I used one program that was free off the IRS website and could not understand many of the questions and sections…came out that I owed 1k more than I did! So went back to Turbotax which I enjoyed using last year, even tho had to purchase it.
I do think it's not completely honest/accurate to say file for free, then tack on fees to use check or cc and for even 1 state other than my own.
What's great about it: drop out boxes explaining items were very helpfully worded
What's not so great: unclear if I really have to file an Oregon state form when I only worked there 2 weekends.

Finally Done with taxes this year

The step by step instructions ensured that I covered all the items I needed to cover to get the maximum refund. Although it still took my quite a few hours to enter all my data and check it, it would have been much worse if I also had to read all the instructions for all the forms pertinent to my tax situation. I like the feature that allows me to find out what certain terms mean, or what conditions apply to me, especially when the answers come in a pop-up, rather than going off to an external web site. During the filing sequence, some instructions were provided via external web pages. I like the locally provided pop-up window better. I like the easy e-file capability. It is the first time I have used e-file for a federal tax return, and I got my confirmation in less than 30 minutes. All in all, I am pleased with TurboTax, with its completeness, with its focus on getting the data right and getting the maximum refund for you. Thanks!
What's great about it: easy to follow step by step guided instructions that included EVERYTHING I needed to provide to complete my taxes
What's not so great: Had a large amount of data to enter. Can't blame TurboTax for that.

Gets Better Every Year

Once you have gotten all the information together to pass along to an accountant so they can charge you (lots) to prepare your tax returns, you've already done all work to prepare your own -- and Turbo Tax makes that easy. It's amazingly satisfying to get it done!
What's great about it: Had a question, asked it -- and Turbo Tax answered me.
What's not so great: Well, after all, it is doing a tax return.

2013 Income Taxes

TurboTax again produced and excellent product that can be easily used by an experienced tax preparer. While I'm sure a novice preparer could use the TurboTax successfully, I feel and know from experience, that novice preparers have a great difficulty using TurboTax successfully.
While TurboTax is an excellent product, this year's product and prior year products have a maddening problem: the final review required just before electronically filing the forms. In my opinion flagging and requesting some corrections at the final review are poorly timed. As an example, I had not fully completed the recipient portion of some 1099 screens. Rightly TurboTax identified the flaw and brought it to my attention. Now identifying this omission is correct, however, bringing it to my attention just before filing was a poor choice. These type of omission errors could easily be identified much earlier in the preparation process when most prepares ask for error checks. Please don't ask for these low level omissions at this last point in the process when after arriving at this point in the process these type of should have been identified.
What's great about it: Prior year data was carried forward to current year including data comparisons.
What's not so great: The very final review of the tax returns is maddening.

Income Annualization to make it easier. It is a Difficult a job to to calculate & input the required information. It should programmed entering the quartly income and expense and the software to do the rest of required calculations.
What's great about it: Very well organized
What's not so great: You should do better job programming the uneven income through the year to eliminate under payment penalty.

Too many problems
on April 3, 2014

I don't remember all the specifics, but too many times things were made difficult that should have been easy. For example, sometimes when the same information needed to be entered in two different locations, the software should have been set up to do that automatically but that was not the case. Also, one time when I was asked to enter a date, I think it may have been the date that I signed the return electronically, it would not let me enter today's date "04/03/2014". That is even though it had examples of the earliest and latest allowable dates. Finally I got so frustrated that I just tried entering the first allowable date, which I believe was 01/01/2014, and it took that one. Go figure! Another issue: when TurboTax checks for errors, it is too often not entirely clear how to correct them. Adding a text box with instructions on how to correct the particular issue at hand would be very helpful. I never did figure out why it had an issue with my trying to donate to a charity that I believe was on my AL state return, so I finally just gave up and deleted it. Working on my returns this time made me feel that Intuit needs more real testers to tell them when the software frustrates them and to suggest remedies if possible. Another issue: It is very confusing trying to determine when to review and print. And the web based comments you get when you click on links purporting to be helpful were not helpful. For example, the link associated with a question about saving a copy of your return on you computer pulls up the same comments you get when asking about when to print your return. What's up with that?? And I have a consulting business "sole proprietor", so I get 1099 forms from my clients. This year the situation was very confusing, making it seem that they might be getting counted twice; in business income and again in the "personal" section. That evidently was not actually the case, but it was not clear initially. One last thing before I get some sleep tonight. When I was almost finished with the return, I wanted to go back and be sure that I had entered information on my long-term care insurance costs under my business expenses. It is a known category of expenses and is listed in TurboTax as such. However, when I tried to use the search box for the specific location in expenses, entering search terms such as "long term care" got me a couple of hits, but they never got me where I needed to go. I finally just looked around until I found it #I had already entered the information after all). Also, it could have been made easier to skip around to specific issues without having to go through too many steps already done at times. I even had problems trying to submit this review. It kept changing certain symbols and substituting others in their place on this form. For example, it kept changing parentheses into pound signs. Finally, after I had to keep reviewing and editing several times, it locked up and I had to start over. I have used TurboTax for many years, but sadly I think it has gotten harder to use this year instead of easier.
What's great about it: I got my federal and state tax returns competed and then filed electronically
What's not so great: Turbotax took me on too many blind alleys and repetitive steps at times.

I 1think the F1 key for help in the form is very useful to know what data is required in the particular box.
What's great about it: Transfer of previous years personal Information
What's not so great: At the end of the return you need to pay an additional 95.00 dollars to Efile the return and process the refund.
