Why did I have to pay so much more than last year
on March 31, 2014
Posted by: 4981
Although my income was over $1000 less than last year, my tax payment was over 2 1/2 times what I paid last year, and that was with credits that I didn't get last year. There is no one to talk with to ask why, and the trite answers on the "help" site did nothing to explain this.

State Software Not Always Good
on March 31, 2014
Posted by: Doodle15
from Colorado, w/non-res returns for sev more states
Mississippi is a disaster for non-resident royalty income. Forms are generated that contain no data and no source of income. Forms are generated showing income not attributable to Mississippi. Therefore, must go to forms to override to prevent over-taxation. Not all data from 1099s (e.g. address of 1099 issuer) is automatically transferred over to the Mississippi forms and thus have to be re-typed. Some forms are generated from pre-2013 data (such as W-2s not even issued in 2013). The income is blank, but it is a nuisance and there is no way to deletes these useless forms, which might serve to confuse the MS Dept of Revenue.
Oklahoma has an additional depletion allowance (22% vs. 15% for the feds). When doing step-by-step it is not clear if you are being asked to fill in the difference or fill in the higher amount. You have to go to the forms to make sure.
Federal Schedule K-1. Royalty depletion that is shown as a note in the K-1 is not covered in step by step. You have to go to the forms and override to make sure you get the depletion.
What's great about it: Turbotax does a good job on most things, especially the federal returnn
What's not so great: Some of the State are poorly covered

Thank you so much TurboTax. I felt as though I had a tax expert sitting right beside me the entire time. Community help, customer support, and an internet full of TurboTax supported articles made it easy to answer any questions that arose.
Thank you once again for providing such a wonderful product.
What's great about it: Everything! TurboTax walked me through each step and made doing my combined business and personal taxes a breeze!
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Maybe some day

As a long time user, I feel pretty comfortable with the system. For years, my biggest complaints have been that there is too much wasted space on many of the windows. It would be nice if I wasn't always scrolling down to find the "Continue" button. Also, dividend sales forms seem to bewilder the system. Mine never seem to match up with the information TT is asking for, and some must be completed manually. Maybe some day, Turbo Tax will figure out how to automate all.
I'm not sure why buying a second state return should be so expensive. Fortunately, it is a one-time need for me, so I will obtain and file the forms manually and not worry about it next year, but it sure would be nice if there was a simple return bargain rate available.
What's great about it: Looks to be thorough and pretty simple to follow
What's not so great: No bargains on second State returns!
Pros: I moved

Have used this product at least 12-15 years. Love it. However this year noticed a few glitches in it that have not seen before. One in particular there was not a prompt ot ask if I wanted to use part of my 2013 refund as credit toward 2014 tax.
What's great about it: easy to work through
What's not so great: Had to go into forms several times to see where I needed to input info

My power went out EXACTLY as I was e-filing my fed taxes. I kept my fingers crossed, and TurboTax delivered by recovering the tax documents (almost) to the point I was at. Very little backtracking was required, and I am very thankful for that.
What's great about it: back-up during power-outage

I was even more pleased with the manner in which TurboTax guided me through the maze of lines of information and needed data. Taxes continue to get more complicated and TurboTax take away a lot of the apprehension
What's great about it: Even more intuitive than ever
What's not so great: would like a printed comparison with prior years taxes
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)
