state portions need work

State software essentially provides the forms and some calculations. You still need to figure out a lot of it, and the states can have some convoluted tax laws that are difficult to decipher, which is why I paid for software. It's getting better, but isn't the point to have the software do the work, and not me having to look up things at the state tax website???
What's great about it: Federal is 95% easy
What's not so great: State software doesn't do enough

2013 Turbo Tax

Everything went smoothly for me except the RMD and figuring out how to fill in data for form 8606. Lots of info from previous turbo tax years was automatically entered making process go more quickly.
Info on irs site helped clarify what was needed and the customer help site also helped.
What's great about it: easy & straight forward to use
What's not so great: difficult to figure out how RMD was accounted for. Had non taxable contributions to IRA over the years .

I like doing my own taxes but the books and forms can make a person tear out their hair. You save me the research and all those little test forms that used to make me crazy. Nice to know somebody else's hair is less, not mine.
What's great about it: I like that calculations are made for me since I tend to make dumb errors when I do them myself.
What's not so great: I liked most everything.

Filing was easy

I've been self-employed for 33 years. Also, I am trained as a tax preparer. Turbo tax makes it easy to file my return, my kids' returns and my neighbors' returns too.
What's great about it: Easy to use step by step format

Sure hate hitting updates at the end of the Federal Tax Return and never remember to update before I start tax return. Please Please put back at the beginning of system opening.
What's not so great: want forms & updates at beginning of return again not in the middle

Taxes Done!

I've been using TurboTax for years and have always appreciated how the program leads you through all the steps for filing. Each year my taxes have gotten more and more complicated as I added businesses and self employment. Anyway, I would recommend using turbo tax to get taxes done quickly and as painlessly as possible.
What's great about it: Can access individual forms, figures deductions for you, much better than TurboTax online version
What's not so great: It's taxes

Helped me this year through a business transition!

I have used TuboTax for almost a decade and have found the process very helpful. This year was especially challenging because of many new factors. Every step was understandable and quite easy. The interactive nature of the program kept asking questions and kept me from making errors by ignorance.
What's great about it: Very helpful in leading me into a new world of self employment
What's not so great: At end had trouble filing and had to get tech help after three days.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)
