I really enjoy doing my taxes with this program. It is so self explaining and I understand my taxes as I go along. It makes it so easy to do my taxes and see all that i can deduct . I am so glad it checks for errors and to see if i missed anything. Thanks again for a great program I have used for so many years! Brenda
What's great about it: Easy to use
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)
I usually buy the Turbo Tax Premier. This year, I had to buy the Home and Business. My son and a friend have started a LLC and my son already has a rental property business. I am a former tax professional, and since I have left the industry I have been using the Turbo Tax program. I have not had a lot of issues with the program until this year. The Home and Business is definitely set up differently than the Premier program and I found it a little hard to navigate through it. There were times that I wanted to go directly to a specific spot to put information in and I had to basically enter through the entire section to get to the specific question in order to answer it. However, after going through it multiple times to get all of my son's rental information in to the return, it was definitely much easier to do my husband's and my return.
I would also like to see a navigational pane of some sort come up every time you open a return to show you where you are in the return, so you can kind of go directly to a specific question a little easier to fill in answers. It would also be helpful to have Help links that would take you directly to pub. 17 for pertinent information e.g. standard meal rates for business and for OTR truck drivers.I had to go to the IRS website and look for that information in the Pub. 17. Better explanations for how to do estimated tax payments on both federal and state tax returns would be very helpful. One other thing I had an issue with this year was putting in our refinance information and our son's refinance of rental properties and purchase of his new primary home. Those areas were not clearly defined, or else I couldn't seem to answer the questions correctly, to bring up the areas to put in the information. I played with the program and finally found them, but it was a little frustrating.
Over all I do like this program better than any other program that I have used on my own. I will continue to use this program for tax purposes for personal use and for my son's businesses as it seems to be the most comprehensive program out there.
I will say, I have also used your federal free version for my nieces, nephews, and sister and they have all been totally happy with their returns.
Please keep up the good work. Thanks.
What's great about it: It had everything I needed to do personal and business taxes.
What's not so great: It seemed very different from what I have previously used.
walking through the wizard is helpful and takes you step by step through all of your tax documents. the import feature from banking institutions is also nice. the error check is frustrating - it will refer to different forms or worksheets that have errors, but does not give you a link to jump to the error. if you've been using the wizard you really don't know what the forms and worksheets are. they need a link that will jump to the error you need to fix, with the error highlighted. there is also a bug at the end when trying to e-file. if there are updates it asks you to update, but does not tell you that you need to restart the system in order for the updates to be applied. many people probably end up mailing their returns not knowing they should also restart and not just run the "check for updates" option.
What's great about it: step by step walk thru
What's not so great: the error check
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments
after review the problems fix does not take you to the problem so you can see it... it gives you a blank to fill in without your knowing what it's all about.
For the umpteenth year I once again chose Turbo Tax over all other options. It is fast and easy. I do like the help and now the option of asking for help, rather than the music and videos of the past.
What's great about it: Transferred details from last year's filing
What's not so great: Did not fully complete state return automatically-had to do this manually
Have used Turbo Tax for over twenty years would like to be able to split screen and see from simultaneously while using step by step. Also drill down using forms could be made easier especial when trying to understand whats reflected in the estimated work sheet.
What's great about it: Step by step
What's not so great: Going between step by step and froms
TurboTax is still largely reliable and convenient. The "improvements" with the pictures of tax professionals saying things like "let's see what kind of refunds we can get you" when you are just about to enter personal income information are corny, confusing, annoying, distracting, cumbersome, and often misleading. They should make it easier just to enter data on your own in a table ,and also to go directly to the tax form if necessary.
What's great about it: Checks return and gives good information
What's not so great: Interface and data entry are often awkward.
