TurboTax Process Review-2013 Tax Year
on April 2, 2014

The 2013 Home & Business TurboTax version was very good and covered all the many bases I had. One problem was: there was not a VERY CLEAR warning to do an intermediate save when I was 3/4 through the business portion (I was closing out an internet connection for checking something, and I closed out TurboTax instead, and had to start over. Very annoying). Otherwise the process was good, though it took me 2 1/2 days to get through everything. One especially helpful feature was leading me through every line of a complicated K-1 partnership filing. When I first got the statement from the partnership, I was confused about all the entries on the statement, but TurboTax took me through all the entries one at a time. No doubt saved me lots of errors. Also, very good that it brought in carryovers from the previous year.
What's great about it: Very clear lead through
What's not so great: Did not save first time through
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

With a small business my tax return is a lot of pages. I am able to carry over info from the previous years return that saves time.
What's great about it: Carries over info from previous year. On my own computer and not in the cloud.

Better than the Competition-but still needs work

TT for Mac has gotten better and easier to use every year since I started using it -- 2002 or earlier. Many more updates this year, right up to early April -- guess we could blame the IRS rule changes!
Only real Microsoft-like behavior was the inability to e-file due to "Need to update TT before filing" messages. No matter how many time I updated, it kept applying the same update and didn't set the 'flag' today it was updated. Finding the problem in the fora and then erasing my Trash did the trick. Too bad TT didn't fix this problem with another update!
What's great about it: Better interface than prior years; easier switching to forms and back!
What's not so great: Bugs in the update software that prevented me from e-filing
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Great product, keep it up.
What's great about it: Easy to understand, flowed nicely.
What's not so great: The look seems to change every year. It takes a little to get used to the new format.

This is what I'd like to see: tips on how to prepare NOW for next year's taxes.
1) What information should I be collecting? For example, I wish I'd known to keep records of business travel mileage.
2) I bought 3 cars this year and gave two of them away to family. Is that a thing? Is that relevant? If so, how?
3) I bought a piece of real estate in 2013 at a tax sale but have not taken possession of it yet. Is THAT a thing? Is that relevant?
Otherwise SPLENDID software. Thank you for making your software so understandable.
What's great about it: 4 hours WHILE watching a movie!
What's not so great: I'll get to that....
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I moved

Fairly easy to do but some items that were entered would show up in a different part of the return which made it a bit confusing
What's great about it: Concise
