TurboTax Process Review-2013 Tax Year
on April 2, 2014
Posted by: jackbenimble100
The 2013 Home & Business TurboTax version was very good and covered all the many bases I had. One problem was: there was not a VERY CLEAR warning to do an intermediate save when I was 3/4 through the business portion (I was closing out an internet connection for checking something, and I closed out TurboTax instead, and had to start over. Very annoying). Otherwise the process was good, though it took me 2 1/2 days to get through everything. One especially helpful feature was leading me through every line of a complicated K-1 partnership filing. When I first got the statement from the partnership, I was confused about all the entries on the statement, but TurboTax took me through all the entries one at a time. No doubt saved me lots of errors. Also, very good that it brought in carryovers from the previous year.
What's great about it: Very clear lead through
What's not so great: Did not save first time through
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)
I have been using Turbo Tax since the 80's and have not had a problem that was major and they have been filed correctly. This year the only problem I am having is I can not get it to print my State fill as I will mail it myself.
What's great about it: Most all things where pretty good.
What's not so great: I am having trouble getting my State return printed.
Everything was going along fine, especially when it went to final review and I noticed I somehow skipped over a section with regard to business mileage and car expenses which ended up saving me $300. Then when I went to transmit, it took me four times to update changes before it transmitted. After the fourth attempt, I went into the online help, followed the instructions and emptied my trash. I updated again and it finally transmitted. I was getting very discouraged, especially since you pay (for the State returns) prior to transmitting. I was determined to make it work; however, it took over an hour to find this solution.
What's great about it: Less expensive than an accountant; do from home
1.) In earlier versions on Turbo Tax, I was able to import the previous years tax file and if I had 3 or 4 years worth of files it would import that in the current year's TurboTax and I could compare across 5 years of tax returns. Is this gone or I can't find it?
2.) I really wish you would change the review portion, so that of there is a 0.00 and it says "EDIT" to know whether there really is work done a layer behind or not. This is mostly when you select "I will choose what I want to review" If you can make these subsections clearer it would be great.
What's great about it: Always easy to use...
What's not so great: I wish it was more convenient to do multi-year comparisons
There were just a couple of areas where I had questions as I went, but inevitably these were not the areas where it offered guidance ("Learn more"). Sometimes I had to back up several screens to get an exact amount I had just entered. It would have been nice if it always remembered these amounts and put them into later fields as a starting point. Many times it did. It does seem to be slowly improving year after year.
What's great about it: Imports old info, keeps track of most previous entries where helpful
What's not so great: Still working on making the experience completely easy.
