I have been using Turbo Tax for several years and have been mostly satisfied until this year.
This year's version seemed buggy. For example, the income and expenses of one of our businesses didn't consistently show up in the Turbo Tax program even though the entries were on the tax form.
The simplified safe harbor method home office deduction also seemed buggy. My business showed a profit, but the software wouldn't let us take the deduction because it said the business did not show a profit -- even though the business did show a profit. It did, however, allow us itemize each home office expense and count those.
The last problem I had was that we switched to accrual accounting this past year in one of our businesses, and Turbo Tax just doesn't seem equipped to handle that.
It looks like next year we will be looking for different tax preparation software both because I think we've outgrown Turbo Tax and because the quality of the product has decreased.
Sort of sad to have to say goodbye to tax prep software that we've used successfully and without incident for nearly a decade.
What's great about it: Still Quicker and Easier than Filing Manually
What's not so great: This year's Turbo Tax Seemed Buggy
Why even say it will be just 1 min to do an update when it takes 5 - 7 minutes? When it is calculating some of the credits, etc. it hung up on me, went into "Not Responding", but I couldn't even get it to close with the Task Manager a couple of times. It happened more than once on the college credits on my son's return. It added an hour to my work! I was SO frustrated! We almost skipped that section, but I knew it would mean money for him and it sure did! Changed from owing over $100 to getting back almost $100. For a 23 year old, that's real money!
What's great about it: I like the way it asks the questions, so I understand them!
What's not so great: It is SLOW to update and SLOW to calculate from time to time.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)
Aside from the unusual circumstance of having donated a car to charity, everything else in TurboTax went smoothly as in prior years. However, after entering the 1098-C information from the form that had been mailed to me, it was odd that on the "review", TurboTax told me I had NOT indicated having a 1098-C (I had). It then had me fill out all the 1098-C information AGAIN. It also had me enter the donee address information another time as well. Then after entering that, on another review page, it kept saying I had not received a 1098-C (even though I had, and had so indicated). This part, as well as the indication that I must physically mail a copy of the 1098-C to the IRS were confusing and a bit confounding compared to prior years. Better up-front description regarding this lacking in the IRS e-filing system, as well as better integration of the entry of the 1098-C are necessary to bring that aspect of the program suite up to par with the remainder of what I usually find to be an excellent tool. I was also ever so slightly annoyed at the increase in the cost of filing the state return. (Given that electronic filing makes it EASIER for the states to process and to check, the additional fee should be coming from paper filing . . .)
What's great about it: TurboTax continues to be easy to use, in general
What's not so great: Having to enter the car donation information from the 1098-C twice or three times was annoying
I have depended on TurboTax for about 25 years. This year I used the Mac version for the first time. The interface is consistent and all the files transferred seamlessly. This is important as my wife has a business and some items are depreciated over many years. Once again I was able to complete the returns with a minimum of fuss. Great job, Intuit!
What's great about it: Consistent interface. Easy to use and carry forward information from year to year.
can not continue to next page without answering questions again, should be able to just page through after the questions were answered the first time, edit if i need to.
