Seemed simple enough to use, but there were a couple items that required that I seek help from the community. Things that should have been explained better. One was a description for one of the state tax whd/pmt boxes - all the other fields were described except one, and an input was required. the other problem was that my distribution from a 529 plan included some items paid in prior year causing Turbo Tax to show the difference as income. I had to manually change this.
Also, I thought I recalled that the program was going to recommend changes for next year yet I can't find this now.
Every year I shudder at the idea of doing taxes, and every year I'm surprised at how well put together and useful Turbo Tax is. We have four (!) businesses in my family that I have to deal with, four home office write offs, etc. I had NO clue how to even start to approach this, but Turbo Tax calmly and simply took me along, step by step, anticipating all my questions and offering answers before I had even been able to articulate what was confusing me. Truly masterful. I have only one complaint but, for me, it's pretty important: There is no mac version of their excellent Turbo Tax business program. We have to use that to do one of our businesses (S corporation) so ever year I need to sneak into my son's room while he's at school and use his gaming computer. This is not such a terrible thing except that it limits my ability to have Turbo Tax import all of our quickbooks and other information. It's absurd that they still don't support Mac. That aside, I love the program.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)
I have been a long time user of Turbo Tax. It has always performed flawlessly until this year. It dropped down loaded data consistently and had to enter by hand to correct.
On a couple of occasions it would not let be update data unless I viewed the form directly.
Have used Turbotax for 5 years and never had trouble before. Couldn't get it to file electronically even though I had installed the latest updates I was said to lack. Did some poking around and found I had to delete the Trash on my Mac, then restart it. That did work, but it was more trouble than I've ever had with Turbotax. Will think long and hard next year as to whether to purchase it or look at alternatives.
I really LOVE, LOVE, LOVE TurboTax. I used other software once and quickly came back to TurboTax the next year. The software makes it easy to follow all the steps and guidelines, especially with complicated taxes like a small business and rental property. I always feel I am getting the maximum deductions and credits allowed, and appreciate the ease of e-filing. The only con - I sold a business vehicle this year and had an error show up in the filing. The "help" was a little complex in language, so I wasn't quite sure what to do until I asked a real person. It was easy to fix once I figured it out, but it would have been less frustrating to have clearer instructions on what was wrong. Small problem, though. I'll definitely use TurboTax again next year!
