Dealing with capital gains, ordinary gains, and publicly traded LLCs with complicated depreciation issues was not easy.
What's great about it: Great on simple stuff
What's not so great: Even Home and Business isn't great with complicated issues
Pros: I bought or sold investments

I have used many tools to prepare taxes and I still think used TurboTax is the simplest. I have used TurboTax for over 10 years.
What's great about it: ease of use
What's not so great: not enough information to understand deductions

One of the most timesaving features is the transfering if information from the previous year to the current year!
What's great about it: Turbo Tax ia aimply the best software out there in making the very distastful task of tax time into a very simple task!
What's not so great: Other than having to pay this year I cant think of a single thing.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments

clear step-by-step guidance

Clear instructions throughout the process.
A few user-interface changes would simply user experience:
Allowing users to sort lists would make TurboTax easier to use. E.g., allow sorting lists alphabetically, e.g., names of charities, to aid reusing names from prior years.
Another example: Dividend Income Summary screen lists values are listed by "Broker or Payer" -- some payers list individual fund names separately, so they appear scattered throughout the list, making it difficult to check one 1099-DIV form at a time (which includes all the funds from a single payer, even if listed as separate items). It would help to have a way to group the funds by payer, i.e., as they appear together on a 1099-DIV. This should be available automatically from 1099-DIV information imported from the payer via the internet.
After importing multiple 1099-DIV forms, TurboTax asks for the state that paid tax exempt dividends. The dialog lists the name of the fund but not the firm from which it was imported. Different firms can have similar names for tax-free funds. So this makes it difficult to be sure which fund the dialog is asking about.
The "Tell Us More About Your Exempt Dividends" asks for dollar amounts for each state. Payers send a form listing percentage of dividends from each state. To simplify entry, provide an option to enter percentage rather than dollar amount. Also the "More Than One State" menu item would be clearer as "Other States" or "Remaining States".
Similarly, provide a percentage option for "Enter U.S. Government Interest" for the amount of dividend that is interest from US Govt.
These sorting and percentage calculation tasks are tedious for users, and possibly lead to mistaken entries. But easy for computers. That TurboTax doesn't provide such user aids is a minor annoyance on an otherwise very helpful product.
What's great about it: easy-to-follow process
What's not so great: long lists of items, such as charities, are tedious to navigate

I have been using Intuit products over 15 years, both Quicken & TurboTax.
In the beginning auto-renewal was cost effective, however the last few years, I have watched as you began to give TurboTax way as my costs to auto-renew have been going up annual.
This will be my LAST year to auto-renew TurboTax.
What's great about it: Ease of use
What's not so great: Auto-renewal costs

ca Form 3800
on March 2, 2014

CA Form 3800 is kiddie tax. You have to link parent returns and all child returns together to get answers. TT does not do this at all. A lot of manula work doing multiple returns, never finishing them. then going back, collecting the info for Form 3800 and having to manually enter data. Then go back and finish all returns. Wish t had a better way. Also no help links on the info page.
What's great about it: Gives you the state forms.
What's not so great: Does not prefill or link info well.
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Suggestion for Charitable Deductions
on March 2, 2014
Posted by: Roadmaster
from Columbia, MD
Please alphabetize the list of institutions getting charitable deductions. Its great to have the list from the previous year, but its hard to go through this year's deductions and line them up with the list from last year when the order is arbitrary.
What's great about it: Easier than ever
What's not so great: Charitable deductions could be easier
