I have used TurboTax for years. It is extremely easy to use and guaranteed to be accurate. I like the step-by-step just in case there might be an item that I overlooked. Would highly recommend to anyone.

thorough and professional

Overall experience was positive and felt many forms and documents were covered that I normally would have left out. The records and comparisons from 2012 were also helpful to check for areas of improvement.
My business expertise is still a work in progress but some of the advise and hints were very helpful. I'm still working on more detailed business specifics and am therefore glad for the audit protection offer.
What's great about it: enjoyed the upload from 2012 turbotax records
What's not so great: home business section questions
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Tax Generation
on March 31, 2014

The standard sales tax deduction did not automatically come up. It was not until I compared my return to last years return that I found that the software forgot to ask about it.
Also, my tax preparer reviewed my return and said there should not have been a $2 penalty that the software generated on the Federal return.
Also, having an error requiered me to go through many screens to refile. I already clicked no, but it made me answer the same questions again. The same was true on our limited use vehicle. I should not have had to add mileage a second and third time simply to change a few miles.
Over all it took 10-12 hours to fill out our returns with the software which was easier than doing it by hand.
What's great about it: The federal return was well layed out and easy to follow the step by step process.
What's not so great: The "Iowa" State edition did not walk through the process well.

Usually a great product - updater was bad

I usually love TurboTax. Due to errors in the Updater, it took an additional 2 hours to complete my returns.
The help center call was great in fixing the problem.
I hope TurboTax isn't like this next year.
What's great about it: Easy to use
What's not so great: Updater feature was a mess!
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Why did I have to pay so much more than last year
on March 31, 2014
Posted by: 4981
Although my income was over $1000 less than last year, my tax payment was over 2 1/2 times what I paid last year, and that was with credits that I didn't get last year. There is no one to talk with to ask why, and the trite answers on the "help" site did nothing to explain this.

State Software Not Always Good
on March 31, 2014
Posted by: Doodle15
from Colorado, w/non-res returns for sev more states
Mississippi is a disaster for non-resident royalty income. Forms are generated that contain no data and no source of income. Forms are generated showing income not attributable to Mississippi. Therefore, must go to forms to override to prevent over-taxation. Not all data from 1099s (e.g. address of 1099 issuer) is automatically transferred over to the Mississippi forms and thus have to be re-typed. Some forms are generated from pre-2013 data (such as W-2s not even issued in 2013). The income is blank, but it is a nuisance and there is no way to deletes these useless forms, which might serve to confuse the MS Dept of Revenue.
Oklahoma has an additional depletion allowance (22% vs. 15% for the feds). When doing step-by-step it is not clear if you are being asked to fill in the difference or fill in the higher amount. You have to go to the forms to make sure.
Federal Schedule K-1. Royalty depletion that is shown as a note in the K-1 is not covered in step by step. You have to go to the forms and override to make sure you get the depletion.
What's great about it: Turbotax does a good job on most things, especially the federal returnn
What's not so great: Some of the State are poorly covered
