Step Procedures & Only previous year Import
on April 1, 2014

1. During high unemployment years you may not have an income and therefor not file a tax return. TurboTax does not allow import of other than previous year tax return. This now requires all data to be entered and the lack of 5 year tax history continuity.
2. It is not clearly described as to where per diem deduction should be entered for an employee.
3. The step by step procedures are great and the choice to select each topic on your own.
4. Thank-you!
What's great about it: Good step by step procedures
What's not so great: Unable to import earlier tax years. Only allows previous tax year import.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Simplifies a Painful Process
on April 1, 2014

TurboTax leads you through the painful process of preparing your tax returns. Whether you use an accountant or not, you need to collect all the necessary information; TurboTax does a great job of leading you through that process.
And TurboTax can download information from lots of financial institutions, then automatically use that info to (for example) handle stock transactions. For me, this capability was a godsend. I would have had pages upon pages of transactions to enter, but TurboTax (together with Fidelity) handled it all with a couple clicks. Thank you TurboTax!
What's great about it: Leads you through the process of collecting all necessary info; imports LOTS of data from your financial institutions
What's not so great: Default choice prints out more than you'll ever need (worksheets, etc.)
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Good but not great

I have been a loyal TT user for more than a decade. It has always served me well, and I will continue to use it. Over the years my taxes have become more complicated as our income sources have diversified. TT has been a full service product and is able to handle all of my tax needs.
In several cases the questions in the 2013 package seem less clear to me, than in previous years. Some of this could be due to the increasing complexity in my tax needs, but I suspect some of this also is due to clearly thinking through the questions. I hope subsequent editions will improve the questions.
I also am a Quicken user (since 1998). I have never done a direct transfer of data/information from Quicken to TT. Early on I tried this, but there were too many miscategorizations. Mudh of this is likely due to how I categorized the data during initial input, but at that time my categorizations were based on other needs (e.g., spending and budgeting). It would be great if Intuit provided a user interface between Quicken and TT that allowed the user to adjust categorization and other data details for tax purposes.
What's great about it: Transfer of information from previous return. Fully provides for all my income tax needs
What's not so great: Questions are not always clear. Directed to 'see help' in a couple of situations, but no link to help provided.

Relief and ease!

I have been using Turbo Tax since the second year of E-filing! I Love IT!!! It keeps getting easier and easier to answer the necessary questions that I need to make sure the forms are filled out correctly.
I only wish that there were a better way to address my particular issue for the business I am in. Ultimately, I found my answer online, but I was quite stressed until I got a conclusive answer.
I know that Turbo tax cannot address EVERYONE's special circumstances. But it sure is makes it easy for the most common ones!!
What's great about it: No math for me!
What's not so great: Unable to get the answer I needed for my business question.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

TurboTax 2013

Overall: very good value; the program could have a few more safeguards for users. For example: a message "last year you filled information re 1099Q. Do you need to do it this year?". It is very easy to miss it, it requires going back, looking for specific section etc. In case of non-qualified distribution from plan 529: it would be nice to re-assure a user that the appropriate calculations (tax +penalty) indeed took place. I had to seek the advice of a professional on that point (it turns out that Turbo Tax calculated everything properly, but a dilettante like me could not figure it out). Finally, KS part of the program has a bug. It forced me into eligibility for Homestead refund for primary residence despite the fact that I was ineligible. I had to supply fictitious info re income of another member of the household in order to become ineligible for that program.
What's great about it: structured interview
What's not so great: see below

Tools easy to use, easy to walk through each element. I appreciate the download from year before and comparisons..
What's great about it: Options on how to proceed, documents to send to feds with address at end, help line
What's not so great: If you have already ordered, information on accessing product vs online version
