MISSING RMD REQUEST
on March 15, 2014
Posted by: CDCRW
from Iola, Texas
My birthdate was entered correctly as 11/29/1939 however, TurboTax "reminded me" that I am "approaching" retirement age and then should make my RMD - well I am already 74 years old and have used TurboTax for years in the past. Please correct this calculation for your next issue or provide an update.
Thank you
What's great about it: Very good response / solution to my questions on the phone
What's not so great: Turbo\Tax does not compute my age correctly
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

I have 2 retirement accounts, my wife has one plus wages. We also have a small business. This year I inherited some money which had been drawing interest. Nevertheless filing with Turbotax was quick and easily understandable. In fact, if I had been a little neater with recordkeeping I could probably have done the whole thing in4 hours.
What's not so great: the requirement to put a unique nickname on this thing is a pain in the butt. One more try and I'll quit.

I did the easy family members first and e-filed them. The harder ones I had to print off to file.
What's great about it: Able to catch all deductions
What's not so great: Did not notify me that all I got was 5 e-files

So Easy to Use

I love Turbo Tax. I have been using it for many years. I did have an issue this year with the State Program during my 2nd Tax Filing (for my daughter). The State program processed all the forms using the federal data, but did not walk me through the questions automatically for my daughters file, like it did for my file. I had to manually ask it to review the State forms before I could get it to do this. Because of this, I reduced the 5 star rating to 4.
What's great about it: So Easy to use
What's not so great: Had some issues with the State Program when I started my 2nd tax file
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments

Married to a Non-Resident Alien
on March 15, 2014

When you are married to someone who has not yet been granted their immigration visa to the USA, they do not have any legal status here - so they don't have a Social Security Number.
IRS allows you to file a Married Filing Separately using the code NRA in the SSN field, but Turbo Tax does not allow the entry of anything but numbers. Very frustrating experience.
Turbo Tax needs to allow the NRA code and then restrict the filing to File By Mail only, which is the requirement.
What's great about it: Easy to enter the data into the federal and state forms
What's not so great: Cannot enter the proper code for my non-resident alien spouse in the forms, tells me I need to correct errors!!!
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

just few things

1. "Do you have children?" - Should be "Do you have dependents?" because I do have children, adult ones.
2. "Which of the forms was included ..." - Why this question? Just look into my 2012 file which was already imported.
3. It comes back every year. "Check for updates" in the middle of tax report transmission. And after that, it throws me back to the beginning of the filing section to repeat all questions I already answered. Kind of stupid!
What's great about it: great improvement since the last year
What's not so great: few things still to be improved
