deduction was able to be calculated.
I can readily understand how this would be the case if the TTax 2013 product used was the simple TTAX version but this is unacceptable in the home and business version where many of the deduction paths are intermingled for personal and business despite being in the business only thread. Intuit needs to look more closely at its TTAX home and business decision tree to ensure that when in the business thread ONLY business deductions are offered and when in the personal thread only personal deductions are eligible. I understand that some personal tax returns can have business expense deductions but those deductions are most often different than the a legitimate business deduction.
What's great about it: very thorough
What's not so great: not easy to use outside of interview mode
Pros: I bought or sold investments

I finished my personal returns and had to upgrade to Business edition for and estate filing. Since I had to buy a second edition I should have got a second state with it but I didn't. Unfair.
What's great about it: Did excellent job overall
What's not so great: Had to buy upgrade but did not include 2nd state
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Not Best for Deceased Individual
on December 15, 2014

I've used Turbo Tax for over 30 years. As far as I'm concerned, it is, and always has been, the absolute best tax preparation software available to consumers on the market.
But this year I had to prepare and file my deceased mother's tax return for 2013. While the software automatically provided Form 1310-Statement of Person Claiming Refund Due a Deceased Taxpayer, It did not show complete instructions for the form. Nor did it provide instructions for filing the return to make up for the information omitted. As a result, I received a notice from the IRS asking for additional information.
While I'm sure 99% of Turbo Tax users are not preparing tax returns for deceased taxpayers, if the software holds itself out as being able to complete such a return, then it should be thorough in explaining all the requirements for Form 1310, which I admit are very confusing, now that I have printed off a copy of the form from the IRS website. At a minimum, there should be a disclaimer statement on the Filing Instructions sheet, with reference to sources of further information that should be consulted.
Additionally, I did not find much, if any, guidance in completing income and deduction forms for deceased taxpayers. An good example is Income in Respect of Decedent (IRD). When the Taxpayer information is gathered at the very beginning of the tax preparation software, and the box for DECEASED has been checked, then preparation instructions that follow in either the step-by-step or individual completion sections should be modified to address the topics relevant to the deceased status.
Any other year, my rating would have been a 4 or 5.
What's great about it: Ability to review and complete individual sections of tax return instead of using the step-by-step method
What's not so great: Not well suited to returns for deceased individuals

Online 1099 filing doesn't work, manual stinks
on January 29, 2014

I was not able to use the online tool for creating and filing 1099s, so I tried the manual version. It has no means to print individual 1099 pdf files to email to my subs, or to send to the IRS.
Boo.

I've been using this program since 1997 and during that time I've recommended it to many of my family and friends who do their own taxes. I don't see myself using, or even trying, any other tax program in the near future. Thank you to Intuit for "Turbo Tax"!
What's great about it: Thoroughness, Audit Alerts & Audit Defense
What's not so great: None

Desktop version is SLOW
on December 29, 2014
Posted by: mattsilbert
I'm downloaded "TurboTax Home & Business 2013" for use on a Mac running OS 10.7.5 (with 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5 processor and 4 GB of memory.)
I've never seen any software run this slowly on this computer. Every click or entry resulting the proverbial spinning beach ball for several seconds.
What's great about it: got the job done
What's not so great: slow

Turbo tax is user-friendly and comprehensive. I have used the product for several consecutive years and I get a consistently great experience. I especially like the guidance through the possible deductions.
What's great about it: User friendly; Guidance, reminders, and importing from previous year are great.
What's not so great: No cons...
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)
