great program, it's been helpful with rentals, regular income and a small business. There have been difficult times and sometimes you pay the price for not have a professional doing your taxes, I mean having to look question up on your our or read the IRS website. would recommend to anybody with rentals or small business.
What's great about it: carries over previous years info
What's not so great: Doesn't enter this years info for you
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)
I have used Turbo Tax for several years. This year was the most confusing. I entered my business expenses then personal. In the personal section, it asked again for my 1099 information and my business information. I checked for answers and got two with opposite recommendations. I definitely did not want to add in 1099s twice.
When I did a review, I had two business at same address. I deleted one business. It also took me over an hour to figure out how to remove an untitled 1099. I had to find it because I could not proceed with E-filing.
The questions regarding mileage for business was confusing. The question asked if i wanted to put in total mileage for the year or business miles, I choose business miles only. During the review I was informed I neede the mileage fo the entire year. I had to estimate a figure based on the last three years mileage.
During the review I was also informed I needed to check one of the At Risk boxes. I was stumped! the Explaination was confusing, I didn't study income taxes. Again I took a stab and chose one.
A bit more explaination on these two items might be of some help. If I had a problem with these, others may also.
What's great about it: mostly clear and understandable
What's not so great: a couple of items were a bit confusing
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)
I will only use Turbotax - it's what I've been using for 12 years already. I just wish that more of the previous year would transfer, such as ALL my previous typed descriptions, and other oddball things. It would be PARTICULARLY helpful if the business Net Operating Loss would automatically carry forward -- or at least if the program would ASK you if you wanted to carry it forward again. That's my beef. But I wouldn't use another tax program.
What's great about it: transfers previous years easily, good hints
What's not so great: noticeably different every year - good and bad
