Tried TurboTax. Going back to H&R Block at Home.
on April 13, 2014

I tried TurboTax for my 2013 taxes because H&R Block at Home didn't offer a Mac version that included Business. But I'll go back to H&R Block at home next year if I can.
H&R Block was much more helpful explaining tax terms and other information helpful when filling out the tax forms.
Also, the TurboTax "EasySteps" interface was very buggy. There were a number of instances where I entered a value and had to change it but either a) it was stuck on the previous value or b) it appeared to be changed but looking at the "Forms" showed that it wasn't really changed.
It's hard to believe such bugs are present in software meant for filing taxes.
What's great about it: Flags
What's not so great: Not much explanation. Buggy Software
Form 1099-R should be much easier to report the correct information. I have a pension plan, inherited from my husband, with no RMD required. I did answer the question that I do receive 12 monthly payments a year. I did go to Turbo Help but did not see the questions I was told I would receive. "Tell us more about this retirement plan distribution" and "I was not required to take an RMD for 2013".
Please make an adjustment before I need to file my 2014 return.
What's great about it: For the most part Turbo is very easy to use.
Did not provide deduction other than Fed standard @ $888. Gave the impression that the # had not been released? (but not to worry as TurboTax would update later ???)
** I would like the capability to print out the current screen I may need for next year
What's not so great: Sales tax deduction (State?) - not provided, only Fed. standard=$888
Easy to use, very intuitive for a first time user like me. I was nervous but the software walked me thru it beautifully and the help button provided more guidance. It's a great software and got me more refund than I expected!
What's great about it: Very intuitive and got the Max refund compared to what my CPA did last year and this year.
What's not so great: State e-filing fee should have been included when you purchase software
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)
Have used Turbo Tax for several years and one year went to a tax CPA. Had to do all of the same work prior and paid the professional more to do what I did in one afternoon. (including the optional post support service). Wished the tax code would get this simple.
What's great about it: After changing employers for a few years and getting new roles with nice promotions, it made it so much simplier to file
What's not so great: The edits are sometimes a little hard to understand what it needs
