TurboTax Home and Business

Other versions of TurboTax in previous years asked for administrator pin and did not require that I log out of personal section of desk top and re-log into administrator section. Since the file with my information was in my personal section of the computer, I had to copy and move my files to the administrator section to complete the updates and my tax filing. The pop-up window asking for administrator pin is the standard for all programs on Windows 7. I do not understand why TurboTax Home and Business does not conform to the standard.
What's great about it: Easy to Use. covers all the bases. Same quality of review as other versions of TurboTax
What's not so great: Home and Business search for updates required that I log-in as adminstrator to update.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Helpful tool, but updates were a hassle

Walking through all of the steps, with thorough explanation of what each step means and what qualifies for that specific field, is hugely valuable and makes TurboTax worth it year after year.
This year in particular, however, I was pretty frustrated with all of the updates. First of all, when I tried to file mid-march all of the forms were still not finalized and therefore I wasn't able to file. I signed up to receive an email when those forms were finalized, which never arrived, and only when I by chance logged back in and manually ran updates did I find that the forms were ready.
Then, when trying to efile, I was told there were updates I needed to install before I could file. I'd leave, install updates, come back to efile, and get the same message. This happened repetedly (within the same hour), and was a very frustrating user experience.
I ultimately had to quit the program and open it back up again before it would recognize I ran the updates and allow me to efile.
What's great about it: step-by-step guide to taxes
What's not so great: prohibitive updates

This is the last time I ever use Turbo tax. Very confusing with redundant areas for data entry. Also program won't allow me to print a hard copy. It's as if they are insisting I file by e.
What's great about it: way redundant questions and confusing
What's not so great: unable to print

One problem this year was that the file updates did not save after several attempts, and this prevented me from eFiling. It worked on the third attempt.
What's great about it: Copies prior years info. Shows year over year comparison
What's not so great: Charge to eFile state. Prompt for Audit Defense.

Prior years, it seemed easier to play around with potential IRA contributions to see impact on return. No big deal, I figured it out............but you asked.
What's great about it: Concise, easy, thorough
What's not so great: IRA contribution impact...cumbersome

2013 Fed & St Tax Return

I have used TurboTax for several years but this 2013 tax year version is by far the absolutely most poorly developed program. It has taken me 15 extra hours to figure out that TT inappropriately carried forward a 179 deduction that was fully taken in 2012, and then to go back through the entry process to correct the default entries.
Several of the instructions were gibberish, not understandable by a lay person completing the tax form. It is possible a CPA could follow the detailed and cumbersome instructions and maybe a person who is expert at filing other people's returns could also. But this average joe blo who just wants to get to the bottom line and file our joint return was frequently at a loss to figure out what TT expected me to enter and do.
Enough said.
What's great about it: Easy to e-file Fed
What's not so great: Absence of clear, understandable explanations

More Problems Than Usual

I could not get Mutual Fund information to transfer from Quicken into Turbo Tax. In previous years, this information has transferred and the program calculated the cost of stocks sold. I had to do all of this manually. I had other transfer problems but they were easier to handle manually.
The Income tax line items between Quicken and Turbo Tax should be expanded so td\hat these transfers are easier to make
What's great about it: Calculations are good. I prefer Turbo Tax and will continue to use it.
What's not so great: Had more trouble than usual transferring information form Quicken Home and Business 2013 to Turbo Tax Home and Business
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Every year TurboTax has gotten better. I appreciate being able to save a return in process, exit and return to the same spot next time. E-file with the IRS and multiple states is a great convenience. I appreciate being able to review a hard copy of my returns before e-filing and also saving as a PDF.
What's great about it: Step by step interviews are clear, comprehensive and easy to follow
