As long as a taxpayer has all their information and knows how to enter their data, TurboTax is very reliable in making all the necessary calculations. TurboTax is very good in trying to make sure a taxpayer takes advantage of what they are entitled to.
What's great about it: Reliance on accuracy; Having up to date forms, etc.

I've done my personal taxes for years but started using TurboTax a couple of years ago. Actually, my daughter entered the figures in the software program for me the last 2 years. She's a CPA so had no problem understanding the prompts of the program. Unfortunately for me, she moved and told me to try it myself. I was not as quick as she was, but for the most part didn't have any trouble, except for entering a 1099 Miscellaneous Income form. For some reason, I needed to enter the income as a business gain or loss on Schedule C, even though the money was earned as part of my retirement package. Since none of the descriptions for this income fit my actual situation, I was quite frustrated in filling out this section. I didn't know anything about filing tax forms for a business, and definitely didn't know the type of accounting method or business code my former employer used. In addition, the form is quite lengthy because of business expenses that are deductible. When I finally went to file the completed federal tax return, I kept getting error messages because of Schedule C, so I had to go back to correct the form. I finally just guessed at which boxes to check, and then tried to e-file my tax form again. Once more, the program wouldn't let me pass because of another error, so I went back and checked different boxes. This took me several tries and a few hours before the TurboTax program said I had the form filled out correctly. However, I'm still not sure if Schedule C is really correct for my particular situation or if I just checked the right boxes that went together with the prompts. Time will tell.
What's great about it: Easy to file, easy to save a copy of completed tax forms.
What's not so great: Some prompts are confusing if you have a unique situation: no live help center
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Not overly impressed

I thought this years TT was more difficult to follow than in previous years. Fewer explanations for state tax information, Also a very big glitch with calculation of state return. TT recommended switching filing status to increase return. After switching, the refund amount ended up being lower than the previous lower (not recommended) refund. Overall refund amount was lower. Doesn't make any sense. Waiting to file state to see if glitch is fixed. Hopefully soon.
What's great about it: Carried over information from previous year
What's not so great: Poor explanations for some federal and very few good explanations to answer state questions

I love the program! Its only complicated because the IRS makes it so complicated. I was able to get a huge return this year and I feel better knowing I was guided through every possible scenario. Thanks TurboTax!

I have used TurboTax for over 10 years, and I find it to be thorough, fast and accurate. I use TurboTax for my personal and business taxes, and it works well. I also use it for my grown children's taxes, which are more simple, and it works well for all of us.
What's great about it: Thorough, and simple. It puts the tax terms in layman's language, provides multiple sources for research if required.
What's not so great: I don't see any at all
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments
