Extra fees are way too high.

I have used turbotax home and business for several years now and I find that the extra fee for a second state and for e filing the states are very expensive.
What's great about it: Software is thorough and makes filing easier.
What's not so great: The fees for the extra state and for efiling states are way too high

I thought this year's Home & Business tax guide was more complicated than previous years and certainly less generous.
What's great about it: Guidance
What's not so great: Must know basics

Our taxes are complicated--a family farm,a family trust, royalties, my wife's small business, etc. TurboTax allows me to to do it all my self with real confidence and pay a fraction of what I would pay my CPA or attorney.
What's great about it: Step by step directions and questions with ability to shift to forms for review
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Repose and sale of mobile home.

I could not find a place for handling the acquisition and then the sale of a mobile home. My wife and I had loaned money to a couple to purchase the home. At the end of 2012, they informed us they were leaving the country and turned the home over to us. My wife and I fixed up the home and sole it for a substantial loss. I chose to use the forms I am familiar with, that is the Schedule E set of forms. I am not sure these are the correct forms. However, I do believe the final results would be the same regardless of the forms used.

IT'S JUST O.K.

Entries are simple but editing them seems time consuming. Editing charity name entries don't exist needed to delete and reenter. Program doesn't check for possible double entries. Found them during manual review. Had printing problems for final forms, program froze had to reboot. Picked print only filing doc's. The program printed e v e r y t h I n g. This never happened in years past.
What's great about it: SEEMED TO WORK, NOT AS SIMPLE AS YEARS BACK.
What's not so great: COST OF ADDITIONAL STATE TAX FORMS

Some Buggy Forms Destroy User Experience
on March 26, 2014

The Colorado Innovative Motor Vehicle Credit form was buggy. This prevented me from filing online for a couple of weeks as they worked out the bug. After that was supposedly fixed and an update went out, there was no change. Same bug. The bug was that no matter what numbers you entered in 2 fields, the form would never continue. Just bring you back to the same page with no error, over and over and over. Because this credit is $6000, skipping it was not an option. The tech support said the update went out to the downloadable version, so I downloaded that instead of online. Importing from online to the download copy is easy enough, no problem there. I get to the same spot and again it won't let me pass. After waiting almost a month and not able to file I figure out that if I use the downloaded version and manually enter that form, I can get past it. The problem seems to be that they never ask what the MSRP or even delta price of the vehicle is at any point. This means they cannot complete the form because box #1 is missing information. After filling that in manually, I notice it is using the OLD calculation which is legal since it applies to 2010 through 2013 but not the version that is 2013 and onwards. Using the old method I only get $4500 back. Using the new method which IS ON THE FORM IN THE PROGRAM, JUST NEVER FILLED OUT I get the full $6000 as I should. Pretty silly bug, but it prevented me from completing my state return and major delays in filing. Also forced me to download the software at a major price increase to the online version.
Another complaint is that once you accidentally select the "upgrade" options online from one program model to another, there is no easy way to downgrade. I ended up with the highest end package when I only needed the 2nd highest package. This is the sort of malicious coding that makes people hate software.
The only reason I used TurboTax this year instead of HR Block is because the federal vehicle credits don't even exist in the HR Block software. Next year, unless I buy another qualifying vehicle, I will be switching back to HR Block.
What's great about it: Easier than doing it by hand
What's not so great: Bugs in Form system with no easy way to receive help makes product useless at the worst times
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Consistently Excellent

Completed taxes with the confidence that the final numbers were as accurate as could be possible. Turbo tax gives the
taxpayer the ability to complete their taxes with the confidence
that their return is consistently as accurate as any high priced preparer, with much less hassle! Once I had switched to Turbo Tax I will never consider any other method!
What's great about it: Accuracy is important
What's not so great: Government's never ending tax changes
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)
