Fast, efficient. Need guidance on how to keep my records so that this process is faster.
Clear and easy to follow directions.
What's great about it: updates
What's not so great: sometimes I don't know where to go to do a task.

I've used TurboTax since it consolidated the old MacInTax...same company...same great product. Every year taxes get more complicated and harder to do without using the services of a CPA. However, TurboTax continues to make a hard job easier. It typically takes me 1.5 to 2 full days to do my taxes. By the time I'm complete, I feel good about the results and sleep well knowing that even if audited, I am paying what I owe and no more. It would be great though, if TurboTax provided a note area for explaining the deductions taken so the next year, when you access previous year's tax info, those notes would be available to read and help you understand what you used to make up that odd deduction.
Additionally, when I do taxes, I always hold back some deductions in case I'm audited to give me a little buffer. It would be great if TurboTax gave you the opportunity to claim or hold that deduction.
I'd rather pay the Feds $100 than try to cheat them out of a dime, but in an audit, unless you are represented by Tax Support, you're at the mercy of the IRS agent reviewing your return.
What's great about it: Easy; thorough; available on my schedule
What's not so great: No place to put notes regarding deductions taken.

Ohio Form IT SBD

I have used Turbo Tax many years.I am not a tax accountant which is why I buy Turbo Tax! This year I felt as if I was thrown to the wolves with the Ohio form IT SBD. I don't understand the Ohio tax form or it's instructions enough to complete the form correctly. I finally mailed it to Ohio with a note attached - I'm sure it's filled out wrong. Why didn't Turbo Tax "go the extra mile" necessary to walk us through this form? I am very frustrated! I would appreciate a response.
What's great about it: Ease of Use
What's not so great: Ohio Form IT SBD - or lack of !

tax software performs the minumum

I've used turbo tax for years, and it NEVER imports correctly from Quicken, and it puts the entries in the wrong categories so it's very hard to tell where an entry taken from quicken ended up. It's very poor at any sort of analytics on where a certain expense would be best entered (I have a small business). I'm not interested in pretty videos. I want clear guidelines as to where to enter an expense, and concise explanations as to whether it is deductible (as well as lists of items that are deductible). Also, beware: not good or complete at calculating NH business enterprise taxes!
What's great about it: easier than getting all the forms and handwriting all the entries
What's not so great: mostly full of useless videos and poor at helping find the most deductions

This program was awesome. It was very easy to use, especially when filling out the 1099. Excellent resource for someone newly single AND opening a small business. This was my first time to file single in over 25 years and Turbo Tax relieved a lot of stress.
What's great about it: Answering the questionnaires and having the forms fill out automatically.
What's not so great: Finding specific information on claiming a dependent of divorced parents.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

More thorough than I expected

I needed the Business and Home version because I have an insurance and financial services company and am paid on multiple 1009s. In addition, I'm retired military, so my pension is also on a 1099, and I have VA disability payments. TurboTax seemed to go on and on and on asking all kinds of questions that I thought would never apply to me, but then, once I got really deep into the weeds, I started finding things that my professional preparer missed during the past two years of filing. If it wasn't for an out-of-state business trip I had to take, I'd have had the same preparer do my taxes again this year. Who knows what else she might have missed?! I made several phone calls to my regular preparer and asked why she hadn't taken certain deductions in the previous two years. She simply missed them, so now I'll be filing amended returns for 2011 and 2012!
This version of TT cost me less than what I had been paying my professional preparer and saved me considerably more. Although it's not as quick and easy as taking my taxes to someone else, it seems to prove the old adage that if you want it done right, do it yourself. With TT, it took longer, but I was ultimately responsible and made sure I used all the tools available to me to ensure I minimized the taxes I owed!
What's great about it: Very, Very Detailed
What's not so great: Sometimes it seemed too detailed; went on forever
