I have used Turbo Tax for 5-6 years. To date I have never had a problem. I generally use the interview method. That seems to work for me.
What's great about it: I get my taxes done.
What's not so great: I have no idea what is going on behind the scene.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments

Missing two Vermont forms
on March 22, 2014
Posted by: Bbosher
from Barre, VT
For property owners Vermont requires two forms to be completed:
HI-144 Household Income
HS-122 Homestead Declaration AND Property Tax Adjustment Claim
What's not so great: For business, not clear distinction between inventory & materials ready for assembly
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Thorough, Reliable, and As Easy As Possible

I have been using TurboTax for many years (15 or so) and I wouldn't do my taxes without it! It is a reliable program that is as easy to understand as is possible with our incredibly complex tax code! They update the program regularly to account for any last minute tax changes or for any problems that have been discovered in the program.
I especially like the Tax Audit service (for a small extra charge) that brings with it a professional tax organization to help defend you if you are audited or otherwise questioned by the IRS about your tax filing. I have had the opportunity to use it when the IRS decided that I had withdrawn an IRA without paying tax and penalties. I had actually rolled over the account, but had neglected to file the proper form to indicate the roll-over.
What's great about it: Complete and thorough program, EasyStep Q & A method, Reliable, Backed up with Available Tax Audit Service
What's not so great: None

Helps immensely

Managing two self-employment businesses is tricky, when some things such as internet, cell phone, etc. are shared between the businesses, while only a percentage is business related. Turbotax imports the previous year's information, which is enormously helpful, but I would also like to see on the same screen the breakout or detail of the deduction categories (e.g., Communication deductions vs. office or supplies deductions, etc.# from the prior year. Sometimes it's difficult how to classify those items, so over the years the entries may float to different categories. Maybe that's a wish list item for a future edition of TT Home and Business.
This year, there was confusion about the 1099 B form for me, when I thought that's what I should get but instead received a 1099 R. That's not the fault of the program, but dealing with it was frustrating.
I like that I can work on taxes just a few hours, then return and pick up again where I left off. I like that the program calculates the better choices of savings #standard deduction vs. itemized deduction.).
I am confused still by the questions asking about income from another state. While my wife works in Maryland and lives in Pennsylvania, all the taxes are paid to Pennsylvania. However, the program seems to keep prompting me with the question: Did you earn income in another state? When I answer yes, it prompts me to fill in how much tax was paid to Maryland. It is a reciprical state, so no Maryland tax is due. Yet, the form seems to persist like a ghost in the machine.
I like TurboTax and have used it for more than 10 years. With late changes in the tax codes, I waited longer than usual this year to file. Perhaps the program could be up front and indicate which areas are still unsettled regarding the code in situations like this? If we know that an area's calculations may change, we can simply work on another section..
Keep improving. Thanks for the help sections and TurboTax Community offerings. They are extremely useful and the first place to turn for answers.
What's great about it: handling W-2 as well as two self-employment businesses
What's not so great: Uncertainty about duplication of entries

Complex Returns Managed Easily

Even with 30+ years of experience as a corporate tax lawyer, the intricacies of individual income tax returns are not worth the extra research that I would need to do once each year. I don't have the time, much less any career reason to try to match what TurboTax embodies and accesses. Leaving it to the experts and the community is the only rational way to get it done without reinventing many wheels and most likely going astray inadvertently. It may not be perfect, but it is powerful and provides enough peace of mind to merit the trust that I place in TurboTax year after year after year. Picking up a carryforward from last year reduced my tax liability by more than 75%, and on my own I probably would have missed it and paid Uncle Sam a lot more than my legal tax obligation. The cost-benefit ratio is staggering, to say the least.
What's great about it: The Only Comprehensible Way To Get It Done Safely
What's not so great: Separate Charge for State E-File
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I moved
