I sometimes have difficulty locating an item. I can't find the Payer or Agent ID Number for a foreign pension fund which had failed to print the ID on an NR4 form.
What's great about it: Good all around, quite thorough
What's not so great: Can't locate the Tax ID numbers from 1099 or NR4 type docs
I found it still very challenging to complete my K-1 information, especially the "other income" and "other expense" and foreign transaction information. Some, I seem to have to manually enter.
I am an accountant and found that I would have neglected to include one of the 2013 changes your software included. The speed at which I can complete is incredible, and I'm a registered agent
What's great about it: Enjoy quickly accessing forms from Dialog Menu
I thought navigation was cumbersome. Would appreciate more ease in going back and forth from one topic to another. When filing by mail, it printed many unnecessary pages. Kept asking for my insurance company's number from form HC for MA state return, although I am on medicare. Easy Step for Schedule E doesn't allow you to enter an expense that is 100% attributable to the rental unit when using the automatic calculation which automatically fills in amount based upon the percentage of use of an owner-occuped building. For example if I enter $10,000.00 for my property taxes it will automatically enter $5,000.00 for the apartment which is 50% of the building. But, there is no way to enter $500.00 for an expense which is solely attributable to the apartment.
What's great about it: Keeping info from previous year is helpful.
What's not so great: Navigating is cumbersome, especially the state return. Prints unnecessary pages for mailing.
Would be a good add on to mark the separate input segments as complete or not. Sometimes I know I have the final numbers and sometimes I know I have to do some research to assure the numbers are complete and accurate. Once I've done my homework I'd like to know I don't have to revisit again and that that I actually finished my homework.
Another benefit would be ability to estimate following year's income, deductions etc as a result of life, business, income source and expense changes and the tax impact as it is known at the time of the estimate.
a final recommendation is a retirement income report and details for those of us baby boomers who will be withdrawing 401K, IRA, Roth etc. with pre tax and post tax accounts, along with social security income etc..
What's great about it: Direct, to the point
What's not so great: Sometimes room to double deduct between personal and business expenses
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments
Using Turbo Tax Home and Business I find a great peace of mind that I've found all the deductions that are best for us. We have rental property, I'm a pastor, I'm also a teacher and we have a shared home office. I was able to use the PDF file I had saved on an external hard drive to put information back into the downloaded "new" Turbo Tax program after my computer crashed. Whew! I'm glad I saved that file! I wish I were able to enter the information from 2012 into the file so that comparisons were available. We had several carry over amounts that I needed. However, the program did allow us to enter the amounts as needed. I'm hoping that I was able to "catch" all of them. I've been using Turbo Tax since 1990 and still think it's the best out there!
What's great about it: I was able to use saved PDF file to enter amounts
What's not so great: Not being able to enter info from last year with previous carry over amounts.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)
