Easiest way to do taxes short of getting a CPA

I have used TurboTax and Quicken for many years. I find importing from Quicken makes tax filling much easier. I don't miss deductions anymore. I recommend both to anyone who does not have the time track all their finances. I used to spend hours every month balancing the check book and staying on top all the bills. Now I spent less than 30 min. paying bills, balancing my check book is a thing of the past. It takes less than a minute to reconcile my checking account. Can't remember the last time it did not reconcile.
With that said, importing into TurboTax makes inputing data a breeze. I love that TurboTax checks my return for errors before I submit it.
I highly recommend TuroTax.
What's great about it: Eay to use
What's not so great: Tax code is complex and finding all the info you need to enter can be time consuming
Pros: I bought or sold investments

I DID IT!

Thank you TurboTax! I never thought I would be able to do my taxes on my own, but my friend recommended this program and was right. I have fairly complicated taxes due to working in multiple states and I have a ton of write-offs. TurboTax walked me through everything, step by step, and I only got stumped a couple of times. I presume next year it will be easier for me since I have learned a little this year! I started late Sunday night (including itemizing all my deductions) and worked a couple hours every day and finished today (Friday)! Not too bad. Worth the $500 or more I saved not using my accountant. Plus got great Federal and State refunds! I am so proud of myself and so happy to be finished! I did triple check my return and found small mistakes that I had made so do be sure to check and recheck!
What's great about it: Cost less than my accountant
What's not so great: Takes more time
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

state returns

TurboTax essentially forced me to enter health insurance on Schedule C. I do not want it on Sch C. TurboTax would not let me change this.
Also Turbo Tax should recognize Texas does not have a state income tax and cut out the redundant request to do the state income tax return.
What's not so great: unable to change insurance

Excellent and Easy Way to File

I have been using TurboTax for over 10 tears now and have found it to be the best personal software out there. We use the Home and Business version and TorboTax has found us deductions we would have missed otherwise. The price is well worth the savings and peace of mind that I got all the deductions I should.
What's great about it: Detailed walk through of all possible income and deductions
What's not so great: Really nothing

Complete with 1 possibly preventable error

I've used Turbotax last year and in the past to complete and file my own returns. Doing the return myself seems to put a little ease into the whole filing of the taxes. It has been overall a very good program and I will be using it again next year. I think the people at Turbotax work hard to keep up with the ever-changing tax laws. I did specifically struggle for quite a while this year when getting to the "check for errors" section at the end. This year the program sent me to M1PR form error, line 5 and it was requesting input. Long story short, this did not apply to me as a "renter" living with my girlfriend in our house that she is the sole owner on the mortgage (guessing the same or similar situation for many people). We share the expenses of the home so I guess Turbotax was seeing that as I would be requesting a rent rebate and something with the M1PR form? I had to get on the phone with turbotax and after 58 minutes, we figured out what needed to happen. The result included clicking the turbotax icon in the top left corner of the screen and searching for updates. There was an update (not sure why this update did not prompt me as there were 2 others that did while I was filling out my information). After an install, relaunch, and careful consideration NOT to check either box in the STATE section for the M1PR form, I was allowed to pass the evil tax gates and complete my return!
What's great about it: Complete and mostly easy to do on your own.
What's not so great: M1PR form and "check errors" gave me a headache

Marginally Satisfied

I filled my taxes and wound up with a schedule D revisit that was not removable even after I had put ALL applicable updates onto the program. There was some confusion about a 1099-Misc that generated a notification that could not be dismissed nor fixed. I ended up having to redo everything from scratch - a real pain. I moved Foreign Interest from the 1099-DIV and adding it to the "Other" deductions. This actually reduced my return rather than increasing it as stated. To correct this, I ended up deleting the entry from Schedule A, deleting the 1099-DIV, and reentering it.
What's great about it: Picked up previous year for guidance
What's not so great: Generated notifications which I could NOT remove

I was impressed with the speed and convenience of directly entering my Schwab data. Otherwise, it's a task I would rather not do.
What's great about it: I am used to you.
What's not so great: The usual, I have better things to do with my time and resources.
Pros: I moved
